Hinges fairly neatly repaired. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper
Description
London: Faber & Faber, (1963). First British Edition. Hardcover. Hinges fairly neatly repaired. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. Bloomfield A45b: 3000 copies, preceded by the American edition which had a larger printing. INSCRIBED and SIGNED "To/Hedwig [Petzold]/with love/from /Wystan" in 1963 on the front free endpaper and with seven manuscript corrections by Auden in the text. Sensational association copy! According to Humphrey Carpenter in W. H. AUDEN: A BIOGRAPHY (p. 69), Auden's "first sexual experience with a woman was when he went to bed with Frau Petzold ... and in the later period of the friendship he seems to have regarded her as a mother- or aunt-figure."

Description
London: Macmillan & Company Ltd, 1918. First edition. First edition. xii, 252 pp. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. Fine with a hint of toning to the spine cloth and shelf wear; bright and clean internally save for a name stamped on the title page; sturdy binding. Rare in commerce.Perhaps the standard World War I text on treating post-traumatic stress disorder, then called "shell shock." Those were different times. Yealland, a Canadian doctor working at the British National Hospital, basically believed that shell shock essentially didn't exist, or was merely a temporary condition that needed to be expelled by auto-suggestion, strong language, a spatula to the throat or, in the worst cases, electrical shocks directly to the patient's throat. His complete confidence in himself and his methods (touting an 100% success rate) inspired many at the time, but meant that history would not be kind to his legacy or the data he compiled.

Description
S. l. (England): By the author, 1830. Very good. Manuscript, n. d. (first half of the 19th century); single clream-colored sheet, with an elaborately-embossed margins and a hand-colored, pink band around edges; text in brown ink; light age-toning and a few minor spots; remnants from being previously affixed in a scrapbook to verso; in about very good condition. An amusing and a tad bizarre ode, it began: "But bless me! What two non-descripts together! The SHE - a pile of ribbon, straw and feather...a Bonnet! Aye, and an actual woman in it..." It continued on to mention Ross and Buchan (Arctic explorers James Clark Ross (1800 - 1862) and David Buchan (1780 - 1838)) - "Now for the HE...Have Ross or Buchan brought him to console, the quidnuncs for the passage to the Pole?" It ended with: "No, Paris has the honor...The thing is contraband - Let's crush the trade; LADIES insist on't - all is best home made."
