Description
n.p.: , 1912. A Wonderful Original Beatrix Potter Pen & Ink Drawing Featuring Old Mr. Bouncer, Mr. Tod, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Hunca Munca POTTER, Beatrix, artist. A fine original pen and ink drawing depicting Old Mr. Bouncer (Benjamin Bunny's father), Mr. Tod, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Hunca Munca. Signed "Beatrix Potter/Dec 4th 1912". Size 3 7/8 x 5 3/8 inches; 99 x 137 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. Framed size 15 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches; 393 x 420 mm.). A charming and highly evocative original pen-and-ink drawing by Beatrix Potter, signed and dated "Dec 4th 1912," presenting a delightful gathering of some of her most memorable animal characters. Executed with Potter's characteristic economy of line and expressive delicacy, the composition centers on a finely observed rabbit - likely Old Mr. Bouncer - standing upright in a tailored coat, holding a walking stick, his posture conveying both dignity and gentle humor. To the right appears Jemima Puddle-Duck, rendered with soft, rounded contouring and subtle cross-hatching, while in the background the sly figure of Mr. Tod is lightly sketched, his upright stance and elongated form giving him an almost theatrical presence. At lower left, a small mouse - presumably Hunca Munca - stands attentively, drawn with minimal strokes yet full of personality. The sheet is further enhanced by Potter's neat inscription and signature, placed prominently at left, balancing the visual weight of the figures. The spacing between the characters suggests a spontaneous yet carefully judged arrangement, typical of Potter's informal presentation drawings, possibly executed for a friend or admirer. Overall, the drawing captures the essence of Potter's genius: a seamless blend of natural observation and anthropomorphic charm, achieved through confident, fluid line work. The date of 1912 places it within a mature period of her artistic output, when her style had reached its most assured and economical form. A particularly appealing and well-composed example of her original work, uniting four beloved characters in a single, lively vignette. The Tale of Mr. Tod, was published in October 1912. "Dear Mr. Warne, I am much obliged for the new books [finished copies of Mr. Tod]... Beatrix Potter. Oct 9.12" "The hills around Sawrey are the setting for this story, and we are told that in winter and early spring Mr. Tod 'might generally be found in an earth amongst the rocks at the top of Bull Banks, under Oatmeal Crag.' 'I think this story is amusing' wrote Beatrix Potter when sending the manuscript to Mr. Warne on November 18th 1911, it's principal defect is imitation of "Uncle Remus". It is no drawback for children, because they cannot read the negro dialect - I hardly think the publishers could object to it?" Helen Beatrix Heelis (née Potter; 1866-1943), commonly known as Beatrix Potter, was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist. She is best remembered for her beloved children's books featuring anthropomorphic animals, most notably The Tale of Peter Rabbit, her first commercially published work in 1902. Her stories, including The Tale of Two Bad Mice (1904), The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck (1908), The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907) and The Tale of Mr. Tod (1912), have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. A pioneering entrepreneur, Potter played a key role in character merchandising. In 1903, she patented a Peter Rabbit stuffed toy, making him the first fictional character to be officially licensed. Born into an upper-middle-class family, Potter was educated by governesses and had a largely solitary childhood. She kept a variety of pets and spent her holidays in the Lake District, where she developed a deep appreciation for the natural world, closely observing and painting its landscapes, flora, and fauna. Her meticulous studies and watercolors of fungi earned her recognition in the field of mycology. In her thirties, Potter self-published The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which became a tremendous success, prompting her to pursue a full-time career in writing and illustrating children's books. Over the years, she authored more than sixty books, including twenty-three children's tales that remain widely popular. In 1905, with earnings from her books and an inheritance from her aunt, Potter purchased Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a village in the Lake District. Over the following years, she acquired additional farms to protect the region's distinctive landscape. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis (1871-1945), a respected local solicitor from Hawkshead. A dedicated farmer, she became a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and was deeply committed to land conservation. Though she continued to write, illustrate, and design merchandise for her publisher, Warne, her responsibilities as a landowner and her declining eyesight eventually limited her creative work. Potter passed away from pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey, aged 77. She left almost all her property to the National Trust, playing a crucial role in preserving much of what is now the Lake District National Park. Her books continue to be translated into multiple languages and remain popular worldwide. Her stories have been adapted into films, songs, ballet, and animation, and her life has been depicted in The Tales of Beatrix Potter (TV Movie 1983) and Miss Potter with Renée Zellweger (2006).

