Description
1855. BEDE, Cuthbert. Photographic Pleasures: Popularly Portrayed with Pen and Pencil. 52 pp. Illustrated with 23 etched plates. 8vo., 160 x 100 mm, bound in original illustrated cloth-backed boards. London: Day and Son, [1863]. Cuthbert Bede was the pen name of Edward Bradley. This is a reissue of the first humorous treatment of the new art and craft of photography to be published in England. To the readers of its day it offered an up-to-the-minute commentary on the fads and foibles, trials and tribulations of the photographic enthusiast. Piece missing from illustration on rear cover (a repeat of the front cover). Some internal staining, but still an exceptional copy of this fascinating book.

Description
Boston, 1933. Offprint. Numerous graphs in the text. Blue Cloth, authors and title in gilt on front board. Presentation copy from Blackfan and ownership signature of David D. Rutstein on the fly-leaf. Offprint of this groundbreaking article. This study was developed following the installation of a complete central air-conditioning system was installed in nurseries for premature infants whereby the temperature, humidity, and ventilation could be maintained at any desired level. From 1926-29 observations were made on three groups based on fetal age, weight and congenital anomolies. Data on perspiration, skin temperature, physiological response were maintained. Of particular interest is the difference in body weight and growth from the various groups of premature infants as well as the effects of humidity on chronic and acute infections. Blackfan (1883-1941), who headed the study, was an American pediatrician who focused on nutrition and hematology. Yaglou (1897–1960) was not a physician, but a professor of industrial hygiene at Harvard’s School of Public Health.  He joined the Research Laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers in 1921, where he spent five years studying the influence of humidity, temperature, and air circulation on working and resting adults. The authors were assisted in preparing this article by nurse Katherine MacKenzie Wyman. For a full abstract see https://www.cabdirect.org/cabdirect/abstract/19342700349.

Description
Philadelphia: By the author, 1793. Third edition. Top wrapper (original) only, though detached; some spotting. Uncut, some unopened. Signature of Robert Bolling on title. Fourth edition of Carey's eyewitness account of the great yellow fever epidemic which enveloped the city of Philadelphia in 1793. "In this little book, which passed through four editions in a few months, Carey left a graphic description of the great yellow fever epidemic in 1793. He gave a good clinical description of the disease, mentioning the efficacy and failure of many forms of treatment" (G&M). Carey's intention was, in addition to setting forth the facts relating to the disease, to satisfy the "anxious curiousity" of the citizenry. Included in this enlarged edition are David Rittenhouses' meteorological observations for August through November 1793 and a 42-page listing of those who died from August to December 1793. This edition has several issues, this being that of 164 pages, with the comma following "subject" on title, and the contents on the final printed leaf verso. It was first published 14 November, 1793, then again the 23rd, the 30th and this edition the 16 January 1794.

Near Fine
Description
Leeds: Robinson & Son, 1813. Near Fine. A beautiful evocative print, which was plate 8 in the important color plate book, "The Costumes of Yorkshire". The title of the print, "Lowker", is a word of Yorkshire dialect meaning someone who weeds a cornfield, as the assembled group of six farm workers are apparently doing, with what looks like the overseer on horseback in the background. The print is dated 1813, while the book from which it was extracted was published in 1814, but we believe many of the plates in the book were issued in 1813. One wouldn't know that this print was from a book other than its lower edge, hidden from view, shows signs of having been so. 25 by 36.5 cm. Visible, 21 by 32 cm. With matting, 33 by 42 cm. The matting of the print is clearly professionally done and very handsome, with its decorative ruled lines. The matting has a few very faint stains that we ourselves could live with, thus making the print ready to be framed as is. If these marks should bother the owner, they could probably be removed with professional remediation, although one can certainly choose to re-mat before framing. The print proper has a few small light fox marks. We don't think these in any way compromise the print.

Two brochures, two-fold, then double-fold, 12 panels each; 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 and 8 x 3 3/4; illustrated with Art Deco drawings and 49 and 24 color paint chips laid on respectively; a bit of wear and age-toning along margins and folds; in very good condition. Beautiful advertising brochures, they showcased the colors of Rogers lacquers, including several stippled ones with brilliant marbled effects. The Detroit White Lead Works was founded in 1865 and manufactured paint by mixing white lead, oils, and colors. Some of their lacquers' claims to fame were that they "dried, while you wait" and could be used on wallpaper, linoleum, etc.
