Description
[n.p., London], 1893. Original artwork. Near Fine. Twelve fine original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings illustrating Oliver Twist, signed by the artist. Quarto (11 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches; 286 x 225 mm). Done on fine laid paper. Original blue wrappers with "12 Original Character Studies from 'Oliver Twist' Drawn in colors by 'Kyd'" in ink manuscript on front wrapper. Wrappers expertly repaired. Housed in a green cloth portfolio. The Toby Crackit plate a little browned on margins. Near Fine. Kyd has faithfully recreated some of the immortal and lovable characters from one of Charles Dickens' most famous novels. The characters of the novel here represented are Oliver Twist, Fagin, Nancy, Bill Sikes, Mr. Bumble, the Artful Dodger, Charley Bates, Noah Claypole, Toby Crackit, Mr. Sowerberry, Mr. Grimwig, and Mr. Brownlow. Joseph Clayton Clark, a.k.a. "Kyd" (1856 - 1937), worked as a freelance artist with a particular affection for Dickens, his Dickens illustrations first appearing in 1887 in Fleet Street Magazine, with two collections soon to follow: The Characters of Charles Dickens (1889) and Some Well Known Characters from the Works of Charles Dickens (1892). Beginning in the 1920s, he earned his living from watercolor sketches, mainly of Dickens' characters, which he sold to and through the London book trade. Frederic G. Kitton gives him early notice in his classic text, Dickens and His Illustrators (1890); Kyd's watercolors were at that date already being avidly bought by major Dickens collectors (Kitton, p. 233). "As a character 'Kyd' emulated those of Dickens and his own illustrations - slightly larger than life. In his style and dress he was mildly flamboyant for the period...He seldom varied his attire from a grey suit, spats, homburg hat, gloves and was never without a carnation or substitute flower in his button hole" (Sawyer, Kyd, p. 7). Near Fine.

Description
London: Robert Riviere & Son, [N.D.]. Temple Press Edition. Near Fine. Finely bound by Riviere & Son in half calf over cloth, with ornate gilt to spines. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 170 x 105mm and collating complete with frontis, half title, and full title to each volume. A Near Fine set, with some minor marks to closed text blocks of several volumes and small bump to the crown of Shirley. In all, a lovely, square example of these important feminist novels. The moorlands surrounding Haworth Parsonage "had a profound influence on the writing of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte...at their home the children created a rich imaginary world. Any books that came their way were eagerly devoured, and they produced their own books as well" (Bronte Society). As the sisters rose to adulthood, their novels began to focus on the complex emotional lives of women from all walks of life -- from orphans to governesses to heiresses -- but with the greatest emphasis on those whose educations and livelihoods most reflected their own. With clear-sightedness, they used their knowledge of gendered, economic, and social constraints to develop their best material. Again, the moorlands of their upbringing affected their writing. Anne's work was like a still day before a storm. And "if Charlotte's novels keep up a stiff wind, Emily's one novel is a thunderstorm. Their characters...have such a gust of life that they transcend reality" (Dean). Publishing under gender neutral pseudonyms of Currer Bell, Ellis Bell, and Acton Bell, the three talented authors were able to release their works to the public without the kind of criticism that fell on women of the time. It was with the publication of Anne's second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, that the women were forced to reveal their true identities when an unscrupulous publisher attempted to use Currer Bell's name to sell another, less successful author's works. The literary fame that came with the Brontes' revelation led only to a short lived happiness, as all three died at early ages. Yet their legacy remains in the rich literary work they left behind, which continues to inspire scholarly attention as well as a range of popular interpretations and reimaginings. Near Fine.

