Description
A Selection of a Highly Important Archive KERVORKIAN (Jack), MD: Selection from his Archives from the Sale of his Estate, collectively dated 1982-2007. Sold four months after his death, Dr Kervorkian's archive comprises nearly a dozen historical lots inventoried in his estate auction sale, a copy of the catalogue is likewise included:1. 2pp. typed interviews transcript with three San Quentin death row inmates and subsequent 2pp. signed Petition of 27 Death Row Prisoners in support of execution by lethal injection as opposed to lethal gas, as the former would allow use of the prisoners' body parts for organ donation while the latter would not. (42)2. Handwritten letters (3 sheets) from patient Joe Tushkowski to JK dealing with arrangements for an assisted suicide with Jack Kevorkian's initials and notes. (43)3. Four typed letters from Judge Amnon Carmi, signed, of an international scientific journal MEDICINE AND LAW, with JK carbon responses (often on verso), 1985-88, dealing with their acceptance to publish Dr Kevorkian's article "Opinions on Capital Punishment, Executions and Medical Science". (44)4. Photocopy of a manuscript letter JK interviewed in Ohio 1958 + copied letters by JK (with response) from a doctor in the Netherlands (1998) as regards procuring organ donations from the terminally ill. (45)5. Typed letter by David P Willis, Milbank Memorial Fund (1987), signed, to JK acknowledging receipt of his paper "Exact Thinking on the Buying and Selling of Human Organs", and the difficulty in finding qualified reviewers. (47)6. Twelve Letters of Rejection, chiefly 1982-89, to JK as regards the publication of his articles or even his advertisements offering professional services from the Journal of Medical Ethics (London), Western Journal of Medicine, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, The Lancet, a fax refusal from Michigan Bishop Don Ott, &c. (49, 50)7. Typed Letter of Condemnation from Nobel Laureate in Biology Dr. George Wald to JK, signed, with two copies of Dr. Kevorkian's typed response. (53)8. Four retained copies of letters JK sent 1985-91 and a press release (1998) dealing with JK's intent to assist in "rational" suicides, also with an offprint from the Canadian Med Association Journal of JK's contribution "Capital Punishment and Organ Retrieval" (1987). (54)9. Four closely written holograph sheets (7pp.) by Jack Kevorkian listing the books he had read while in prison, with a list of famous inventions and inventors, and select quotations by famous people, on sheets on prison stationery with notes and occasional commentary by JK. (57)10. Four sheets with neatly hand-written text by JK dated 15 September 2000 to send many people (including Justice William Rehnquist) while he is still in prison. This fully explains what he has done, what it has accomplished, and what are the Nation and World communities' responsibilities for the near-dying population of the world and their rights. (58) Jacob "Jack" Kevorkian (May 26, 1928 – June 3, 2011), commonly known as "Dr. Death", was an American pathologist, social activist, advocate of the terminally ill, painter, author, composer and instrumentalist. He is best known for publicly championing a terminal patient's right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he claimed to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said, "dying is not a crime". In 1999, Kevorkian was arrested and tried for his direct role in a case of voluntary euthanasia. He was convicted of second-degree murder and served eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence. He was released on parole on June 1, 2007 on condition he would not offer suicide advice to any other person. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Description
Chicago: HMH Publishing Co, 1953. First edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy. 280 x 210 mm. Printed in black, white, and red aside from the full-color nude of Marilyn Monroe, the "Sweetheart of the Month." Publisher's white wrappers titled in red and printed with an illustration of Monroe. Crease to one corner of front wrapper and a small smudge near the illustration of Monroe. Otherwise, an excellent copy. The very first issue of Playboy, which marks the beginning of both the iconic and controversial men's magazine and the global brand. In conceptualizing the magazine, Hugh Hefner (1926 - 2017) imagined an audience of sophisticated, city-dwelling men who eschewed the outdoor activities that preoccupied most contemporary men's magazines in favor of an evening spent "mixing up cocktails and an hors d'oeuvre or two, putting a little mood music on the photograph, and inviting a female acquaintance for a quiet discussion on Picasso, Nietzsche, jazz, sex" (p. 3). Of course, the magazine also owed much of its popularity to its full-color nude photographs of the "Playmate of the Month" (originally the "Sweetheart of the Month," as here), beginning with Marilyn Monroe in this first issue. Along with the nude features that made the magazine notorious, Playboy has also published the work of prominent writers and activists over the course of its nearly seventy-five-year run. The writing of Vladimir Nabokov, Ian Fleming, Gabriel García Márquez, Margaret Atwood, Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin were all featured in the magazine throughout the twentieth century, and the famous "Playboy Interview" featured countless famous subjects including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Bowie, Grace Kelly, and the Beatles. The combination of nude photography, high-quality writing and reporting, charming artwork (including the cartoons of Shel Silverstein and Pulitzer winner Jules Feiffer), and shrewd promotion by Hefner drove Playboy to a peak circulation of over five and a half million throughout the 1970s. The magazine eventually expanded into dozens of international editions, about ten of which are still operating digitally or in print, and into clothing, alcohol, and other merchandise labels globally - the Playboy bunny is probably one of the most easily recognizable modern trademarks. Though the magazine's readership has significantly diminished, and print operations have been inconsistent since 2020, Playboy still represents a massive pop cultural force that has, for better or worse, influenced American attitudes around sex and masculinity for the better part of a century. Near Fine.

