Description
France: np, 1965. First edition. Very Good. Cecil Beaton. INSCRIBED BY PICASSO IN RED AND BLUE CRAYON TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER, CECIL BEATON: "pour Cecil Beaton. Ami Picasso 9.6.65.". Cecil Beaton (British, 1904 -1980) photographed virtually every prominent person in public life over the course of his career, which spanned more than half a century. Everyone from the Queen to the Rolling Stones sat before his lens. As an arbiter of glamor, the opportunity to sit for Beaton represented the pinnacle of success for many, but in some cases it was Beaton who pursued the sitter, and he had followed Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881 - 1973) long before they first met. As one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century, Picasso was sought after by many who wanted to rub elbows with success. He became one of those whom Beaton photographed several times over a period of many years, first at the rue de la Boetie in Paris in 1933, then at the rue Augustins in 1944, and finally at Mougin in the south of France in 1965. (Vickers). In addition to taking photographs, Beaton wrote about Picasso in his private diary, sketched his portrait, and after the 1965 sitting wrote a profile of Picasso for Vogue Magazine. Photographs from Picasso's home in the hills above Mougin reveal a close bond between the two men. Here they appear relaxed, comfortable with one another, and with a gleam in their eyes. By then Picasso was 84 years old and still painting late into the nights. Writing in Vogue, Beaton describes Picasso's energy as he gave Beaton a tour of the sprawling studio crowded with paintings, some still wet with paint and others from decades before. Beaton wrote of Picasso's welcome: "Pablo said 'It has been twenty years since I last saw you!' A golden Picasso threw open his arms. 'After so long we must embrace.'" The two then made much fun about the passage of years and how they had aged. (Beaton). A clear sign of affection, Picasso inscribed select prints and dedicated them to Beaton. Picasso writes in red and blue crayon on this print: pour Cecil Beaton. Ami Picasso 9.6.65. The print stands as testament to the kinship between the two artists. Provenance: With stamp "From the Beaton Studio / Sotheby Parke Bernet" on verso (sold, Sothebys Parke Bernet, 1978). Also with stamped notation "1/1" possibly indicating that this is a unique print. We have not been able to locate any others. Silver gelatin print. Signed, inscribed and dated by Pablo Picasso "pour Cecil Beaton / Ami / Picasso 9.6.65" in red and blue ink (recto). Image: 111⁄4 x 73⁄4 in. (28.5 x 19.6 cm.); sheet: 111⁄2 x 91⁄4 in. (29.2 x 23.4 cm.). Majestically framed to an overall size of 24 x 19.5 in. Small abrasion evident to the right of Beaton's left ear; otherwise fine. References: Vickers, Hugo, ed. Cecil Beaton: Portraits & Profiles. London: Frances Lincoln, 2017. P 152. Beaton, Cecil. Description
Vienna: Julius Springer, 1935. First edition. Original printed wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF POPPER'S LANDMARK IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE. A seminal work in the philosophy of science, Karl Popper's 1935 Logik der Forschung [Logic for Scientific Discovery] proposes the idea that scientific theories can never be verified, only falsified. Popper, in this his first monograph, critiques the inductivist view of scientific method in favour of his empirical falsification, and argues that scientific discovery is not a matter of induction or confirmation but rather a matter of conjecture and refutation. POPPER, KARL. Logik der Forschung zur Erkenntnistheorie der Modernen Naturwissenschaft. Vienna: Julius Springer, 1935. First edition, issued as volume 9 of Schriften zur Wissenschaftlich Weltauffassung. Octavo (5.5 x 8.5 in; 140 x 216 mm), vi, 248, [2, publisher advertisements] pp. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers slightly rubbed with some mild wear around edges, separation between some of the quires, but holding; a few light pencil marks. An excellent and very well-preserved copy of the rare first edition.

