Description
London [April 1836 - November 1837]: Chapman & Hall. First Edition. First edition in the original monthly parts, 20 parts in 19, with 43 illustrations by Seymour, Phiz and Buss. A near prime copy, lacking just 3 of the 11 points required in Eckel's bibliography, "The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens." The three points lacking are #2, 3 and 8; all 11 of Eckel's points are enumerated below. Part numbers, which are complete and in accord with Hatton & Cleaver are XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII and XIX/XX - Part XI lacks only 2 leaves of the Advertiser and part XII lacks only the Mechi catalogue. Additionally, let us name the parts and the ads they are lacking: Part I lacks only the Chapman & Hall ad; part II lacks only the author's Address; part III lacks the Chapman & Hall ad, The Toilet ad and the Address; part IV lacks only the Advertiser; part VII lacks the Advertiser and Phrenology ad; part VIII lacks the Advertiser and Geo. Henekey ad; part IX lacks the Advertiser and The Parterre ad and Geo. Henekey ad; part X lacks one leaf of the Advertiser and both rear ads; part XI lacks two leaves of the Advertiser; part XII lacks only the Mechi ad; part XIII lacks the Pigot's Colored Views ad, Ward's Miscellany ad and the Argyll Rooms ad; the remaining parts XIV through XIX/XX are COMPLETE and in accord with Hatton & Cleaver. THE WRAPPERS; all front wrappers are dated MDCCCXXXVI (1836). Wrappers of part I, early (meaning not 1st or 2nd issue); part II, early; part III, early, part IV, early, with inside of wraps blank; part V, front wrap is 1st issue, rear wrap is 2nd issue with inside blank (see Hatton & Cleaver pp. 25-28; part VI, front wrap is 2nd issue, rear wrap is early (1838); part VII, front wrap is 2nd issue, rear wrap is 2nd issue (Oct. 1836, same month as 1st issue); part VIII, Front wrap is 1st issue, rear wrap is 2nd issue; part IX, early; part X, correct; part XI, correct; part XII, early; part XIII, correct; XIV, correct; part XV, correct; part XVI, correct; part XVII, correct; part XVIII, correct; part XIX/XX, correct. THE PLATES; all plates are before letters, i.e., without captions. As called for in Hatton and Cleaver, plates in parts I through XI have page numbers; plates in parts XII through XIX/XX have no page numbers. Relative to the plates in part XII, Hatton & Cleaver agree with Miller & Strange [see Miller & Strange "A Centenary Bibliography of the Pickwick Papers, page 45], "Both plates [in part XII] appear unpaged as well as paged, the former prior to the latter." Therefore, the plates in part XII are first plate, second state. Notably, this exceptional set has the first issue of the vignette title with "Tony Veller" on sign as well as the suppressed Buss plates in part III. The plates in part I are as follows: (1) first state of the second Seymour plate; (2) second state of the second Seymour plate; (3) first state of the second Seymour plate; (4) first state of the second Seymour plate. The plates in part II: (5) first plate, first state; (6) first plate, first state; (7) first plate, first state. The plates in part IV: (10) second state of first plate; (11) second state of first plate. The plates in part V are first state, part VI are second state, part VII are first state, part VIII are first state, part IX are first state, part X are first plate, part XI are first plate, part XII are first plate, second state, part XIII are first plate, part XIV are first plate, part XV, plate 32 is first plate, and plate 33 is second plate; part XVI is first plates; part XVII, plate 36 is first plate, plate 37 is second plate; part XVIII has first plates and in part XIX/XX, all are first plates. In part X, the obverse of plate 23 is ANNOTATED by Thomas Hatton thus: "only state of this plate: another plate exists." Plates are very good to fine, with the exception of those in part IX, which are browned at edges, not affecting illustrations. THE TEXT is first issue in parts VII, XIII, and XIV; the text is mixed in parts VI and VIII; parts XV through XIX/XX have no textual points of priority. Previous owner names appear on front wraps of parts VI, XII, XVIII and XIX/XX. Now we will list the 11 points required by Eckel for a prime Pickwick: #1. All front covers must bear the date 1836. #2. Parts I and II front wrappers must carry the words "With four illustrations by Seymour. #3. Part III front wrapper must carry the words "With Illustrations by R. W. Buss." #4. Part I must have four plates by Seymour, signed and not re-etched by Phiz. #5. Part II must have 3 plates by Seymour signed. #6. Part III must have the two plates signed "Drawn and etched by R. W. Buss" and the page numbers. #7. Part IV has the two plates indistinctly signed "Nemo" and not "Phiz." #8. Parts II, III and XV must have the Addresses by the Author. #9. Parts XVII, XVIII and XIX/XX must have the Addresses by the publishers. #10. Parts I to XII must have no captions, only page numbers where they are inserted; parts XIII to XIX/XX must have neither captions nor page numbers. #11. On the vignette title page the name "Weller" on the signboard above the door must appear with a "V" and the signature "Phiz fecit" must surround the tablet at the bottom of the frontispiece. The present Pickwick is lacking only numbers 2, 3 and 8 above. Light soiling on some wrappers; small corner repair to rear wrap of part X. Internally clean and bright. Housed in a custom green quarter leather slipcase, with chemise. Armorial bookplate is affixed to the chemise. This exceptional set comes with a pedigree - it is from the legendary Hatton & Cleaver collection. Provenance: The Hatton & Cleaver collection, The Heritage Bookshop, Charles Parkhurst Rare Books, Inc. Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 1-88.

