Description
London: Tinsley Brothers, 1873. First edition. Fine. First edition in book form (first published serially in Tinsleys' Magazine from September 1872 to July 1873). One of presumably 500 copies printed. Three small octavo volumes. [6], 303, [1, blank]; [6], 311, [1, blank]; [6], 262 pp. Complete with half-titles. Bound ca. 1910 by Zaehnsdorf in three quarter green crushed morocco gilt over green cloth boards ruled in gilt. Spines lettered and decoratively tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With the bookplate of Anthony Conyers Surtees on front pastedown. A superb copy of this very rare title. A Pair of Blue Eyes recounts the tragic love triangle between a young woman, Elfride Swancourt, and her two suitors from different socio-economic backgrounds: the ambitious but socially inferior Stephen Smith and the immature but established Henry Knight. "Hardy's third published novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes has often been overshadowed by the popularity of its successor, Far from the Madding Crowd. Yet it remains notable, not merely for showing the full emergence of those ironies of plot which characterize his later and better-known work but also for its autobiographical qualities. The setting, Stephen Smith's profession, his reasons for going to Cornwall, and even his embarrassment about his class origins: all these echo the circumstances of Hardy's courtship of Emma Gifford only shortly before he began writing the novel. The portrait of Elfride herself is perhaps the most interesting of Hardy's several attempts to capture the charm he found in Emma at their first meeting" (The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English). According to Michael Sadleir in his 'Comparative Scarcities' A pair of Blue Eyes is number I (Sadleir I). Purdy, pp. 8-13; Sadleir 1112; Webb, pp. 6-7; Wolff 2986. Fine.

1560. London, 1560.. London, 1560. The First Printed Work Devoted Solely to Criminal Law Staunford, Sir William [1509-1558]. Les Plees del Coron: Divisees in Plusiours Titles & Common Lieux. Per Queux Home Plus Redement & Plenaireme[n]t Trovera, Quelq[ue]; Chose que il Quira, Touchant les Ditz Plees. [London]: In Aedibus Richardi Tottelli, 1560. [xiv], 198 ff. Quarto (7-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Eighteenth century calf with later rebacking, panels with corner fleurons to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, corners repaired. Light rubbing to extremities, a few minor scratches to boards, corners bumped and lightly worn, hinges starting at ends, later armorial bookplate (a letter C beneath a coronet) to front pastedown. Title printed within woodcut architectural border, woodcut decorated initials. Some toning to text. Underlining and brief annotations to some leaves in a fine early hand, interior otherwise clean. An appealing copy. $1,250. * Second edition. First published in 1557, Staunford's Plees is considered a "principal book" by Pollock and Maitland, one that enables us "to trace our modern laws of crimes, from the later middle ages onwards." Based on Bracton, the Year Books and especially Fitzherbert's Graunde Abridgement, Staunford's treatise is divided into three parts. The first treats offences, the second treats jurisdiction, appeals, indictments, and defenses. The third addresses trials and convictions. Plees was written after Staunford was appointed judge of the common pleas in 1554. "The greatest" of his works, it "was the first legal textbook in England to adopt the practice of citing specific authorities for every proposition, and as such had a major influence on legal literature" (ODNB). Pollock and Maitland, The History of English Law II:448. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) (accessed online). English Short-Title Catalogue S117819. Description
5 pp. Folio (355 x 280 mm.). Notated in pencil with additional markings in colored ink. Signed and dated 2007. Tsontakis studied with Hugo Weisgall, Felix Greissle, and Roger Sessions. His honours include the Charles Ives Living Award, the Grawemeyer, two Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards (1989, 1992), a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1995), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, (1996) and numerous commissions. "[His] early works are written in a dissonant chromatic idiom not unlike that of Sessions. His musical language soon shifted, however, towards a classically-influenced style characterized by large-scale harmonic prolongations and what he calls 'the timeless gesture', a reference to the past through evocation rather than quotation. With the String Quartet no. 3 'Carragio' (1986) he arrived at an idiosyncratic tonal language propelled by a non-minimalist, Beethovenian use of repetition. Another primary feature of his work, particularly notable in the Byzantium Kanon (1986) and Stabat mater (1990), is the influence of sacred music of the Greek Orthodox church. Secular folk music of the same region figures prominently in the oratorio Erotokritos (1982) and other works." Eric Moe in Grove Music Online.

Description
1868. London: Pickering, 1868. Small 8vo, xiv, 96 pp. A good copy in original cloth, with a small amount of wear at spine ends, and the paper label on spine darkened and with two small chips. Rear end paper slightly foxed and one or two spots on occasional pages, but internally the book is a clean copy with just a touch of dusting to page edges. Small bookplate of John Johnson on front pastedown. § First printing after the exceedingly rare edition of 1783 known in about 24 copies. Bentley, BB, 129. "The original 1783 copies were seventy-two pages in length, printed in octavo by John Flaxman's aunt, who owned a small print shop in the Strand, and paid for by Anthony Stephen Mathew and his wife Harriet, dilettantes to whom Blake had been introduced by Flaxman in early 1783. Each individual copy was hand-stitched, with a grey back and a blue cover, reading "POETICAL SKETCHES by W.B." It was printed without a table of contents and many pages were without half titles. Of the extant copies, eleven contain corrections in Blake's handwriting. Poetical Sketches is one of only two works by Blake to be printed conventionally with typesetting; the only other extant work is The French Revolution in 1791, which was to be published by Joseph Johnson. However, it never got beyond the proof copy, and was thus not actually published. Even given the modest standards by which the book was published, it was something of a failure. Alexander Gilchrist noted that the publication contained several obvious misreadings and numerous errors in punctuation, suggesting that it was printed with little care and was not proofread by Blake (thus the numerous handwritten corrections in printed copies). Gilchrist also notes that it was never mentioned in the Monthly Review, even in the magazine's index of "Books noticed", which listed every book published in London each month, signifying that the publication of the book had gone virtually unnoticed. Nevertheless, Blake himself was proud enough of the volume that he was still giving copies to friends as late as 1808, and when he died, several unstitched copies were found amongst his belongings."
