Description
Np. No binding. Very Good+. Collection of eight approximately 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white photos of jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan, generally very good+ or better, with photo agency stickers on verso, ca. 1950s. In an elaborate long gown. With photographer stamp on verso and printing notations. Duke Ellington, George Shearing, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstine. From a Carnegie Hall concert of 1/1/57. With stamps on back from a magazine file. - Vaughan and Eckstine singing into a microphone for MGM Records. With stamps on back from a magazine file. Vaughan with Jimmy Jones at piano and arranger Tadd Dameron. Photo was published in Metronome magazine, April 1950. Vaughan seated, singing. Printing notations on front with stamps on back from a magazine file. A close-up of Vaughan singing into a microphone, printed very dramatically in dark shades of black and gray. Two different shots of Vaughan (one of them double weight) with a matching dress and turban, singing from a score. Critic Gary Giddins described her as the "ageless voice of modern jazz -- of giddy postwar virtuosity, biting wit and fearless caprice". He concluded by saying that "No matter how closely we dissect the particulars of her talent... we must inevitably end up contemplating in silent awe the most phenomenal of her attributes, the one she was handed at birth, the voice that happens once in a lifetime, perhaps once in several lifetimes. Her voice had wings: luscious and tensile, disciplined and nuanced, it was as thick as cognac, yet soared off the beaten path like an instrumental solo... that her voice was a four-octave muscle of infinite flexibility made her disarming shtick all the more ironic."

Description
(No place, but Paris: Privately Printed, No date, but 1934). First edition of this collection of poems, the last poem in the book, "The River Flows", dated at the end "Paris, 1934". Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper (of the binding): "To Louise With love and gratitude / Solita December 1936." In addition, a small note is laid in that reads: "Louise dear - don't grieve & cry - It'll all be forgotten soon - so don't worry. Jamie." Statue in a Field consists of twenty-two poems, including the long sequence entitled "Frontispice" (sic) which consists of twelve sections and begins "I was a brown child." In literary circles, Solano is best known as the lover and secretary of Janet Flanner, the brilliant author of the "Letter from Paris" [1925-1940] and "Letter from France" [1944-1965] in the New Yorker. In the 1930s, Solano met and for a while became the secretary of the mystic G. I. Gurdjieff. She became an authority on Gurdjieff's philosophy and edited the works of Kathryn Hume on him. Among other followers of Gurdjieff were Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap, editors of the Little Review. It is possible that the person to whom Solano inscribed this copy of Statue in a Field was Louise Davidson, an actress and theater manager in Paris, who was also part of the Gurdjieff circle. Calf slightly scuffed, acidic paper somewhat browned as inevitable, otherwise a very good copy. Small 8vo, rebound in half-calf & marbled boards with original yellow front wrapper bound in. Calf slightly scuffed, acidic paper somewhat browned as inevitable, otherwise a very good copy.

First edition presumed; 6 3/4 x 4 1/2; pp. 3-22; stapled lithographed wraps; tiny nicks to tips of spine, else very minor wear; in very good to near fine condition. On the premise that in many recipes, in which eggs were used, the number of them could be reduced by replacing them with baking powder, the booklet was published as an advertisement for the Royal Baking Powder Company and cleverly listed recipes "the old way" and "the new way" next to each other, where the new way used Royal Baking Powder in place of all, or most eggs called for in the recipes.

Description
1895. Oblong booklet (8.9 x 16.2 cm.), 8 pages. Illustrated with photographs and engravings. Promotes the Mudge Patent Canner, a household canning processor that “does away with the stewing kettle” and is “the cheapest, most efficacious and economical system of putting up high-standard goods that has ever been invented.” The Boston Cooking School Magazine reviewed the device saying, “a great point in its favor is that, by the use of the canner, fruit or vegetables are not subjected to long cooking, and thus flavor, color and form are preserved. Another consideration is that, by this process, no dishes are required, as the fruit to be ‘put up’ is put at once into the jars…” Stapled in green wrappers. Fine. Unrecorded.
