Description
New York: Farrar & Rinehart Inc, 1942. Advance Reading Copy. Very Good+. Advance reading copy, issued before the first edition, with publisher's slip laid in and "Sample copy - not for sale" stamped to upper edge of textblock. viii, [2], 1013, [1] pp. Bound in publisher's printed wraps reproducing dust jacket of hardcover edition, map endpapers tipped in at front and rear. Very Good+ with wear to wraps, light soiling to wraps and textblock edges, and crease to spine. Housed in a green cloth clamshell case titled in gilt on the spine, lightly worn with a touch of dampstaining to the upper edge. Rare The Harvard-educated legal scholar Austin Tappan Wright spent many years developing his childhood fantasy of a place called Islandia into a utopian novel with worldbuilding to rival Tolkien's. "The author saw every view from its near detail of farms, trees, or gardens on to the horizon," writes his daughter Sylvia in the postscript to this book. "He knew what geological forces shaped its outline; he knew what winds were blowing and how the changes of season crept slowly over Islandia." After Wright's death in a car accident in 1931, his widow and daughter began the ten-year task of pruning the manuscript into a publishable, though still massive, novel. The publisher's slip declares the book "one of the most exciting of our adventures in publishing." A 1942 Kirkus reviewer admitted that he expected to be "a trifle bored" but found himself deeply interested in the "well-rounded, documented, social studied country." Max Saxton, who edited the book for Farrar & Rinehart, was so fascinated by the work that he later wrote three sequels.

Description
New York: Underwood and Underwood, 1919. First Edition. Gelatin silver prints, 7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches each on 11 ½ x 7 inch black paper mounts, captioned with affixed text. Very Good. Two WWI-era press photographs related to the Negro 15th Infantry Division of the New York National Guard (a.k.a. the 369th US Infantry Regiment) and their white commander, Colonel William Hayward. One photograph shows the division on parade in New York following their return from combat duty in France in 1919, the other is a well-known image of Hayward, who organized the all-black unit and served as its leader. Fighting for a record-breaking 191 consecutive days alongside French troops in the trenches, the regiment became known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.” The opportunity for African-Americans to serve in WWI arose from the Selective Service Act of 1917, which drafted all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty. Special segregated training camps were established and units were formed. The US National Archives states that 200,000 African-Americans served in Europe during WWI, but only 42,000 saw combat. When the 15th Infantry arrived in France in 1918, Hayward was committed to the idea that his unit would fight on the front lines. After General Pershing refused to integrate them with the full US army, Hayward pushed for another assignment, under French command. Unlike many other segregated divisions in WWI, the 15th (aka 369th) was eventually sent to the trenches. Its members' distinguished service brought honor and fame. Before leaving the US in 1917, the regiment had not been allowed to participate in the New York National Guard’s farewell parade. When they returned victorious, Hayward ensured they were publicly honored. Both with various press stamps to versos. Small closed tear of about a half inch to upper edge of parade picture, good overall. Hayward portrait with some rippling at edges, very good overall.

