Description
Wien [Vienna] & Leipzig: Gerlach und Wiedling, 1909. Near fine.. First edition of this stylish book of lullabies merging medieval and modern artistic influences. The aesthetics of this lovely little book dance the line between manuscript and print with a dash of Jugendstil: large ornamental "rubricated" initials nestle into musical notation and simple illustrations call to mind the figural borders of early printed books of hours, all with the bold contrast popular in German art of the early 20th century. Even the typeface mimics the bâtarde scribal script in use in Germany in the 14th and 15th centuries. DEUTSCHE WIEGENLIEDER is number 24 in the celebrated Gerlach's Jugendbücherei series of 34 books, noted for "combin[ing] contemporary artistry with popular fairytales and German legends" (San Diego State Library). Gerlach hired well-known German and Austrian artists to give a modern flair to traditional stories, which this title does particularly well. 6'' x 5.25''. Original blue pictorial cloth binding with yellow stenciled figures and gilt lettering. Green endpapers. Illustrated throughout in red, yellow, and blue, including musical notation. Text in German. 96 pages. Binding with a touch of fraying to spine ends. Slight cracking to hinges of endpapers, still firm. Colors sharp and bright.

Toledo, Ohio: Owens - Corning Fiberglass Corporation, 1939. Very good. Woven bookmark, with its original protective folder / advertising brochure and its glassine envelope; bookmark - 8 1/2 x 1 1/2, white fibers - with the following printed on it in blue: "Made at Glass Center, New York World's Fair 1939, Fiberglas, 100% Pure Glass;" fringed ends unraveled a bit; in about very good condition; brochure - 7 1/2 x 2; single sheet of card stock - folded and printed in white; minor wear along spine - in very good to near fine condition; envelope - 8 x 2 1/2; plain, semi-transparent, glassine paper with a bit of darkening to seams - in very good condition. Although the making of coarse glass fibers could be dated back to ancient Egypt, the first company to successfully manufacture and commercialize fiberglass on an industrial scale was the Owens - Corning Fiberglas Corporation in Toledo, Ohio. A lab mishap at Owens-Illinois Glass Company resulted in fine glass fibers, which were later adapted into a steam-blown manufacturing process in 1932. The company would form a partnership with Corning Glass Works in 1935 and would first introduce it as a revolutionary consumer and industrial material at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
