St. Petersburg, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo. Half dark blue morocco with marbled boards, raised bands on spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt. 318 pp. + 1f. (recto publication details, verso blank). With line drawings Léon Bakst to title, p. [202], 208, and [211] + 3 illustrative plates of ancient ruins printed on coated stock. Cheap paper browned. Signatures slightly split at p. 99. Binding worn, rubbed, and bumped. Very early book illustrations by the important Russian artist Léon Bakst (1886-1924), dating from the year that he was first recognized as a stage designer; Bakst went on to execute numerous set and costume designs for Diaghilev’s revolutionary Ballets Russes. A scarce book, because of the condition, sold as is.