Description
Paris: L'Edition d'art H. Piazza et Cie. 4 Rue Jacob, 1907. First trade edition. Contemporary three-quarter red morocco over cockerel boards, rules in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Cockerel endpapers. Original front wrapper printed in gold and blue bound in at front. Fifty full-color plates with captioned tissue guards, mounted on cream-colored stock. Minimal rubbing to joints, otherwise a Near Fine copy. Originally published as Stories From the Arabian Nights (1907). Here translated into French from the original Arabic by Hadji-Mazem. The Leicester Galleries commissioned from Dulac the fifty water colours, retaining the copyrights, and, with Hodder and Stoughton, brought out the book. It was an overnight sensation that unequivocally established Dulac's reputation. "The Arabian Nights illustrations caught the attention of all the contemporary reviewers. The October Bookman published Dulac's portrait with the prophetic caption: 'those fifty colour illustrations for The Arabian Nights will soon be the talk of the literary and artistic community'...Recognition also came from Black & White magazine...'A new illustrator has arisen, and of the strength and originality of his work there can be no two opinions'...The London Times followed... : 'Mr. Dulac's distinction is that he is as good on the poetical side as on the grotesque...he has a truly exquisite sense of colour, and of noble design...'" (Hughey). At the time, Edmond Dulac was only twenty-five years old.

Front cover and spine decoratively lettered in blue. 83, [1, blank] with nine full-page color plates. A Near Fine copy. MOSAIC BINDING — [DUGUET, Jacques-Joseph (1649-1733), abbé]
Seller
Musinsky Rare Books, Inc. (United States)
Description
Paris: (Jacques Vincent for) Jacques Estienne, 1708. 2 parts in one, 12mo (binding 137 x 85 mm). [16], 284, [4], 252, [12] pages. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initial. Ruled in red throughout. At the end is a 4-page catalogue of books sold by Jacques Estienne. (Bifolium g6-7 in part 2 bound in reverse order.) Mosaic binding of black morocco, probably ca. 1725-1735, covers with an all-over design of repeated concave-cornered lozenges of onlaid light brown morocco, within a blind-tooled lattice design of double fillets and tiny six-petalled blossoms, spine in six compartments, five similarly decorated, each with one onlaid lozenge, second compartment with onlaid silver-tooled brown morocco lettering-piece, doublures of dark brown morocco with silver-tooled arabesque roll border, edges gilt over marbling (rehinged, upper joint chipping); modern suede-lined morocco folding box. Provenance: Paul-Louis Weiller (1893-1993), bookplate, his sale Paris, 30 Nov 1998, lot 32; modern booklabel, “non nove sed nova," initials CL.*** A mosaic “tile” or tessellated binding, attributable to Antoine-Michel Padeloup, on a popular Jansenist devotional text. This unusual binding reverses the usual color scheme of the small corpus of similar known bindings, providing a sober yet striking cover for the book. “Around 1707 mosaic work ... began to be used in binding as it did in furniture and became the leading element in the design,.... These designs [were] now provided by onlay (as opposed to the sixteenth-century use of paint and wax)... Such mosaic work was either in a new form of the all-over semis (now incorporating a framed structure so that it often resembled a tessellated pavement and was sometimes termed à répétition), or with free-hand floral or other asymmetric realistic work” (Barber, Rothschild Waddesdon Manor catalogue, p. 201). Tile-patterned mosaic bindings were usually used on small format books. Their invention is credited to the binder Antoine-Michel Padeloup, or Padeloup le jeune (1685-1758), who bound for the entourage of the Regent Philippe II d’Orléans (d. 1723). The height of the fashion for this style was probably the late 1720s and 1730s (Barber, p. 226). This style of decoration had the advantage of requiring little materiel. While “very labour-intensive, [the tile pattern style] requires only a few tools, all being common lines and curves (`gouges’) and hardly any `figure,’ that is, expensive, engraved tools. It would, as such, have suited under-capitalised, younger binders.... [But such designs] “clearly required careful planning and, doubtless, the preparation of a scaled plan based on both the exact size of the book and on the tools to be used” (loc. cit). The present binding contains only one tool on the outer covers, the small fleuron (Waddesdon catalogue, p. 384, fig. 11), and one roll, which was also apparently used only on doublures (Waddesdon catalogue I, p. 436, RBT 8). Other tessellated mosaic bindings in this style, all attributed to Padeloup, are known: five, of which three using the same tools, are described and illustrated in the Waddesdon catalogue; another was reproduced by Michon and in the Esmérian catalogue. Those bindings use black or dark mororcco lozenges (gold-tooled) on a citron or light brown morocco ground, with gold-tooled lattice-work, creating a luminous effect. In contrast to those bindings, here Padeloup reversed the color scheme: a black ground with restrained silver and blind tooling serves