Description
London: John Bale, Sons & Danielsson, Limited, 1923. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good +. Octavo. xxiii, [1], 418, [2] pp. Complete with four plates. Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt. Binding is very bright and clean aside from small smudge to upper board. Toning to endpapers at gutter. Neat contemporary underlining to a few leaves. In the publisher's dust jacket, a bit crinkled at edges. A bright, Very Good+ copy in like dust jacket. Dr. Marie Carmichael Stopes (1880 - 1958) was birth control advocate, botanist, geologist educated at University College, London and the Botanical Institute in Munich. In 1905, she became the youngest doctor of science in Britain, and found employment at the British Museum, the University of Tokyo (under a grant from the Royal Society), and as a lecturer at University College. Stopes' interest in sexology developed in the early 1910s as she began working on the manuscript of what would become Married Love (1918), in part inspired by her exploration of her own sexuality. In 1915, she met Margaret Sanger, "who had fled to England to avoid imprisonment for disseminating contraceptive information...Stopes was active in getting up a petition to President Woodrow Wilson to drop the charges" (ODNB). The meeting with Sanger deepened Stopes' connection with (and enthusiasm for) the birth control movement, and she published five popular works on sex and birth control between 1918 and 1920, most notably Married Love, which "created a new genre of marriage manual...[and] literally changed lives," and Wise Parenthood (also 1918). In 1921, Stopes and her husband, Humphrey Roe, opened England's first birth control clinic and founded the Society for Constructive Birth Control. Over the course of the next few years, Stopes opened several more clinics throughout England (both in London and in more rural locations, as well as a mobile clinic) and offered training to nurses and doctors. Stopes' involvement in the birth control movement faded after the 1920s, but her work in the movement cemented her legacy as an advocate for women's bodily autonomy and healthcare access. Stopes published Contraception in the midst of a legal battle: between 1922 and 1925, Stopes was embroiled in Stopes v. Sutherland, a protracted libel case. Stopes had brought the case against Henry Sutherland, a Catholic doctor who opposed birth control, after he accused Stopes of "taking advantage of the ignorance of the poor to subject them to experiments" in her birth control clinics and implied that she should be jailed. The case emboldened Stopes, however, and she published her textbook during the appeals process after the case was partially ruled against her. Baskin, Five Hundred Years of Women's Work, 238. Very Good + in Very Good + dust jacket.

Description
Easthampton, MA: Abecedary Press, 1990. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 8 of 10 deluxe copies signed by the artist. This Abecedary Press Production's book was written by Mark P. Carol, as a contemplation inspired by a trip to the Galapagos Islands to view Haley's Comet. It is a humorous look at contemporary social and sexual values through the guise of rocks (occasionally referred to as the "pet rock turns 30-something.") Alan James Robinson illustrated the book with two handsome wood engravings and seven line drawings depicting the Galapagos Islands, the Galapagos Tortoise and of course, the Banging Rocks. Alan is a renowned book artist who has been producing fine limited edition books since the 1980s. His work can be found in many institutions nationally and abroad. This engaging deluxe production's book is bound in quarter leather green Moroccan goat with a millimeter leather fore-edge and Japanese Chiri (bark) paper. The book and its set of two actual banging rocks of green Beryl crystals from Connemara, Ireland are "housed" in an elaborate hand crafted cherry dove-tailed jointed wooden box with expansion joints. This geo-stable enclosure was crafted by Allan Wheeler and protects the Banging Rocks, which are of a semi-precious nature. Printed in Centaur & Arrighi types set by Dan Carr at Golgonooza Type Foundry on T.H. Saunders Hotpress Watercolor paper. Printed by master printer H.P. McGrath. Bound in paper over boards by Kim O'Donnell. In fine condition. Book measures 5 x 8 inches. The box is 5.5.x.8.5 x 3 inches. Unpaginated [32 pages]. ARTISTB/071020.

Description
Cambridge [UK]: Univ. Press, 1890. First Edition. Original publisher's cloth.. Good; some rubbing to the cloth.. 8vo, xii, [1] - 317, [1 - printer's slug], [2 - adverts] pp. This "revised" account is in fact a new work extending the efforts of his initial experiments on air resistance prior to 1880. Those experiments were limited to lower velocities and specific projectile shapes. The effort here is to establish a universal equation to determine resistance and hence flight characteristics for hyper-sonic projectiles of all kinds. It took Bashforth years to complete his analysis and establish reliable range tables - the simple end of some very complex calculations. An important book (the introduction to the text is a summary of the complexity of the problem).

The 14th book in the classic boy's adventure series, in which Tom Swift uses a portable motion picture camera powered by battery, dynamo, or hand crank. "Tom Swift is a fictional young inventor in five different series of juvenile science fiction and adventure novels. The character was created by Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a book-packaging firm, and have been written by a number of different ghostwriters over the years. The books are published under the collective pseudonym Victor Appleton (or, in one case, "Victor Appleton II"). The character first appeared in 1910 and has appeared in new titles as recently as 2007. Each of the various series focuses on Tom's inventions, a number of which pre-date actual inventions. The character has evolved over the years, but in general the books portray science and technology as wholly beneficial in its effects. The books have been translated into a number of languages and sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Tom Swift has also been the star of a board game, an activity book, and a television show, and a feature film is planned. A type of pun, the Tom Swifty, is named for the character, and a number of prominent figures, including Steve Wozniak and Isaac Asimov, have cited Tom Swift as an inspiration. Several inventions, including the taser, have been directly inspired by Tom's fictional inventions.

Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1989 Trade Paperback. vii, 128 pp. The ability to analyse a position properly is one of the most important qualities of a good chess player, yet there are few aspects of the game that the average player seems to find more baffling. Twice U.S. Champion Lev Alburt seeks to clarify the grandmaster's approach to the related processes of calculation and positional assessment. Introducing the reader to a system of numerical evaluation developed originally by players in his native Russia, he goes on to demonstrate the value of the chess graph as an aid both to one's understanding of the game and to one's results. Providing numerous exercises, Alburt concludes with illustrations of the application of his ideas to the search for opening innovations, making special reference to his own great favourite, 'The Benko Gambit.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: How social and economic conditions have precipitated advances in engineering. A Social History of Engineering shows how social and economic conditions in each age have precipitated advances in engineering. There are, in short, economic, political, and philosophical implications in changing technologies. While the book begins with the Stone Age, the Greeks, and the Romans, the bulk of the volume concentrates on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A Social History of Engineering reflects Professor Armytage's special subject area interests, namely nineteenth-century industrial society, radical and socialist movements, the history of professional organization, and the study of higher and technical education.(Publisher).
