Description
London: Methuen & Co, 1965. First Edition. 1st edition. Near fine in a very good dustjacket (just rubbing to its edges). Contemporary signed, presentation copy, inscribed in ink using his stage name, David Baron, to Vivien Merchant, his wife, the lead actress and the only woman in the play (she is seen on the jacket in a scene from the play). Half morocco case. Ex–Edwin Erbe, publicity director at New Directions. In 1965 The Homecoming premiered at London’s Aldwych Theatre. In 1967 it went to Broadway where it won the Tony Award for Best Play and became a driving force behind Pinter’s 2005 Nobel Prize. It was a sizeable rotation in drama, accentuating the spoken word as weapon and the unspoken word as eloquence, and it was a potent child of the 1960s, though plays are one of the less differentiated (less recognized) of the arts invigorated by the cultural revolution. This was the play that established Pinter, and we apologize for the redundancy, but again, this is the best copy of it in the world.

Description
1904. Near fine. 3pp, 4to. Holograph manuscript in pen (in French), writing on the rectos only, the first two pages are filled with text, the last page is trimmed, with only 4 lines and Mirbeau’s signature. Creases, stains, smudges, offsetting, but cleanly written, legible and very good. An article for the left-wing newspaper L’Humanité, published 25/Sept/1904. The newspaper was founded only a few months earlier by SFIO leader Jean Jaures, who also served as editor. In the article, Mirbeau criticizes France for its refusal to intervene in the Russo-Japanese war. With biting irony, he mimics the indifferent French attitude: "Let's wait two, five, ten twenty years, if we have to... We'll keep on slaughtering each other over there... But what are we risking?... Life is good, our restaurants are still the best in the world... There are still the prettiest girls in the theaters of Paris." He exposes the hypocrisy of French foreign policy: "as allies, not of the Russian people, whose infinite sufferings, like those of all peoples, are of absolutely no concern to us, but as allies of the czar, whose glory alone is important to us, let us be no less faithful czarists than the czar himself is." Drawing a powerful parallel, Mirbeau connects the mounting casualties of the Russo-Japanese conflict with the Armenian massacres—which had already reached devastating proportions by 1904. A different but contemporary newspaper clipping is laid in (seemingly part 2 by Mirbeau): it records a conversation with a merchant marine captain recently returned from the Far East who, despite personally witnessing naval battles, admits he comprehends little of the war's true nature beyond scattered, disturbing details he finds too horrific to fully describe. The early 1900s, particularly 1904-1905, marked a transformative period in the development of anti-imperialist critique within European leftist thought. The Russo-Japanese conflict illuminated the contradictions within Western powers' foreign policies, particularly France's relationship with Tsarist Russia. The French left's growing disillusionment with the Franco-Russian alliance exemplified broader ideological shifts that would shape socialist internationalism for decades. As ordinary Russians died for imperial ambitions while French elites remained indifferent behind a facade of nationalist solidarity, socialist thinkers increasingly recognized patterns linking capitalist interests to colonial violence. This period also witnessed the emergence of more sophisticated leftist analyses connecting imperial competition abroad with class exploitation at home. The juxtaposition of European indifference toward both the Russo-Japanese War casualties and the Armenian massacres demonstrated how Western powers selectively applied humanitarian concerns based on strategic interests—a critique that would become central to anti-colonial movements throughout the 20th century and presage the internationalist anti-war position that would later fracture the European left during World War I. Octave Mirbeau (1848-1917) emerged as one of France's most incisive social critics during the Belle Époque, developing a literary voice defined by moral outrage and stylistic innovation that transcended conventional boundaries between journalism and literature. His artistic sensibilities were profoundly shaped by traumatic experiences—including abuse at a Jesuit school and service in the Franco-Prussian War—which fostered his lifelong commitments to anarchism, pacifism, and the defense of individual dignity against institutional power. Beyond his novels exposing societal hypocrisy, including the controversial "Le Jardin des supplices" (1899) and "Le Journal d'une femme de chambre" (1900), Mirbeau distinguished himself as a prescient art critic who championed misunderstood avant-garde figures like Van Gogh, Rodin, and Monet, recognizing artistic genius that his contemporaries often dismissed. His prolific output—spanning over twelve hundred works across multiple genres—consistently demonstrated his willingness to confront uncomfortable truths about violence, sexuality, and power that bourgeois society preferred to ignore, establishing him as an intellectual forerunner to modernist aesthetic and political movements of the twentieth century.