Description
2/10/92. October 1992 was the home stretch of the re-election campaign of President George HW Bush.  Although he had successfully managed and won the war in Iraq, a flagging economy and strong challenge from Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton did not bode well.  And on October 1, Ross Perot, who had announced his candidacy in February and then withdrawn in July, re-entered the campaign, meaning there would be a challenge of a third party likely to draw votes away from Bush.Bush had a close friend and political backer who helped him during campaign season, and whom he appointed to the American Battle Monuments Commission. This backer had a young son with Cystic Fibrosis who had hit a rough patch and needed surgery.During this trying and busy time, Bush took the time out from his hectic schedule to write this sick boy, who was just 14 at the time.  Autograph letter signed, on White House letterhead, Washington, October 2, 1992. ""Dear Billy, Your dad is my friend. He told me you're fighting hard. Get well quick.  I'm thinking about you.  Good luck, George Bush."" This is a very uncommon Bush ALS as president. This child would receive a lung transplant which dramatically increased the length of his life. It is a powerful and touching story that involved the personal intervention of the President of the United States. We have withheld the identity of the boy for his privacy.  This unpublished letter has never before been offered for sale.

Description
"Our late warfare was expressly founded on such principles as these: 'All men are created equal: They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'.... Those who profess to understand and regard the principles of liberty should cheerfully unite to abolish slavery...." In 1784, Connecticut passed a law that all slaves born after March 1, 1784, were to be freed before or when they reached the age of 25. In 1790, a group of clergymen, lawyers, and academics formed the Connecticut Society for the Promotion of Freedom and for the Relief of Persons Unlawfully Holden in Bondage to support the law. Yale University president and Congregationalist minister Ezra Stiles, formerly a slave owner, served as the society's first president. Here, Rev. Doctor James Dana reviews the history and extent of slavery in the world. Calling it unjust, unchristian, and against the principles of the American Revolution, he urges abolition. Dana's sermon, and those preached at the Society by Jonathan Edwards Jr., Theodore Dwight, and others, were among the most popular anti-slavery literature from the period. However, the Connecticut Society lapsed and disappeared after the turn of the century. JAMES DANA. Pamphlet. The African Slave Trade. A Discourse Delivered in the City of New-Haven, September 9, 1790, before The Connecticut Society for The Promotion of Freedom. Half-title: Doctor Dana's Sermon on the African Slave Trade. New Haven: Thomas and Samuel Green, 1791. Evans 23308. 33 pp., 4¾ x 8¼ in. Excerpts: So then, brethren, we are not children of the bond-woman, but of the free. – Epistle to the Galatians, IV.31 Christianity is a reasonable service, and founded in personal persuasion. It permits us to "call no man master; for one is our master, even Christ"; to whom alone everyone must stand or fall. His religion is friendly to free enquiry: It directs us to "prove all things"—to claim the liberty of grounding our faith, not on the wisdom of man, but the power of God; and to allow others the same. Our liberty may not be judged of their consciences, nor their liberty of our conscience. They who are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak; and should take heed lest by any means their liberty, their improved knowledge in Christianity, should be a stumbling block to uninformed minds.... The Africans belong to the families for whom heaven designed a participation in the blessing of Abraham. We need not discuss the question, what the state of those, whom the Europeans have enslaved, was antecedently to such their slavery. It is more proper to enquire when and how the African slave-trade commenced—what nations have engaged in it—in what manner they have carried it on—what the probable numbers they have reduced to slavery—in what condition these slaves are held—and what reasons are offered in vindication of the trade.... Twenty million slaves, at £.30 sterling each, amount to the commercial value of £.600,000,000… traffic in the souls of men!!! By whom hath this commerce been opened, and so long and ardently pursued? The subjects of their most faithful, most catholic, most Christian, most protestant majesties, defenders of the faith… with the sanction of St. Peter's successor. Unprovoked, without any pretended injury, these have kindled and kept alive the flame of war through three quarters of the continent of Africa…. These have taught the Africans to steal, sell and murder one another. On any or no pretence the different tribes make prisoners of each other, or the chiefs seize their own people, and drive them, as herds of cattle, to