Minor foxing and toning but very good. Manuscript tables of contents in a 19th-century hand in each volume. Interesting and unusual collection of medical theses highlighting an important aspect of early and mid-nineteenth century public health. Incorporating studies of 45 distinct and varied places, this collection could be the basis of significant research projects on comparative medical geography and topography. The practice of medical topography-the study of the association between a region's specific geographical characteristics and the health outcomes of its inhabitants-goes back to Hippocrates's treatise On Airs, Waters and Places (ca. 400 BCE). Prior to the advent of the germ theory of disease in the late 1800s, medical topography formed a significant part of public health investigation, as can be seen in this collection of theses surveying the medico-geographical features of various parts of France and Europe. Medical topography can be seen as an ancestor of the modern disciplines of health geography and medical geography. The theses in the first volume describe the medical topography of Iceland, St. Petersburg (Russia), Belgium, Badajoz (Spain), Pamplona (Spain), Gibraltar, Rome, Patras (Greece), Naples and Corsica; the remaining two volumes contain theses on the medical topography of various parts of France. The earliest dates from 1803, during the time of the Napoleonic Wars; the latest dates from 1866, during the reign of Napoleon III. Several theses discuss the topic of intermittent fever, which is commonly caused by malaria. .

New York, 1961. Very good.. Broadside, 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Remnants of old tape at top and bottom edges, minor soiling and wear. Handbill advertising a "bus brigade" to Washington for the opening of Congress in 1961 in support of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. Powell would be seated as chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor starting in 1961, after fifteen years as a Congressman. This flyer continues, "Don't let them unseat Adam! Join the bus brigade leaving Tuesday, January 10th, - 3:00 A.M. (for Opening of Congress) from Alfred E. Isaac Dem. Club 2495 7th Avenue, $8.00 round trip (return same day)". It advertises three locations one can purchase tickets and the event is sponsored by the Committee to Seat Powell. Powell was an important but controversial figure in the Civil Rights movement, helping to desegregate schools and pass other key legislation. He was later accused of misconduct and misuse of funds. We find no record of this handbill in OCLC, though copies may be hiding in various collections of ephemera. Rare and ephemeral.

A very rare, if not unrecorded, offprint of an interesting article by notable African-American social activist Bayard Rustin, focused on support for Israel within the Black community. The article was here reprinted from the November 1970 issue of Keeping Posted by the Youth Committee for Peace and Democracy in the Middle East. Rustin's text states that the Black community supports the existence of Israel because, among other rasons stated here, they agree with "the progressive ideals and values which a nation like Israel represents." Rustin also calls upon the youth of America to educate themselves on the "Middle East crisis." Rustin was, at the time he published the present article, executive director of the A. Philip Randolph Institute. No copies of this offprint edition reported in OCLC.

From dust jacket: Critics and historians of French literature have for years accepted Francois de Malherbe as the fountainhead of French classical poetry, believing that he directly or indirectly influenced the production of most of the French poets of the seventeenth century. Those who opposed him blamed him for imposing restrictions on the century, while Boileau’s exultant proclamation of Malherbe as the savior of French poetry has been accepted as the ultimate verdict of the great classicist’s followers. Yet to admire a poet is not necessarily to imitate him, and to oppose him is not necessarily to deny his influence. Until the present study, the extent of Malherbe’s influence has never been fully documented. Mr. Abraham, by examining the prosody of most of the seventeenth-century poets, proves that seldom were Malherbe’s precepts actually followed in practice. In choice of poetic forms, rhymes, rhyme schemes, and language, few even attempted to attain Malherbe’s “classical ideal.” He shows, too, that Malherbe neither initiated the reaction to the sixteenth century poetic nor succeeded in establishing a “school.”