as background for the tile design of unadorned brown morocco lozenges. While visually striking, the effect, enhanced by the silver-bordered doublures, is one of restraint, no doubt intentional, to reflect the book’s Jansenist content. Barbier Anonymes IV: 814. Giles Barber, The James A. de Rothschild Bequest at Waddesdon Manor, The National Trust: Printed Books and Bookbindings, 2 vols. (2013); see nos. 90, 91, 92, 93 and 572. Cf. (xxiv), 529, [1 black]; (xiv), 522; (xxii), 436; (xiv), 552; (xx); 426 pp. Frontispiece portrait of de Anza, 53 illustrations, 10 maps (7 folding), index; offsetting to copyright page and dedication page, and pages 72-80, at the end has been laid in several pieces of paper as noted below, the typed letter from Bolton to Gantner was at one time stapled to a front fly-leaf with staples, now removed, but staple punctures affect the fly-leaf and a few leaves following. Full navy buckram, spine titled and decorated in gilt; bindings square and tight, some light rubbing and shelf-wear. INSCRIBED by H. E. Bolton to Mrs. Vallejo Gantner. SR524-001. Very Good. FIRST EDITION. "Juan Bautista de Anza was the foremost land explorer in Spanish California. With His expedition of 1774 he opened up the land route between the established settlement of Sonora and the new colonies of Alta California, and his expedition of 1776 brought overland the colonists who founded San Francisco. Anza's accomplishments were not well understood and hence not appreciated until Bolton assembled all the diaries, journals, and correspondence of Anza and his associates in this publication. Incidentally I agree with Bolton in his assertion that the Font long diary of the 1776 expedition contained herein is the greatest single diary of exploration in the history of Latin America." Phil Townsend Hanna in The Zamorano 80. Other volumes include: Vol. II: Opening a Land Route to California; Diaries of Anza, Díaz, Garcés, and Palóu. Frontispiece, 32 illustrations, index; text clean, unmarked, occasional light foxing, mostly to the margins. Vol. III: The San Francisco Colony; Diaries of Anza, Font, and Exarch, and Narratives by Palóu and Moraga. Frontispiece, 21 illustrations, index; text clean, unmarked, light scattered foxing. Vol. IV: Font's Complete Diary of the Second Anza Expedition. Frontispiece, 33 illustrations, folding map, index; text clean, unmarked. Small stamp on foot of front endpaper. Minor browning to pages due to age. Exterior in fair, interior in good condition. Isaac Abarbanel was a fifteenth and early sixteenth century Iberian Jewish scholar and political leader, exiled from Spain in 1492. Over the course of his career he worked for the governments of Portugal, Castile, Naples and Venice. He authored a massive biblical commentary as well as works on Jewish philosophy and theology. R. Moses Maimonides (Rambam) was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure, both during his lifetime and after his death, but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba, Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi, physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah, his only work not in Arabic, still carries canonical authority, particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community, as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj, Kitab al-Fara'I, a book on precepts, and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin, known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim, The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. Moses Israel Landau was an early 19th century Austrian printer, publisher, and lexicographer who established an important printing-press in Prague.

John Crowley (b. 1942) had "The Deep" as his first novel, but is best known for his seminal SF novel "Little, Big" - this work had such an impact on late 20th century fantasy literature that Clute & Grant used the phrase in their "Encyclopedia of Fantasy" as short-hand "to describe a relationship between an outer world and an inner world in which the latter is larger than the former" (ibid, pg. 238). This volume gathers together four of Crowley's short novels, one of which, "Great Work of Time", won the 1990 World Fantasy Award for best novella. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter blue cloth over paper-covered boards, the front board with a depiction of a bird sitting on a wire stamped in metallic blue, silver lettering on the spine, grey endpapers, double-spread title page, signed by John Crowley in black felt-tip on the title page, first printing (per Zempel) with "First Edition" on the copyright page; octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 1/2"), pagination: [i-x] [1-3] 4-227 [1, blank] [1, author bio]. In the publisher's jacket showing the price of $18.95, wrap-around dust jacket artwork, review blurbs on front flap, review blurbs for "Aegypt" on back flap . ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a very small spot on the cloth on the front board, else fine, the book still with some of that "tight", unread feel. Dust jacket also fine, clean, the colours deep and unfaded, free of edgewear. Overall a remarkable example, signed by the author. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