market.... Christianity and humanity would rather have dictated the sending books and teachers into Africa, and endeavors for their civilization. Have they been treated as children of the same family with ourselves? as having the same Father, whose tender mercies are over all his works? as having the same natural prerogatives with other nations? Or have they been treated as outcasts from humanity?... Admitting these just principles, we need not puzzle ourselves with the question, whether a black complexion is a token of God's wrath? If attempts to account for the color of the blacks, by ascribing it to climate, or the state of society, or both, should not be perfectly satisfactory (and perhaps they are not), shall we therefore conclude, that they did not spring from the same original parents? How then shall we account either for their origin or our own? The Mosaic, which is the only account of the origin of mankind, doth not inform us what was the complexion of Adam and Eve.... Those who profess to understand and regard the principles of liberty should cheerfully unite to abolish slavery.... The revolution in the United States hath given free course to the principles of liberty… The spirit will spread, and shake the throne of despotic princes. Neither an habit of submission to arbitrary rule in church and state, nor the menaced interference of neighboring kingdoms, could prevent, or counterwork, a revolution, propitious in its aspect on the rights of other nations, and of mankind. No combination of European potentates can impede the progress of freedom.... In vain do we assert our natural and civil liberty…provided we ourselves are not made free from the condemnation and dominion of sin. If there is such a thing as slavery, the servant of sin is a slave—and self-made. The captive, prisoner and slave, in an outward respect, may be free in Christ, free indeed; while he who enjoys full external liberty, may, in regard to his inward man, be under the power of wicked spirits…The new Jerusalem is free in a more exalted sense than the church on earth…. In that day of complete redemption, of glorious liberty, may God of his infinite mercy grant that we may meet all the ransomed of the Lord, with songs and everlasting joy…" James Dana (1735-1812) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard University in 1753. In 1758, he was ordained and made the pastor of the Congregational church in Wallingford, Connecticut. That caused a rift in Connecticut Congregationalism, as opponents viewed him as representative of the liberal school in Boston. In 1768, the University of Edinburgh conferred on him a Doctor of Divinity degree. He returned to America, and gained support due to patriotic sermons in the period leading up to the American Revolution. In 1789, he became the pastor of the first church in New Haven, remaining there until 1805. Provenance Ex-New York Public Library, with duplicate stamp on the verso of title page, and a pencil note by Wilberforce Eames, Chief of the American History Division, on the half title. Description
1954. Columbia Pictures, On the Waterfront, 1954, documents a pivotal work in American film history addressing labor corruption, union violence, and individual moral resistance within the dockworker communities of New Jersey. Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Marlon Brando, the film draws on investigative journalism exposing organized crime influence in waterfront unions. It supports research into postwar labor history, Cold War-era political themes in cinema, and the development of performance techniques associated with method acting. Archive of 7 original vintage silver gelatin photographs produced for theatrical display, each measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches in glossy black and white. The images depict key scenes featuring Marlon Brando alongside co-stars Rod Steiger and Eva Marie Saint, including moments of confrontation, dialogue, and dockside activity that emphasize the film's urban setting and dramatic tension. Several photographs retain printed captions, production credits, and copyright information in the lower margins, while one example includes a descriptive caption affixed to the verso. The visual composition highlights the film's emphasis on realism, with location-based imagery and character-focused framing. Produced during a period of shifting filmmaking practices, On the Waterfront marked a movement toward more naturalistic acting and socially engaged narratives in American cinema. Brando's performance became a defining example of method acting, influencing subsequent generations of actors and altering expectations of screen realism. The film's engagement with labor corruption and personal conscience resonated within the political climate of the 1950s, particularly in relation to debates surrounding authority and dissent. Light handling wear with minor edge wear; images remain sharp and well-preserved; overall very good. A focused group of promotional stills from a landmark film in American cinematic and cultural history.