WITH MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATIONS IN PORTUGUESE MENTIONING BRAZIL 8vo (14.4 x 9.6 cm), [180] ff., with 151 large woodcut illustrations of which 149 are of plants. Bound somewhat tightly in later vellum over boards, covers gilt-ruled, spine gilt with morocco title pieces, a.e.g. Some marginalia cropped at time of re-binding as well as 2 pages of manuscript annotations in Portuguese. Minor tear repaired at edge of title, just touching woodcut border; some minor soiling, but generally a fresh copy with dark strikes of the woodcuts. Rare, second Italian-language edition (first 1522) of the Herbarius latinus, important for the dissemination of botanical/medical knowledge in popular culture and particularly for the adoption of this originally German-printed Latin work for readers in the Veneto. The second section, with 96 chapters, includes information on laxatives, aromatics, fruits, seeds, gums and resins, salts, minerals goose-grease, cheese, honey, ivory, and much more. Anderson notes that this section probably contributed to the book's success: "It was concerned with the materials of medicine that were commonly available in the shops of apothecaries and spice merchants. Through the use of the Herbarius the average man could easily find what drugs to use and purchase them in most towns." According to Anderson, "the Herbarius sold as well in Italy, if not better. There its second section may have contributed to its success, for it was concerned with the materials of medicine that were commonly available in the shops of apothecaries and spice merchants. Through the use of the Herbarius the average man could easily find what drugs to use and purchase them in most towns. The second section has 96 chapters, though many of them are very brief. They deal with the following: laxatives; aromatics; fruits, seeds, and plants of garden and orchard; gums and resins; salts; minerals and stones; and a variety of animals and their products, such as goose-grease, cheese, honey, and ivory" (Anderson, Illustrated History of the Herbal, pp. 86-7). The last chapter (CLI) de Vino e Aceto is illustrated with a woodcut showing wine barels in a cellar. According to Hunt, the woodcut on the title-page showing Saints Cosmos and Damian appears here for the first time. Our copy has 2 full page and numerious marginal early 17th c. annotations in Portuguese, mentioning Brazil in one case and giving the date of 1630 in another. There are two mentions of experiments in planting and cultivating cotton and ginger, "brought from Brazil"--one of them dated 1643 (f. aa6 r and f. Y6 r). In 1577, the Portuguese prohibited the cultivation of ginger in Bahia due to their interests in the India trade. However, Bahian colonists ignored the law and continued to grow it, selling it in secret to the Dutch and the English, among others. The use of lead for treating bladder ulcers is also discussed (f. Y6 r). Most curious is a recipe for avoiding and curing hemorroids by "Father Manoel da Anunciao, Capuchino, in the year 1630". The recipe involves frying small frogs in oil (without salt) "until the oil stops making noise... Once they are fried, take them out of the oil and put the oil in a bottle and apply this liquid with your fingers on the bone and on the hemmorhoids and they will heal quickly" (f. Y6 v). * Hunt I.34; Mortimer I.228 (1520 Latin); Anderson, Illustrated History of the Herbal, pp. 86-7; Schwartz, Sovereignty and Society in Colonial Brazil, esp. pp. 158-9.

Paris: Librairie de l'Art Independant, 1891. Very Good+. Deluxe second edition, 12mo (6¼ x 4¼ in); number 180 of 125 copies on tinted paper numbered 66 to 190 and initialed "AW" by Gide in ink. Additionally signed and inscribed by the author to French writer and literary critic Edmond Jaloux (1878-19489), "en cordiale souvenir, Marseille fin Avril 1896" in ink on the half-title; rebound in yellow floral patterned moire silk, gilt-stamped spine, with the original publisher's wrappers preserved, bound in at front and rear. A wonderful association copy. [With] Four autograph letters signed, most likely to French poet Henri de Régnier, bound in: 1) Two pages opposite p. 24, in which Gide worries about a lack of response from Régnier regarding a future meeting; 2) Single page opposite p. 64, where he confirms a date and meeting place; 3) Single page at rear, discussing the organization of a casual, perhaps, "annual dinner of NRF [Nouvelle Revue Française] loyalists" perhaps planned in celebration of Régnier's appearance in Paris; 4) Single page, also at rear, confirming arrangements to meet a mutual friend, Gide inquiries about the friend's address; sizes vary. Edmond Jaloux was among the earliest literary critics to champion the works of 20th-century authors like Rilke, Proust, and Woolf. "Jaloux was virtually the first to recognize the importance of André Gide. When merely a lad of lycée age, Jaloux could already presage Gide's importance in the development of twentieth-century letters." (J. Kolbert, "Edmond Jaloux and His Contemporaries." The French Review, Vol. 21, No.4). Gide and Jaloux met in late April 1896, when the writer dropped in unannounced to the young man's Marseille apartment. The young critic described the entrance of Gide as if a meteor had landed in his room, dubbing the writer an "Olympian" figure. According to a letter from Jaloux to Gide dated May 16th, 1896, he received the present lot from Gide on the previous day. Jaloux thanks him profusely in this letter, and praises Les Cahiers to the highest, "I read [it] until dusk; the sky was gloomy and misty, and I was able to harmonize myself infinitely with this precious book […] Ah! dear Sir, how admirable and pure Cahiers d'André Walter is! Few books have moved me to this point, and it contains such revealing sentences that make one shiver as when listening to the loveliest of music." (See Correspondance: André Gide & Edmond Jaloux. Edited by Pierre Lachasse, 2004).