Description
New Brunswick [NJ] / Philadelphia: I Riley & Co. / For E Bronson, printed by Thos.Smith, 1806 / 1802. First Editions.. Full contemporary calf.. A very good copy; x-lib. with a stamp on the title and first page of text of the Johnson; binding rubbed and chafed.. 8vo; I - [2], viii, 246, [6] + 8 plates; II - [4], [3] - 324 pp. I - A rare and wholly American work that contains one of the earliest dissertations on wine making and vine planting published in the United States. Pisè building is a method of construction that makes use of compacted soil to form load bearing walls for structures (a form of construction still used in parts of Asia). One of the plates in the book illustrates a building that was constructed by Johnson using this method. The section on wine is important because he draws upon local sources whom he identifies. Little is known about Johnson. He is, however, identified as being a correspondent of T Jefferson concerning the publication of this book. Hitchcock #652; Rink #2508; Felcone #813. II - My colleague David Lesser has summed the book up quite well, so here it is again: After achieving power in the 'Revolution of 1800,' the Jeffersonians' first major test of strength was their effort to repeal the Judiciary Act of 1801, passed in the waning days of Adams's Federalist Administration. The Act created eighteen federal circuit judges, additional district judges, and enhanced the Judiciary's power. Not only did it, in Jefferson's view, strengthen the national government at the expense of state judiciaries, but "the Federalists used their last moments of power to establish themselves in the posts it created. In Jefferson's words, they retreated into the Judiciary as a stronghold." Adams, History of the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson 187. This book tracks the entire debate in the Senate; the Preface recognizes its importance as "the great question of the independence of the judicial department of our government." With "discussion of judicial review and legislative supremacy" [Cohen]. AI 3273 [4]. Cohen 1058. Sabin 19101. Not in Marvin, Marke, Harv. Law Cat.

