Very Good in Good dj
Description
New York: Whittlesey House / McGraw-Hill Book Company. Very Good in Good dj. 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid copy, moderately shelfworn, light dampstaining to bottom of text block, slight bumping at upper rear corner; the jacket has a small dampstain surrounding the base of the spine, chipping at the top of the spine, and some wear and one tiny nick along the top edge]. "The warm, intimate portrait of an Irish-American family, the Callans, and their full, eventful lives in New York in the gay twenties and the lean thirties. [This] heart-warming and penetrating story is made of the very stuff of American family life: neighborhood gang fights, a high-school dance, a funeral which the children turn into a riotous picnic, and a boy's fierce pride in his father who umpires the Sunday-morning baseball games." The author drew on his own family life for the novel, set in an Irish neighborhood in the South Bronx. This copy bears the ownership signature of screenwriter Robert Presnell, Jr. Unaccountably uncommon, with no copies offered online as of January 2025. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." Description
Various: Various, 1930. Nine booklets, brochures, and leaflets, various dates (ca 1930s - 1940s); some illustrated with photographs, drawings, tables, etc.; generally mild wear - occasional smudges and light creasing; in very good to near fine condition. At the beginning of the 20th century, venereal diseases (VD) like syphilis and gonorrhea were widespread and endemic, though they also carried immense social stigma and were rarely discussed publicly. Treatment was toxic and largely innefective, often involving only symptomatic remedies. Attitudes would begin shifting in the 1930s and by 1940s thanks to mass media campaigns, mandatory testing, and rapid treatment centers. The current collection was aimed at both medical professionals and the public - under the "Stamp Out Venereal Diseases" public health slogan. Some were written by William F. Snow, MD - General Secretary, The American Social Hygiene Association - and distributed by the State of California's Bureau of Venereal Diseases, others by the California State Department of Public health, etc. - Snow, William F., MD "Health for Man and Boy."