Description
Waltham Saint Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1928. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/good +. One of 500 copies, duodecimo size, 67 pp., with original dust jacket. We find etiquette books such as this a delight to read, providing as they do glimpses into a world long gone. This book, for example, contains a chapter on the then-new "waltzing" with a warning to parents about the perils of unmarried couples touching. The Contents lists such topics as "Introductions", "Visitors and Visiting", "Waltzing", "Marriage", "Servants", and "the Philosophy of certain Fashionable Observances". This charming publication by the Golden Cockerel Press contains four engravings on copper by Hester Sainsbury (1890-1967) who, although apparently had no formal art training, provided the illustrations for the first book of the Favil Press, a small collection of Sainsbury's poems, among many others (see Horne p. 381). She "became a successful artist and print-maker in the 1920s, being known among other things for using an engraving tool that cut multiple parallel lines rather than the usual one. She made fine art prints and illustrations by engraving both copper and wood. The author Philip Neil describes her engravings as 'fresh, supple, and irresistibly charming' " (n.b., quote from Wiki). Arthur Freeling, although having penned several books on etiquette including this work, as well as a "Railway Companion", never earned an entry into the DNB (Dictionary of [British] National Biography) and therefore we are unable to shed any light on his life. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in parchment with special printed boards, gilt lettering on the shelfback, fore- and bottom edges uncut, "Publisher's Note" dated 1928 setting forth the hope that "despite the passage of time and the inevitable slight variation of manners" the book would still prove worthy, followed by the author's "Preface to the Edition of 1838", four copper engravings throughout the text, original pink ribbon marker; Caslon O.F. type on hand-made paper, duodecimo size (7" by 4.75"), pagination: [i-x], 1-55, blank [56], colophon [57]. Dust jacket of rose-coloured paper with black lettering and decorative border around title on the front; unclipped although no price printed; the volume sold new for 15 shillings in 1928. ___CONDITION: Volume could almost be deemed fine, the parchment shelfback without wear (although with light dustiness), the paper boards clean (having been protected by the dust jacket), the text block strong and sturdy with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light foxing to the text block edges, light offsetting to the front endpaper, the ribbon marker still attached but frayed at both the top, where it is attached to the book, and at the bottom. The unclipped dust jacket a bit better than good, slight overall edgewear and light dustiness, sunning to the spine, and a prior owner affixed cello tape at the head and tail of the spine (both recto and verso) as well as at the bottom of the back panel (verso only) where there is a smal chip with a short closed tear. Even with these minor issues still a lovely copy of a charming publication, done in the seventh year of the Golden Cockerel Press. ___CITATION: Chanticleer no. 56. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. 1960. THESIGER, Wilfred. ARABIAN SANDS. London: Longman, 1960. 9" x 6." With 68 Photo Illustrations, 7 maps, Large map in pocket, 326pp. Original Cloth Hardcover, in Dust Wrapper. First Edition, Second impression, (first published in 1959), of a fascinating travel account in Arabia, Abu Dhabi & Oman across the Empty Quarter, which includes several maps of Arabia and a chapter on both Abu Dhabi and the Trucial Coast. Major Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger (1910-2003), also known as Mubarak bin London (Arabic for "the blessed one from London") was a British explorer and travel writer. During the Second World War, Thesigner fought in Abyssinia and in the Western Desert. All this was only a prelude to his great adventures which he so vividly describes in Arabian Sands. By dressing, eating, almost thinking like a native, Thesiger came as close to living the life of a Beduin Arab as a Westerner ever will. His descriptions of the fantastic privations they endure without complaint, of their strange customs, of their innate loyalty and generosity as well as their fierce fighting, from a magnificent picture of these little-known people and provide invaluable reference and source material. Arabian Sands is the story of a unique and remarkable adventure -one that no other man could have lived, one that can never happen again. Dust wrapper worn at edges with a small 1cm tear on top edge of verso, otherwise book in very good condition.

From Introductoin: The story of the Don Ce-Sar Hotel in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida, is a series of mountains and valleys. For a while things go well. Then something happens. The economy nosedives, the owner dies, a project is abandoned and everyone moves out. Then, much like the legendary Don Caesar DeBazan for whom the building was named, there’s a sudden reprieve, a new life, and the Don blossoms for another era of usefulness. Don Caesar is the hero of Vincent Wallace’s opera “Maritana.” In the story he is sentenced by Spain’s King Charles II to be executed by a firing squad. But the guns misfire. The smoke clears, and the Don stands unharmed. Miraculously he is saved and pardoned. Similarly the Don Ce-Sar Hotel seems to lead an equally charmed life. Wrecking crews were about to destory the building in 1971 when local citizens fought to save it. This book is more than just the story of a well-known landmark. It’s a testimony to the reader that persistence pays. The amazing rebirth of the discarded Don was the work of many. Together they proved the efficacy of that famous passage from Romans, “All things work together for good.”