Description
Rome: Francesco Corbelletti, 1631. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in early 20th c. stiff parchment, ruled in red, with elegant pen-work in red and black on the spine. A nice copy, perhaps lightly washed. With woodcut arms of the dedicatee, Pope Urban VIII, with the Barberini arms, on p. 3. FIRST EDITION of this important account of Vietnam, the first report on Vietnam written by a European. Written from the author's own experiences during his residence in the Nguyễn domains, in what is now central and southern Vietnam, between 1618 and 1621, the work presents the author's direct observations of the land's geography, climate, and natural resources; its political administration, commerce, and social customs (including descriptions of indigenous religions); as well as a narrative of the progress of the nascent Jesuit mission. The Italian Jesuit scientist (a heliocentrist and supporter of Galileo), arrived in Cochinchina in late 1617 or early 1618, when the missionary presence was still in its infancy and marked by uncertainty. Expecting hostility or even martyrdom, Borri instead found a courteous reception and went on to spend four productive years in the country. During that time, he strengthened the mission, established lasting relations with local communities, and conducted scientific research. In Chapter 5 he records his predictions and observations of two lunar eclipses and the solar eclipse of 22 May 1621. Although Borri's Relatione contains no sustained Vietnamese text, it is among the earliest European works to record Vietnamese (Cochinchinese) words phonetically in the Latin alphabet-chiefly titles such as Onsaij (ông sãi, "monk"), Omgne (ông nghè, "court official"), and place names like Faifò (Hội An) and Turon *(Đà Nẵng). These spellings document early European attempts to capture Vietnamese sounds before the creation of the systematic Romanized script quốc ngữ by later Jesuits such as Alexandre de Rhodes. The book is structured in two parts, the first dealing with the geography and culture of Vietnam. BOOK I - The Temporal State of Cochinchina Borri introduces Cocincina (Cochinchina), the area corresponding roughly to central and southern Vietnam, ruled by the Nguyễn lords. He explains the etymology of the name (from "Coci," a Japanese term for Annam, and "China"), and locates the country between Tunchim (Tonkin, northern Vietnam) and Chiampà (Champa, south-central Vietnam). He praises its fertility, mild climate, and dense population, portraying it as a prosperous and well-governed realm suited for missionary enterprise. He describes a region of temperate weather divided between rainy and dry seasons. The atmosphere, he notes, is wholesome and pure, free from epidemic disease. He admires the regularity of the monsoon winds, which bring both agricultural abundance and maritime prosperity. In Chapter 3, Borri offers a lush catalogue of agricultural wealth-rice, sugar, fruits, and aromatic woods like aloes and calambac. Borri likens the fertility of Cocincina to that of Italy itself and emphasizes divine providence in the country's abundance. He observes that the people are skilled in irrigation and land management. In Chapter 4, "Of Elephants and the Abadas" (Rhinoceroses), Borri turns to fauna, describing elephants used in labor and war, and the abada (rhinoceros) found in the forests. He recounts local stories and adds European natural-philosophical reflections, presenting the animals as symbols of strength and divine order. An ethnographic portrait follows; Borri comments on the politeness and intelligence of the Cocincinesi (Vietnamese), their industry, and sense of honor. He also notes "superstitious" elements in religion and medicine, describing their use of herbal cures and astrological diagnosis. The men wear loose garments; women are modest and industrious. The society, he writes, prizes civility and filial duty. Chapter 6 - Of the Political and Civil Government The government is structured hierarchically: the Nguyễn lord rules from Sinvuà (Huế) through governors of provinces such as Quamguya (Quảng Ngãi), Cacciam (Qui Nhơn), and Pulucambì (Phú Yên). Laws are administered with Confucian-like decorum; justice is swift and often exemplary. The administration balances severity and generosity, maintaining peace and prosperity. Chapter 7 describes the Nguyễn ruler's military might and his conflicts with Tunchim (Tonkin). The king commands numerous elephants and disciplined troops, and