Description
Chicago: F.J. Schulte & Company, 1889. First Edition. Quarto (25.5cm); brown cloth, with titling and pictorial elements stamped in gilt, black, and red on spine and front cover; floral-patterned endpapers; xv,16-698pp, with portrait frontispiece of the author and numerous illustrations throughout. As usual, pp.689-90 lacking from pagination. Spine ends pushed and a bit worn, corners bumped, with minute board exposure to lower corners; foxing to right edge of textblock, and a few preliminary and terminal leaves; old glue repairs to hinges, with a few partial splits to front hinge; only Very Good. Essential, if self-serving, account of the Haymarket massacre and subsequent trials, written by the Chicago police captain who served as the lead investigator in the months following the bombing. During the course of his investigation Schaack was dismissed from the force for fabricating evidence; this voluminous work was largely his attempt at self-vindication. Profusely illustrated and with a wealth of biographical material (not all of it reliable) on the principal figures involved. GLENN (Haymarket Bibliography) 449. 82691.
