Description
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1908. First American edition, published from the London sheets.. 24 cm; 2 volumes. Frontispieces, 3 color maps, two of them folding; 139 black-and-white photo illustrations. Publisher’s original black cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt with a map tracing Amundsen's route from Norway to Nome, Alaska (different from the design on the British edition). Top edge gilt. Very minor wear at spine edges, else fresh, crisp, and blemish-free. References: Tourville, 227 (London edition); Arctic Bibliography # 402 (London ed.). First American edition (from the London plates) of the first English translation of Amundsen's account of the three-year journey through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific (a goal that had eluded explorers for centuries). Amundsen's success was due in part to his choice of a small, shallow-bottomed ship capable of squeezing through shoreline channels that heavier vessels could not manage.

Description
London: James Nisbet & Co., Limited. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. at the Ballantyne Press, London and Edinburgh, 1897. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Attractive full calf binding, with gilt centerpiece of Queen's School emblem, by Relfe Brothers Limited of London. We assume this was bound as a reward or prize for a student who somehow distinguished himself. All edges are marbled. Endpapers have a different marble design. 8vo. 18 by12.5 cm. xii, [2], 340 pp. Profusely illustrated, with most illustrations co-mingled with the text, but a few plates as well, the plates counted as two pages in the pagination. Note the book doesn't give the name of the author, nor the date of publication. This copy, rebound by the school, dispensed with the publisher's advertisements that followed the text. The spine is sunned. The joints are heavily rubbed and have surface roughness, and the leather on the spine has some surface degradation as well, but less so. The perimeter of the half-title. Otherwise the leaves are clean, the text block, tight.

Description
Warren J. Wightman, 2014. Soft Cover. Fine. 7x0x10. An exceptional copy. 2014 Soft Cover. iv, 349 pp. '44 Foxholes in France is a factual day-to-day account of the author's personal experiences in 1944 as a WW-II infantryman in the American Third Army. Starting as a draftee private, he debarked at Utah Beach, was promoted several times in combat, finally to platoon sergeant before being wounded in the battle for Metz. Much of the story has to do with the need to face the realities of ground combat, the differing abilities of the men, and the challenges of leadership in extreme situations. Though not a "hawk" or a "professional veteran," the author found that in certain difficult situations, stepping up to responsibility is the only acceptable option. The book contains 12 maps, 8 of which show details of individual engagements. S-3 Operations Reports typed during combat are included as an appendix. Also: extensive chapter notes, photos of weapons, a glossary of GI and foreign terms, pencil sketches, poetic impressions, an index, and web-links to related material.