Borri marvels at the discipline and courage of the soldiers. He describes the long rivalry between the Nguyễn and Trịnh dynasties as both political and moral warfare. Borri ends Book I with a vivid description of Faifò (Hội An) and Turon (Đà Nẵng), flourishing harbors open to Japanese, Portuguese, and Chinese traders. The openness of the ports makes Cocincina a meeting point of East and West, its commercial wealth feeding the royal treasury and preparing the ground for Christian missions. Book II is Borri's account of the Jesuit Mission and the progress -and setbacks- of bringing Christianity to Vietnam. Borri recounts the first entrance of Jesuit missionaries into Turon (Đà Nẵng) and Cacciam (Qui Nhơn). Welcomed by local officials, they erect two churches and begin preaching through interpreters. The early success, marked by curiosity and goodwill from the people, seems to promise a great harvest of conversions. Soon misfortune strikes. Drought and famine are blamed on the Jesuits, and persecution erupts. Borri himself is sent from Macao (Macau) to aid the mission, traveling in disguise. Miraculously, torrential rains begin at his arrival, which locals interpret as proof of divine favor, and hostility ceases. The Governor of Pulucambì (Phú Yên or Quy Nhơn) befriends the missionaries, grants them land, and builds a church and residence. His protection allows the Fathers to preach publicly and win respect at court. The chapter emphasizes how local authority could shelter fragile missions. Tragedy follows. The Governor dies suddenly of fever while hunting, before baptism. Borri mourns him as a noble pagan whose sympathy for Christianity nearly transformed the province. With his death, the missionaries lose all support and return to poverty and danger. After three years of hardship in Pulucambì, divine providence renews the mission. The wife of an ambassador from Nuoecman (Nước Mặn), moved by Borri's preaching, requests baptism, followed by twenty-five of her ladies. She receives the Christian name Orsola (Ursula). Later her husband, the Ambasciadore Ignatio (Ignatius), and many courtiers convert, marking the first flowering of Christianity among the elite. Borri narrates conversions among scholars and astrologers. One notable case involves a royal astrologer who mispredicted an eclipse that Borri accurately forecast using European astronomy. The accuracy of Jesuit science impresses the court, leading several literati to study Christian doctrine and some to convert. There are descriptions of priests and Onsaij (Buddhist Clergy) being converted to Christianity. A Buddhist monk named Onsaij Ly, for instance, becomes an exemplary Christian, living a pious life, preaching publicly, and converting others-including learned monks and nobles. Borri interprets this as proof that divine grace can penetrate the highest orders of gentile religion. Borri next surveys native religious systems, tracing them to Xaca (Śākyamuni Buddha) and noting similarities with pagan errors known to Europe. He divides the sects into philosophers, idolaters, and astrologers, arguing that their doctrines contain echoes of the Gospel distorted by ignorance. Borri describes healings, answered prayers, and deliverance from storms as proofs of divine favor confirming the truth of the new faith among simple folk. By the time Borri writes, Faifò (Hội An), Turon (Đà Nẵng), and Cacciam (Qui Nhơn) all possess flourishing Christian congregations with churches, catechists, and sacraments. The Jesuits administer baptisms and establish schools, creating a stable Christian presence in the kingdom. Chapter 11 - On the Kingdom of Tonkin Borri turns north to Tunchim (Tonkin), ruled by the Trịnh lords. He sketches its wealth, learning, and openness to European contact, predicting that Tonkin too will embrace Christianity, complementing the progress in Cochinchina. In his final chapter, Borri concludes with an exalted description of Cochinchina-its beauty, healthful climate, wealth in gold, silk, and aromatic woods, and the sweetness and liberality of its people. He insists that the land lacks only 'many of God's angels,' meaning apostolic missionaries, to become a piece of heaven on earth. He contrasts the openness of Cochinchina, where foreigners may live freely, with the restrictions of China, affirming that here the Gospel may flourish without disguise. Description