Description
[Washington, D.C.]: n.p., 1961. very good +.. Taken Veteran's Day, November 11, 1961, these images document Kennedy's first presidential visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The president was accompanied by Major General Paul A. Gavan, Commanding General of the Military District of Washington, as well as the VA administrator John S. Gleason, and military aides General Chester Clifton, Colonel Godfrey McHugh, Captain Tazewell Shepard, and National Commander of the Legion of Valor Thomas Stirling. These images document the president's participation in the Veterans Day ceremony, including laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and speaking to a crowd of more than 5,000 at the Memorial Amphitheater. This speech, perhaps a justification for the United States' increasing involvement in Vietnam, was a message of peace through war: "In the end, the only way to maintain the peace is to be prepared in the final extreme to fight for our country - and to mean it. As a nation, we have little capacity for deception. We can convince friend and foe alike that we are in earnest about the defense of freedom only if we are in earnest -- and I can assure the world that we are." Collection of sixteen gelatin silver prints and eight color photographs on heavy stock. Each measuring 10" x 8" approx. All curling at edges. Slight toning to black-and-white prints. Color prints mildly faded. Very good or better overall.

Description
octavo, six pages, some spotting, foxing, and wear to letter, else in good condition. American Woman in Bombay Excoriates English Gentlemen for their Treatment of Native Indians. Minnie Whitman, an American woman, living in Bombay with her husband, writes a friend in America with news from Bombay, she describes rioting between Muslim and Parsee citizens of Bombay – and then excoriates Englishmen for their treatment of the Indian inhabitants, whom she has tremendous respect for. 'Dear Mr. Hale, I was so sort of woebegone here in this horrible country that in a moment of homesickness I declared that nobody wrote to me & I wouldn't write first and I really hadn't really life enough to break the resolution But last week when your nice kind letter came … now I write you directly to thank you for your letter which I hope was only the first of many, and to tell you as well as I can something of our life here. … I have no doubt from the books that you have read you have a better idea caste and divisions of native life than five years residence here could give you. The India papers here are making great sport of Mr. Seward's book which calls a Parsee a Hindoo – To me it does not seem so strange a blunder as it does to natives or rather to the English here. I presume in hunting for some geographical name for the natives of Hindostan, he naturally thought of Hindoo & so used the word which here Is known only as referring to religion & there is no geographical name – unless it be Indian & that certainly refers to a larger tract of land than Hindostan. I thought I would be able to give some idea of customs here and for that purpose I have visited the native parts of the city, but with no avail I never seen such crowds in my life. Of an afternoon as you pass the side streets, broad or broader than Winter St it looks like a procession – the streets perfectly packed with human beings & every caste, every profession, every province, every little country has its separate & distinct - I mean by this that in former times they had. Now under English rule if the servant caste choose to wear the turban of a Brahmin, who can say no? - & many do – Perhaps you remember to have seen the picture of the converted Brahmin who has lately visited the States. Now, his turban was not a Bombay Brahmin turban but a Madras turban – totally different. … The Mussulmans & Parsees here have been having a riot lately & the English troops from Poona were called down to quell the disturbance & remained here some three or four weeks. It happened in this way – and it couldn't have happened under a better and wiser government, Some learned Parsee made a translation of Mahomed's life from Washington Irving and the Mahomedans chose to feel very much insulted. So they waited on the "Chief of Police" and demanded the suspension of the book and government who stands a little in fear of Mahomedans, suppressed it. Of course they weren't satisfied but presently assaulted the Parsees, broke open their temples, put out their fires attacked their houses & killed & wounded several Parsees – At a late hour the police arrived, but were perfectly inefficient. The Gov. a fine looking old gentleman who would be a good man to sit among "invited guests" & that sort of thing didn't know which way to turn and it took him several days to make up his mind. In the meantime there were outbreaks from time to time with more or less damage & more or less persons killed. After a while the troops were ordered out cannon placed near the native town& the troops from Poona sent for and all now seems peaceful tho' of course there must be a fire smouldering. There was no danger for Europeans or Hindoos and I pitied the poor Parsees who are a peace