Description
Cairo, Egypt: islam Aly, 2025. Number 25 of 50 variant copies of a fascinating and complex new work by this esteemed book artist. Islam is a book artist and lecturer of bookbinding at the German University in Cairo. He earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Art Education from Helwan University, and later pursued an MFA in Book Arts at the University of Iowa, where he refined his artistic focus. He went on to complete a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Art Education at the University of Iowa. His practice lies at the intersection of culture, technology, and aesthetics. Drawing on historical bookbinding traditions and integrating digital technologies, Islam reimagines the role of the book in contemporary art. His work pushes the boundaries of book art, offering innovative approaches to how history and technology can coexist on the page. islam states: "As a book artist, I am drawn to the unique and versatile nature of the book form. Whether old or new, the book has always captured my imagination and challenged me to explore its physical properties and content in new and innovative ways. Through my work, I use book art to reflect on our contemporary time and explore the intersections between past and present. Books have a rich legacy in approaching social justice issues and giving voice to marginalized groups, and I strive to create books that promote empathy and belonging. He writes about his work: "The traditions and history of bookbinding inspire my artistic practice, and I am constantly exploring new ways to incorporate these techniques into contemporary book forms and ideas. I am passionate about studying the construction, materials, and techniques used in traditional bookbinding. I frequently experiment with laser cutting, waxing, stitching, and paper dyeing to create visually stunning and conceptually complex artworks. Ultimately, my goal as a book artist is to push the boundaries of contemporary book art while remaining true to the rich legacy and traditions of the book form. I am constantly engaged in the process of discovery and learning. I am deeply committed to creating artwork reflecting our collective past while promoting a more just and equitable future." Harf means "letter" in Arabic, highlighting the work's focus on individual letterforms. The piece consists of two compartments. The first compartment contains an artist's book that visually explores Kufic geometric script, one of the oldest and most architecturally structured forms of Arabic calligraphy. Each section of the book presents a single, letter rendered in a geometric Kufic form, celebrating the letter as both a linguistic symbol and a sculptural element. The book is composed of individually folded sections, with each folio featuring a different type of paper, including handmade sheets, decorated surfaces, and handwritten or textured varieties. This variation in material enhances the contrast between the crisp geometry of the letters and the rich tactile and visual qualities of the paper. The variation of paper types adds layers of meaning, emphasizing the uniqueness and rhythm of each letterform. At the same time, it evokes the historical layering of script and ornament found in Islamic manuscripts, drawing from traditional Islamic visual language while reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens. The use of papers reinforces the book's material presence and highlights the elegance and expressive power of Kufic calligraphy as a visual art form. The second compartment contains laser-cut letterforms made of plexiglass, echoing the designs featured in the book. A stand is included, allowing viewers to interact with the letters, displaying them individually or arranging them into visually engaging compositions using the geometric forms. Cloth-covered box with plexiglass components. Coptic-bound book with laser-cut and laser-etched plexiglass covers. Materials include handmade and aged paper, decorated paper, linen thread, book board, and museum board. In fine condition. Box size: 12.5 x 4.5 x 4inches, Book size: 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches. Chuck Jones Productions. Other. Fine. Studio City, CA: Chuck Jones Productions, [1992]. Vintage original 11 x 8 1/2" (29 x 22 cm) storyboards, 338 pp., in a loose leaf three-ring binder. Title page is detached but present. Inner front cover has affixed Chuck Jones Productions card with holograph note indicating collection as "copy #5". A few pages are hand-colored in ink, overall fine. Stay Tuned is a fantasy comedy movie directed by Peter Hyams. Chuck Jones Productions produced the film's animated sequence in which the two lead characters (Roy and Helen) are turned into cartoon mice. Chuck Jones himself designed the models for the mice versions of Roy and Helen and provided character pose layouts. The sequence was produced in the United States at a cost of about $800,000 and took six months and a team of five full-time and seven freelance animators. Segment producer and Chuck Jones Productions executive Steven Leiva said when they were coordinating with Hyams, they requested their team have the freedom to design appealing cartoon mice with the mannerisms and movements of Roy and Helen rather than capturing the likenesses of actors John Ritter and Pam Dawber, to which Hyams agreed and the team was allowed a high level of autonomy. During test screenings, audiences routinely singled out the animated segment as their favorite part of the movie. (Wikipedia) Needless to say, Chuck Jones storyboards are very scarce, especially an enormous collection such as this one.