1985. unbound. Rare handwritten letter from David Letterman to Washington Post columnist Tom Shales. Written in 1985 on NBC letterhead, Letterman thanks Shales for a recent article and phone conversation. In that article, critic Tom Shales had noted that David Letterman cleverly declined an invitation to an inaugural gala by pleading a "longstanding family commitment." Shales pointed out this was likely a transparent excuse used by the studiously cautious host. Letterman jokingly ends his letter using the same line..."I would have written sooner but as you know, I have this long standing family commitment. Yours truly David Letterman. David Michael Letterman is an American television host, comedian, writer, producer, and auto racing team owner. He hosted late-night television talk shows for 33 years, beginning with the February 1, 1982, debut of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC and ending with the May 20, 2015, broadcast of Late Show with David Letterman on CBS. In total, Letterman hosted 6,080 episodes of Late Night and Late Show, surpassing his friend and mentor Johnny Carson as the longest-serving late-night talk show host in American television history. This item is from the collection of Television critic Tom Shales (1944 - 2024). Shales was an incisively funny Washington Post columnist, he earned the nickname Terrible Tom and had the clout to make or break shows. Shales won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1988. During his three-decade career those in the industry considered him both a kingmaker and a high executioner in an era when network television's hold on American culture was at it's peak. Time magazine called him "brilliant, thoughtful, incisive and screamingly funny...also, vicious, infuriating, cruel and unfair". His thrice-weekly Washington Post TV column, 'On the Air,' syndicated in 59 other newspapers. The Tom Shales collection includes letters, cards and correspondence from celebrated television and entertainment legends, newscasters and politicians, including letters from Norman Lear, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan O'Brien, Garry Shandling, Fred Rogers, Carol Burnett, David Brinkley, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and many more. Description
[Various locations], 1924. Very good.. [65] leaves, illustrated with 329 photographs between 2.5 x 1.75 inches and 5 x 7 inches, plus a small selection of ephemeral items. Oblong quarto. Contemporary limp black cloth photograph album, string tied. Minor scuffing to edges, some rubbing to boards. A wide-ranging annotated vernacular photograph album documenting the worldwide travels of Robert E. Lien of California. The album opens with an interesting manuscript note pasted in by the compiler, reading: "This Album is the Property of Robert e. Lien. Please do not rub your hands over the white ink, it rubs off." The photographs begin in Edison County, California, showing the landscape of the Sierra mountains, local buildings and businesses, orange growers in Yuba, an oil well fire in Santa Fe Springs, aerial views of San Francisco, views of the wrecked Union Oil tanker Lyman Stewart, and more. The California images account for roughly the first third of the album. One image of a steamship gives a clue to Lien's career, with the caption reading: "My home for 14 months. S.S. Columbia." Other images show Lien dressed in ship's officer gear, so he was perhaps a captain or sailor on oceangoing oil tankers. This would account for his keen interest in ships and boats, which feature prominently in numerous images in the present album, which were presumably taken by Lien while he was on the Columbia. Lien also visited numerous locations around the world which he documents in the album, with several images in the Panama Canal; shots of locals and other scenes in Manzanilla, Mexico and Corinto, Nicaragua; scenes in Melbourne, Newcastle, and Sydney, Australia; images of locals and local color in Saigon, Shanghai, and the Philippines; and more. Lien's detailed manuscript captions throughout provide vital identifications of locations, settings, and names for individuals he both knew and met along the way around the world.

Top-stapled self-wrappers all, except for #100, which is saddle-stapled. Various paginations, most 8-12 pages. Issues included are: #42, 43, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 53, 54, 56, 61, 74, and 100. Some minor toning, edgewear, some issues folded for mailing. Mailing labels of Doug Lang at Folio Books to most issues, several addressed to Terence Winch. Overall, sound.