Description
Washington DC, 1829. Unbound. Very good. This free-franked stampless letter signed by Senator Mahlon Dickerson measures 15.5” x 9.75” unfolded. It is datelined “Washington 12th Feby. 1829” and was sent to James Parker, the Collector of the Port of New Jersey at Perth Amboy. It bears a circular Washington City postmark dated the same day. In nice shape. The letter reads in part: “The Legislature of New Jersey are about to pass if they have not already passed an act for making the Delaware & Raritan Canal to be suspended . . . until Congress shall subscribe 500,000 Dols for that purpose. . .. I wrote to the Governor the passage of this bill might be considered as an indefinite postponement of the whole concern. It will be years before we can obtain a subscription to the amount under current circumstances. . .. “I will use my utmost endeavors to accomplish the wish of the Legislature on this subject – but I consider the passage of the bill as reported a serious misfortune to the state. . ..” . The intended purpose of the canal was to provide expedited shipping through New Jersey between New York City and Philadelphia, specifically for the transportation of eastern Pennsylvania anthracite coal. Many miles and hundreds of hours would be cut from the existing route from the Pennsylvania coal region down the Delaware, around Cape May, and up the occasionally treacherous Atlantic Ocean coast to New York City. The route was strongly opposed by politically powerful riverbank property owners, especially those who owned mills, who feared increased river traffic would impede their livelihood. Surprisingly, after years of opposition, the legislature granted a charter to the canal a year later; however, most of its funding was required to come from private sources. Just when it appeared all private sources had dried up, Robert F. Stockton pledged his immense family fortune as collateral and work began in earnest. The canal was almost entirely dug by Irish immigrants using hand tools. It wasn’t completed in 1834, at a cost of nearly $3 million (about $90 million in today’s dollars). Its heaviest use occurred between 1850 and 1870 when Pennsylvania coal fueled America’s industrial revolution. [For more information, see "The Delaware & Raritan Canal: The Past, The Present and the Promise" at The College of New Jersey website.] A unique firsthand account of some of the politics related to the building of the canal, made all the more interesting by the senatorial autograph of Mahlon Dickerson who also served as a New Jersey Governor, the Secretary of the Navy, and a United States District Court Judge. At the time of listing, nothing similar is for sale in the trade, the Rare Book Hub shows nothing similar has appeared at auction, and OCLC shows no records of similar institutional holdings. .

quarto, one page letter, written on blank leaf of printed circular letter, Liverpool Prices Current, with stamp-less address leaf, well worn, with some loss of handwritten text from extensive separation along folds, repaired with archival tape. 1846, British Merchant condemns American Anti-Rent Movement Goodwin could offer no "safe encouragement for a man on your side to ship to this … it hardly ever happens that a profit is made on such business except when the shipper anticipates an increase in our prices. Our Wool Market is dull and buyers complain of your American Wools being imperfectly washed and not regular in quality. Your wool dealers having something to learn in the trade … I thank you for a Newspaper. When you write next pray tell me what you think of the Anti-Rent movement, is it possible for that to succeed? Woe to your boasted liberty and constitution if it does and the tyranny of a King or an Aristocracy is better than that of selfish Mob. Do you in the States read Cooper's Novels? His latest series ending with Ravens Nest are occupying attention on this side of the Water." The so-called "Anti-Rent War" of 1839-45 was a movement for land reform in upstate New York, where wealthy "patroons" owned all the land on which Hudson Valley tenants lived, and used feudal leases to maintain control of the region. After a virtual insurrection was suppressed by militia, and leaders of the revolt were tried on charges of riot and conspiracy, delegates from 11 counties met to create an Anti-Rent Party to redress their grievances by political action. As a result, by the time this letter was written in 1846, a new state Constitution had been adopted, adding provisions for tenant's rights, abolishing feudal tenures and leases, and, in effect, dissolving the remaining patroon manors. The "selfish" democratic "Mob" had triumphed.
