Description
01/05/1844. An uncommon internal document in the Adams familyThomas Baker Johnson was the brother of Louisa Catherine Adams, the wife of John Quincy Adams. George Washington visited the Johnsons' home in February of 1798, when Joshua, father of Thomas, was serving as Superintendent of Stamps with the Treasury Department. Washington invited them to visit him at Mount Vernon, which they did in May of 1799, Catherine and Joshua accompanied Thomas. Thomas received a political appointment in 1808 as the deputy postmaster of New Orleans, and remained in that position until 1822 when he resigned due to health issues and returned to Washington. During his time in New Orleans, he reportedly set aside a small fortune for the time from his salary and other business activities. Upon his return to Washington, this was turned over to his nephew, Charles Francis Adams, to be invested. Interestingly, Charles is noted repeatedly as managing the financial affairs of a number of his family relations through the years. John Quincy Adams wrote Thomas’s will over a two night period of consultation, which Thomas signed in Washington on February 25, 1842. He died the next year.Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy and grandson of John Adams, played a key role in the Civil War. A month after the war started, in May 1861 he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to the crucial position of United States Ambassador to England, a position previously held by his grandfather. Charles Francis Adams proved to be an excellent choice for this position; his skills helped keep the British from backing the Confederacy during the Civil War thus helping to ensure a Union victory.Document signed, Washington, May 1, 1844, to his son Charles, and relating to the estate of Thomas Baker Johnson. “Received of Charles Francis Adams the sum of two hundred and fifty four dollars, being the balance in his hands of money belonging to the late Thomas Baker Johnson, Esq., deceased, up to the 14th of October 1843 the day of his decease.” He has signed “J.Q. Adams, executor of the will of Thomas B. Johnson.” At this time, John Quincy Adams was in the House of Representatives, leading the fight against slavery.

First edition of Beaumont's brilliant clinical investigation into the physiology of digestion. Beaumont (1785-1853), a United States Army surgeon, was the first to study the digestion and actions of the stomach in a living person. The patient received a near mortal gunshot wound to his abdomen and chest. He recuperated over a period of many months, sustaining a permanent fistula in the stomach wall through which Beaumont was able to undertake his study of the process of digestion. Beaumont began his observations in 1825 and they continued over the next eight years in which time his patient fully recovered. G&M, 989; Horblit, 10.

Description
London: William Pickering, 1834. SECOND EDITION. Second edition of the third treatise in the Bridgewater Treatise series, a group of works designed to explore the natural world within the framework of a divine design as first outlined by William Paley. Whewell writes here of his conviction that the more one studies the laws of nature the more convinced that person will be in the existence of God. Whewell (1794-1866) was a co-founder and president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, a fellow of the Royal Society, president of the Geological Society, and for many years Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. He wrote authoritatively on architecture, mechanics, mineralogy, moral philosophy, astronomy, political economy, and the philosophy of science. He coined the words anode, cathode, ion, and scientist. He also famously opposed the idea of evolution. He believed that science would not undermine religion, pointing out God’s design of both humans and the world of nature. Despite Darwin’s quote of Whewell (But with regard to the material world, we can at least go so far as this;—we can perceive that events are brought about, not by insulated interpositions of Divine power, exerted in each particular ease, but by the establishment of general laws”, p. 356) on the title page of his Origin of species, Whewell was adamantly opposed to the theory of evolution. Provenance: From the library of the Anglican priest W[illiam] A[ndrewes] Fearon, DD, MA (1841-1924). Fearon was educated at New College, Oxford, where he was a Fellow from 1864 to 1867. He was Archdeacon of Winchester from 1903 to 1920, Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Winchester from 1903 to 1915; and Canon of Winchester from 1906 until 1920. The bookplate indicates a gift from his library to the Bishop Lyttelton Library of Winchester.

Brown full leather, gilt titles and decorations, all edges gilt, silk moire endpapers, ribbon marker bound in. Introductions by Christopher Morley and A.S.W. Rosenbach. "Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount of St. Alban, KC (22 January 1561 – 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author. He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. Although his political career ended in disgrace, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific revolution. His dedication brought him into a rare historical group of scientists who were killed by their own experiments. His works established and popularized deductive methodologies for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method or simply, the scientific method. His demand for a planned procedure of investigating all things natural marked a new turn in the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, much of which still surrounds conceptions of proper methodology today. Bacon was knighted in 1603, created Baron Verulam in 1618, and Viscount St Alban in 1621; as he died without heirs both peerages became extinct upon his death.