loving people. The English people as a rule hate Parsees & there is a great deal disagreeable about them … I have found out the reason of this dislike to Parsees is because in business the Parsees can compete with them and then there is not an English business house here that has not a Parsee clerk & finds it a necessity to have one. I tell you what I told an English gentleman the other day & he did not seem to relish it. "You call yourselves a Christian people and you call the natives heathen. You never misapplied words worse in your life, The English here as a rule are not Christians – are not followers of Christ and his precepts. They are in their treatment of natives, the verist heathen I ever saw, and these poor natives, worshipping idols and denying the name of Christ are more Christlike in their actions, more peaceable, more kind, more forgiving, than you & Heaven knows they are more tried than ever you were" and there is hardly a man here I always excepting the missionaries & my husband.) who wouldn't beat his servant for mislaying a coat or some such trivial thing & swear at him at table because he brought him a dish with too much pepper or too little salt. If you can take advantage of a native do so. Go to a native's house and accept his hospitality& they leave no stone unturned to entertain you& grumble at them all the time they are there & and after leaving say you never had so stupid a time in your life – never acknowledge courtesy from them in any way. If you are driving & some poor native destitute of clothes gets near your carriage, seize your whip and lash him as hard as you can. Do all these things and many more of the same sort and you will be recognized as an English gentleman. It makes my blood boil when I see these things as I daily do see them and I confess I delight in setting them out to Englishmen – My time is up & I haven't told you about our house, we have just moved and are pleasantly situated, Of course we live outdoors – that is doors & windows all open & the little sparrows fly through the house and are at home. They even build nests in the drawing rooms & are not afraid. My servants are without number and Bombay house keeping in some respects is easy but hardly satisfactory. You can't feel at home with us here for we are not at home ourselves & will be glad to see the last of India. Last night I went to church (T's all high church here & the missionaries preach in native tongues) and the minister preached of the Pharisee who was thankful that he was not as other men and much good he did me for we came away thankful that we were not educated as other men, thankful that we were born in a free & enlightened country and thankful that we were born into a good common sense religion… Minnie C. Whitman"

Description
Cincinnati: By the Author, 1912. First Edition. Good. Poster; 12 x 8; beige stock, printed in black and illustrated with a photograph; paper fragile and age-toned; upper two corners clipped; old, horizontal fold line with two thin, closed cuts to edges; residue from a brown paper strip to upper margin of verso; in good to very good condition. A missing poster for two small children from Cincinnati, it gave a detailed description of the two brothers, the time they were last seen (April 29, 1912), and the speculation that "Hungarians" might have picked them up. Hungarian-Slovak gypsies emigrated to the US in the late-19th century, primarily to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and New York. They would become well-known for making a living by playing music at cafes and restaurants and for being semi-permanently settled, unlike the other nomadic Romani groups in the country, including the Ludar, the Romanichal, the Black Dutch, etc. Despite that, the general perception of the gypsies' roaming lifestyle and strange and secretive culture gave way to widely-spreading antiziganism. An article in the Greenfield Republican from May 23, 1912, stated that, indeed, Hungarian gypsies had been suspected of kidnapping the boys, as the former had hurriedly left Cincinnati around the time of the disappearances, but ultimately, the children had been found by their father, drowned in a feed-box in a stable.

Very Good in Good dj
Description
New York: William Morrow and Company. Very Good in Good dj. 1957. First American Edition. Hardcover. [spine slightly turned, minor bumping to lower corners, a little dust-soiling to top of text block, tiny stain on fore-edge; jacket faded at spine, missing about 1.5" inches from bottom of spine, 2-inch split at lower front flap-fold, several other nicks and small tears]. "An exciting novel about an American newspaperman fighting for his 'big story' in the turbulence of Italian political intrigue," this was West's fourth published novel (the third under his own name). Also published in the U.K. under the title "The Big Story," it preceded his breakthrough best-seller "The Devil's Advocate" by a couple of years. The 1965 film adaptation, starring Robert Ryan and Stewart Granger, although it was a British film, used the American title. The book has been frequently reprinted in paperback under both its titles, but this edition is notably scarce. .
