Description
London: by H[enry]. H[ills]. Jun. for Hen Herringman and R Bentley, and sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, 1691. 2nd or 3rd separate edition, an internally fine copy of it and other copies are not fine. As rare as any of the 17th century editions of Julius Caesar including the 1st of 1684 (census data is vague). That said, the glory of this copy is its quality. Early 20th century full red morocco by Rivière & Son, spine gilt titled, ruled in gilt with a French fillet, intricate gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges. Small paper flaw to the blank margin of page 21, else fine and rare in this condition, with large margins all around (8 7/8” X 6 1/2”), but most important, the pages are fresh and unrepaired. And it is also much finer than the other copies of it at auction in the last 40 years, all defective, or with repairs, or trimmed, and/or in poor condition, with only one copy at auction, of any 17th century Caesar separate edition, in condition close to ours ($33,750, at Sotheby’s, in 2011). Cloth case. No edition of Julius Caesar was published during Shakespeare’s lifetime, the posthumous collected works in folio being the sole authority for the play. It was revived by Thomas Killigrew’s King’s Company in 1672, using the original text, with Charles Hart initially playing Brutus, but no edition was published. Thomas Betterton took the part in later productions and is here named in the cast listed in our edition, with his boyhood friend Edward Kynaston as Antony. The 1st separate edition was published by Herringman in 1684 (the most common of the quarto editions), the year he turned over the retail side of his business to Francis Saunders and Joseph Knight, and the year before he published Shakespeare’s 4th folio. It was followed by 4 undated editions with closely similar imprints, and a 1691 dated edition with an imprint mentioning only Herringman and Bentley. No data positively ordering them is known, but in 1969 John Velz superseded Henrietta Bartlett’s 1913 bibliography. He thinks the 1691 edition was an authorized one, and identifies our edition as the first (QU1) of 3 unauthorized editions printed by Henry Hills Junior, the printer of the 1684 edition, and was issued in direct competition to Herringman’s 1691 edition, for which Hills was not re–employed as printer, so my guess is 1691, or it would not have been competitive, but we may never know for certain, because the data is so thin, and though the data for rarity seems firm, it would surprise no one if new discovery reordered them. Ref: John W. Velz, “Pirate Hills” and the quartos of Julius Caesar, BSA Papers, v. 63 (1969) 177–193.

Description
London: Adam Islip, 1601. First Edition. Good. Folio. 2 vols. in 1. [60], 614, [42], [12], 632, [86]. First edition in English of Pliny’s important encyclopedic work, which was, for centuries, considered the highest authority on subjects relating to the natural and physical world, including botany, zoology, geography, pharmacology, and more. Lowndes referred to this translation as a "work of immense labour, and what few men of his time could have executed in a superior manner to Dr. Holland." Near contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, black gilt morocco lettering labels, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, wear to binding and joints, ink notations throughout, especially to front blank and title-page, ownership signatures on title, page 9 of vol. I, and page 4 of vol. II, as well as some ink markings to the woodcut devices on the first few leaves of vol. I and the final leaf in vol. II. This is a huge book for 1601 and copies with missing, or duplicated, or misbound leaves are seen with more frequency than slimmer books or later ones. This one has the complete text and prelims, and it has the often missing errata, after the Preface in vol. I, and at the end of vol. II, though it is not without its faults. B iii and B iv in vol. II are chipped at the margins, just touching the marginal citations, these two leaves may be supplied, imissing Ppp (index vol/ 2), there is creasing to the first few and last few leaves, and minor insect damage near the end of volume II, but withal it is a good, textually complete copy. Pliny's encyclopedic work functioned for centuries as the highest authority on subjects relating to the natural and physical world, including botany, zoology, geography, pharmacology, and numerous other disciplines. Completed around 77-79 CE, the “Natural History” synthesized Greek and Roman knowledge within a single comprehensive framework, drawing from nearly 500 sources to create what became arguably the most influential scientific text of the pre-modern period. Philemon Holland's 1601 translation brought Pliny's comprehensive compilation to English readers for the first time. Lowndes characterized this as a "work of immense labour, and what few men of his time could have executed in a superior manner." Holland's scholarly approach preserved the technical vocabulary while rendering complex concepts accessible to readers lacking classical training. Pliny himself embodied the Roman aristocratic ideal of combining administrative service with intellectual pursuit. Gaius Plinius Secundus served as Vespasian's admiral while compiling his vast encyclopedia, demonstrating the integration of practical governance and scholarly endeavor characteristic of the Roman elite. His death during the Vesuvius eruption of 79 CE (killed by ash inhalation while investigating the catastrophe) exemplifies the empirical curiosity that drove his encyclopedic project.

Description
Shanghai: The American Association of China, 1905. Good. 9¾” x 7¼”. Cloth-covered boards. Pp. 34; 53. Good due to front board, endpaper and first leaf detached (but attached to each other); internally very good or better with penciled notes on issues' contents to ffep. This is a slim bound volume of two rare issues of the Journal of The American Association of China, concerning the United States' economic and scientific involvement in China and Manchuria. Released just two years after the Chinese Exclusion Act was extended and made permanent, amidst the backdrop of the Open Door Policy and the Russo-Japanese War, the issues include contributions from some of the leading American voices in Chinese relations and foreign policy. An opening editorial section of the first issue here noted that: “since the publication of the last issue of the Journal, events of world-wide importance have occurred which may lead to an entire reconstruction of the ideas of one half of the world in regard to the other half . . . to us who live in China, the future of this great country is naturally the most important feature in the Asiatic situation . . . In this great epoch in the development of the Orient, the United States will have its share . . .” The issue claimed that “the trade of China with the United States has grown more rapidly in recent years than with any other country,” and yet it was “not merely the prospect of mercenary and material gains which appeals to Americans in the upbuilding and renovation of the ancient Empire but also sympathy for the Chinese people and hope for their final independence.” There were blurbs on the Chinese Exclusion Act, mining regulations and the visit of Chinese Imperial Commissioners to the St. Louis Exposition. It also printed the latest edition of the Association's Constitution and Bylaws. The second issue ran an extract from the Far Eastern Review of Manila, revealing a parallel effort to Jenks' monetary reform work taking place in the Philippine Islands. Other blurbs concerned the admission of Chinese students to the United States, an American improvement plan for the “Whangpoo” river, rail and steamship service between the continents, trademarks and customs fees. Two rich journal issues covering United States foreign policy in China and the Far East. OCLC locates these issues at eight institutions.