Description
N.P., 1960. Very good. One commercial scrapbook, brown cloth over boards, measuring 12½” x 11¼”, and over 100 loose leaves with a total of 274 pages and 434 pieces of comic book clippings pasted down and 15 pieces of original art laid in. Generally very good or better. This is a monumental collection of clipped strips, scenes and characters from the popular Katy Keene comic, complete with several pieces of original fan art. The character of Katy Keene was created by Bill Woggon for Wilbur Comics #5 (part of the Archie Comics series) in 1945. Marketed as “America's Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions,” Katy was a fashion designer, model and actress, driven by career ambitions and not, like other female characters, solely by romance. Readers were encouraged to submit their own designs for Katy's outfits; Woggon would draw them in and give full credit to the fan, printing their name, age, hometown, and sometimes a bio or photo as well. After several appearances in Archie books, Katy got her own title in 1949, with various spinoffs until 1961. She was revived by a fan in 1979, and officially by Archie Comics from 1983 to 1994. Katy Keene was given life again in 2020 as part of the New Riverdale comics line – this time on a television show. The series focused on Katy's female friendships (over romance, once again) as well as issues of gender in the workplace. A TIME magazine review noted it was “Less about finding Prince Charming than it is about making your artistic dreams come true.” These albums are stuffed with comic clippings, ranging from one- to two-inch characters or outfits to full-page scenes, and a few portions of comic books intact. We see “Katy Keene in Sea to Outer Space” with “rocket fashions, etc.” by 15-year-old Bonnie Turner of Buffalo, New York, as well as on the set of “Katy's Dream Movie” and “a true story at Woggon Wheels Ranch.” Other characters appear, like cowboy “Curly Cassidy,” Katy's beaus “K.O.” and “Randy,” her little Sis,” best friend “Lucki Lorelei” and professional rival “Gloria.” Designs for her clothes and cars were devised by her fans, as were storylines and poems; Marilyn, 13, of Illinois wrote: “Katy is the Queen of Beauty / K.O. and Randy thinks she's a cutie . . . Lucki Red and Gloria, the / Rest in a Row / But Katy, wonderful, is the Star of this Show!” One reader sent ideas for her own wedding dress, seen modeled by her idol. Other clippings reveal “Katy's Mad Hatter Jokes,” “Honeymoon Homes,” fairy tale stories and “Fashions of the Ages.” Woggon printed “Dance Pin-Ups for your album and pin-up collection” as well as “Katy's Pin-Up Board” featuring photographic head shots of 38 young fans. Over a dozen pieces of our compiler's original art and sketches are laid in. A fantastic collection of comic book clips, with a focus on fashion, ambition and the welcomed creativity of readers.

New York or Boston presumed: Amory, Browne & Co., Boston and New York, 1924. First Edition. Paper. Stapled. Near Fine. Charming company product promotion that seeks to get at the buyer, the parent, by hooking the child through a ersatz children's book. An example of a not insignificant genre of commercial publication, with here, at least, the product being pushed is one that is meant for children -- crib blankets, and a Nashua Storyland Blanket meant for young children. But also being pitched are blankets and throws for anyone. Published by Amory, Browne & Co., a fabric company which was making the Nashua blankets being promoted here. Printer unknown. Oblong, 7.5 by 11.5 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pages, including covers. Color printed illustration on every page, and sometimes two small color vignette illustrations, with the only larger, or full page illustration, on the front cover, and two other pages blank but for the small color illustration (inside front cover, a few leaves and the sun, and the rear cover, of a cat balanced on a bar). 23 short poems, mostly four line, generally adaptations of Mother Goose nursery rhymes, modified to plug or minimally reference the Nashua company, but one four liner is a prefatory poem setting up what is to come, and a few are not Mother Goose but based on fairy tales such as Cinderella. The last five pages speak more directly about the company's products, with color vignettes of different patterned blankets. The illustrations redound with charm. Especially appealing is the cover showing a doll in bed with the Storyland Blanket, which is a blue blanket repeating the internal vignettes but on the blanket the illustrations are all rendered in simply white -- a sort of reverse silhouette. All the verse pages excepting the first have a greenish background color. Scarce -- no copies listed on OCLC. Condition: a tack hole, or slight roughness, upper left front cover. Flattened tiny dog ear, front cover. Minor soiling front and rear. Small abrasion area on rear cover. Generally clean. Easily Very Good, and in our view, Near Fine.

Front cover corner lightly creased. 1990 Trade Paperback. xx, 322 pp. "In 1902, at the age of six weeks, Don Burnap arrived at Fourth Lake in a packbasket. His parents, and brothers and sisters, began to carve a homestead from the wilderness surrounding the Fulton Chain of Lake, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. This is the story of how a family of seven lived in a camp by the shore, between woods and waters. They provided most of their own food, kept a horse and cow or two, and lived what seems to us now, a quiet and isolated life. Yet, with the nearby railroad, and the lake traffic, there was always something interesting happening. Here are stories of the community schoolhouse, the camp-building, the train wrecks, and the tragic accident which claimed Burnap's father's life. And this is the story of how the homestead evolved, and eventually became a popular resort, with multiple cottages and staff. For forty-seven years, Don Burnap was the Captain of the Fulton Chain mailboat, a unique dock-to-dock postal service. His recollections of camps, grande dame hotels, and native Adirondackers are all recorded in these pages.