[8], 311, [9]pp. Lyons: Antoine Cellier, 1659. 225 x 167 mm. Speckled sheep c. 1659, rubbed, small wormhole in front cover. Some foxing, browning & dampstaining, old repair to one leaf. Very good copy. Old signature and notes on endpapers. First Edition. Riviere was the first to describe stenosis of the aortic valve, from a case that he treated in 1646. GM 2727 cites Riviere's description of this condition in his Opera medica universa (1674), of which the present work is the first edition; the description appears here on p. 177, and is entitled "Cordis palpitatio & pulsus inaequalitas." Riviere also brought Paracelsian iatrochemistry into the curriculum of the University of Montpellier, and it was under his auspices that Alexander Fraser introduced the Harviean theory of the circulation into the University's curriculum in 1636. An edition of the present work was published in The Hague in the same year as this Lyons edition. As Riviere was French it is reasonable to presume that the Lyons edition was first. Hirsch. Leipzig: Gleditsch the Elder, 1704. Revised and annotated edition. Hardcover. Very good. Four parts, long duodecimo (17 by 7 cm). [46: title; dedication; reader's preface; author's introduction; contents], 1344 pp. Title in red and black; engraved frontisportrait; printed marginalia. Contemporary vellum wrapped in decorative paper covers with gilt morocco lettering piece. Edges stained red. Small worm trace at bottom margin early leaves; occasional faint dust soiling. A very good, clean copy. Revised and annotated Latin edition of this influential theological work, which has been called an "Evangelical Imitatio Christi," first published in German at Braunschweig between 1606 and 1609, in four parts. The pastor and writer Johann Arndt (1555-1621) attained his highest professional position in 1611 as general superintendent and court preacher in Celle. "Arndt tried to breathe new life into the rapidly petrifying Lutheran church, to which he nevertheless remained true... [H]e meant to revive the active moral forces in Christianity and showed little interest for dogma, his sole effort being directed toward the re-establishment of a closer relationship between man and God. The Pietists renewed the interest in Arndt's works and regarded him as their predecessor. Paul Gerhardt was deeply influenced by Arndt" (Faber du Faur, pp. 28-29). "Drawing on medieval mysticism (Bernhard, Angela von Foligno, Tauler, Thomas von Kempen, Theologia Deutsch) and Valentin Weigel, Arndt emphasized the subjective (living) faith in Christ... He always maintained his orthodoxy, and not wrongly, even though his emphasis on the unity of faith and ethics was modeled more on mysticism than on Luther. So he found joyful approval and bitter hostility in the ranks of the orthodox Lutherans... The extent to which Arndt, despite the mystical-ethical features, hit a sore spot in Orthodox doctrinal law with his portrayal of Christian life is shown by the deep impact of his writings, which extended into Catholicism and were translated into almost all European languages and have been continually republished up to the present day" (NDB). Description
Bussum, Netherlands: C.A.J. van Dishoeck, 1921. Softcover. Near Fine. Softcover. One of 200 copies. Now scarce. This is a lovely small book in Dutch with a poem by well known writer P.C. Boutens. Pieter Cornelis Boutens (1870 - 1943) was a Dutch poet, classicist, and mystic. His debut as a poet was the Utrecht Student Almanac in 1891. His early work was inspired by the verses of Herman Gorter; later sources of inspiration were Plato, Sappho and the Bible. Boutens' style became based on the idea of achieving a "higher reality". In the course of 45 years, he published some 20 volumes of poetry, but also a large number of translations of Ancient Greek (i.a. Iliad and Odyssey), Persian, French, German and English poets. CAJ van Dishoeck was a Dutch publishing house that was founded in 1889 by the founder of the same name. Cornelis Anthonij Jacobus van Dishoeck (1863 - 1931) was a member of the Van Dishoeck family, which came from Zierikzee and was included in the Dutch Patriciaat .After his education and experiences in bookstores between 1880 and 1888 (including in Leipzig ), he settled in Leiden and started a publishing house there in 1889. In 1898 he moved it to Amsterdam and finally to Bussum in 1903 where he called his villa Zeelandia. In the Netherlands he published work by Johan de Meester , but also the famous Beatrijs by PC Boutens and other works by that poet, such as Alianora .Van Dishoeck's publications were known for their beautiful design. He also attracted artists such as Jan Toorop and Jan van Krimpen . He also chose well-known artists such as Edzard Koning and Willem Vaarzon Morel for the illustrations . Moreover, he often published luxury editions of his publications: on handmade or Japanese paper, bound in full parchment or full leather, often in small, but sometimes unknown editions [Wikipedia Dutch version]. The five striking black and white woodcuts ncluding title page) were done by Joan Collette (1889 - 1958). He was a Dutch engraver, graphic designer, illustrator, monumental artist, painter, glass painter, wall painter, draughtsman, manufacturer of mosaics and bookbinding designer. Bound in plain white paper wrappers with a dark blue cover with a printer device in red on the front cover. Very light signs of handling. Interior pages are clean and bright. Printed in black letter type with occasional blue Initials. Near fine condition. Measures 5 x 6.5 inches. Unpaginated. [18 pages] PRI/111523.

Mission, BC Canada: Barbarian Press, 2025. Softcover. Fine. Softcover. One of 120 copies. This is the 4th of the Loose Canons pamphlets, a series conceived by the Press to draw readers' attention to poets whose work, once well known, has fallen into the shadows & become lost to sight. The poet, Merrill Moore (1903 - 1957) became one of youngest members of the 'Fugitive' group of poets - named after the journal they founded, that included John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, and Robert Penn Warren, all of whom became influential among the generation of American poets between the wars. Moore's inclination toward the sonnet led to his entire output consisted of sonnets save for a few early lyrics. It is sometimes said that he created the "American" sonnet. The pamphlet was hand-set in Van Dihcj type and printed on vintage Holcombe paper. Sewn in blue paper covers with the title in black on the cover. In fine condition. Measures 7.25 x 12 inches. 19 pages PRI/012126.

She wrote a series of juvenile mysteries, as well as works dealing with more serious themes.