Description
[New York, NY]: [unpublished], 1960. Very good. 11 ” x 9”. Brad-bound black paper folder, typed title card to front, holding a 30 pp. report, typed rectos only with handwritten amendments + 6 publications, 26 clippings and 2 photographs stapled to pages. Pp. [2], 42, [2, bibliography]. Very good: folder a bit edge worn; small tear to title label; light thumb-soiling to first page; a few pages somewhat creased. Contents generally very good plus though a few clippings are loose and one has offsetting affecting several words of text. This is an A-earning research report prepared by Clara Skipwith (later Dr. Clara “Skippi” Burgess), an African American woman studying at New York University. The paper thoroughly covers the state of the Belgian Congo during a period of extreme unrest, and is supplemented with rare publications, photographs, news clippings, maps and charts. Clara M. Skipwith was born in 1931, attended Morgan State College in Baltimore and New York University and earned her doctorate in early childhood education in the 1960s. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Dr. Burgess served as principal of the Langston Hughes Little People's School in the Bronx (New York PS 236) and on the faculties of Union Graduate College and City College of CUNY. She was active with New York's WLIB radio (long regarded as the “Voice of Harlem”) and the National Council of Negro Women. A recipient of a Ford foundation grant and a selection by Marquis Who's Who of American Women, Burgess traveled and lectured widely and authored numerous professional papers. She died in North Carolina in 2017. This report covers the crucial final months of political unrest and turmoil in the Belgian Congo leading up to independence in June 1960. Skipwith naturally focused on education as a factor, with charts from New York's Belgian Government Information Center relating statistics on types of schools, numbers of pupils, “European and African teachers” in the country. She also included 8” x 10” black and white photographs of former King Leopold II and “young King Baudouin of the Belgians.” There are a number of scarce, near pristine publications such as the June, September, November and “Special Edition” issues of Belgian Congo 59, monthly information bulletins located in OCLC only in bound volumes at 13 United States institutions. Others include The Mining Products of Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi (published at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair) with one holding in OCLC, and The Political Future of the Belgian Congo: The Royal Message and the Government's Declaration of January 13, 1959, with 14 holdings in OCLC, nine of which are in the United States. One great photographic news clipping shared that “Western-style education, here exemplified in a school in the Belgian Congo, is a principal weapon of the new African nations against the divisive force of tribalism,” and the report's final 12 pages are dedicated to 1959 New York Times clippings with headlines like “Violence Erupts,” “Tribesmen Flee Attack,” “Boycott Set,” “24 Killed in Riot,” “Congo Militants Claiming Victory” and “Tribe War Perils Liberty.” There is also an uncommon map of the region, dated 1953. Our author, with great foresight, opined that “Every day brings another question and another problem to the surface in the Congo. This is not the end of the political picture in the Congo, but the beginning.” The Congo Crisis began near immediately upon independence from Belgium, constituting a series of civil wars and political upheaval until 1965. A prescient exposition of unrest in Central Africa, written by an African American woman with a focus on education, including rare, important publications and extensive newspaper coverage.

"And yet behind the absolute eternal values of this opus there seems to be something temporary as well: just as in the magnificent texts you reflect upon today's communal ideas [...] it also appears that you (you who have always shown the younger generation [the way]) for once wished to demonstrate something after the fact, and thereby wanted to show that such simple forms which are generally associated with cheap communal music can also lay claim to the highest standards of artistry and proficiency." Alban Berg to Schoenberg, February 1931.
