Description
1943. (WORLD WAR II). Archive: Wake Island Raid maps, photographs and documents. [Near Wake Island]: Intelligence Center Pacific Ocean Areas, October 5-6, 1943. Sixteen maps, photographs and documents; maps range in size from 8 by 8 inches to 18 by 21-3/4 inches; photographs range from 6-1/4 by 8 inches to 18 by 9-1/4 inches. $9500.Superb archive of rarely seen map and photographs used in planning and documenting the October 5, 1943 raid on Wake Island, which was taken by the Japanese only weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack.Wake Island, a U.S. airbase located approximately 2200 miles west of Pearl Harbor, was captured by the Japanese in late December, 1941. The island remained under Japanese control until the garrison there surrendered on September 7, 1945. In October 1943, a U.S. task force conducted a two-day air raid on the island. The Japanese commander, Shigematsu Sakaibara, convinced the raid was the beginning of an attempt to retake the island, marched 98 American civilian prisoners of war to a remote corner of the island and executed them. (Following the war, Sakaibara was tried and executed for war crimes.) Of particular interest is a large map on thick stock, folded into quarters and reinforced with tape on the verso, bearing copious pencil annotations documenting the second day of air raids on the island, recording various points in the action from the initial takeoff from the carrier at ""0515"" through the squadron's departure around ""0745."" The pilot carefully draws the route of two bombing runs, the first against the runways on the main island of Wake, and the second targeting the barracks and ammunition storage on nearby Peale Island. The pilot noted the direction of anti-aircraft fire, positions of guns, as well as the wind and the general weather conditions: ""Cumulus @ 2500 strong vertical development… Squalls to and from island."" The pilot recorded damage sighted, including ""Red flame black smoke 0710"" coming from an underground storage area adjacent to Runway A. On his second run he observed ""Black smoke 0706-0715—still going strong at 0725"" near the barracks on adjacent Peale Island. The archive also features four large, highly detailed reconnaissance photographs of Wake island together with a large body of smaller maps, all used in the planning of the October raid. Also of interest is a mimeographed document titled ""U.S.S. Yorktown Air Department Plan of the Day, Tuesday, 5 October, 1943"" which details the schedule of the first day of operations beginning at ""0245"" and ending prior to sunset at ""1645,"" noting the planned launchings and landings of seven major sorties against Wake. Several of the items are stamped ""VT-5 Air Intelligence""; VT-5 was a torpedo bomber squadron stationed on the Yorktown during the war. All items apparently from the collection of Lt. H.T. Reynolds of torpedo bomber Squadron VT-5, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown. One of the photographs, of an Avenger in flight over Wake Island, is captioned ""Lt. Reynolds, U.S.S. Yorktown, 1943.""Typical folds and other wear consistent with use, though generally very well preserved, in excellent condition overall. A superb collection of original materials used in the planning and subsequent reports on this historic attack.

Description
11/03/1829. Jones, as famed Captain and Commodore, also concluded a treaty with the king of Hawaii, and defended San Francisco during the Gold RushThomas ap Catesby Jones was one of the most controversial officers in the U.S. Navy during the first half of the nineteenth century. He served from 1805 until 1858. A fascinating representative of a period of tumultuous change for both the Navy and the country, he was a firebrand with a desire for reform and willingness to experiment. He was also a friend of Andrew Jackson, both before, during and after his presidency.Jones saw his first active service as a gunboat commander assigned to the New Orleans station from 1808 to 1815. Fourteen months after entering the service he had his own boat. He was only nineteen then, and the youngest man aboard. The first years were spent in the suppression of piracy and smuggling on the Gulf Coast, and he was so active that it is said that the arch pirate Jean Lafitte offered him $10,000 to leave those waters. After the outbreak of the War of 1812, Commodore Dan Patterson decided to break up the nest of pirates at Barataria. Lieutenant Jones was his second in command by this time, and led the gunboats into action when the attack was made. After the successful conclusion of the affair he was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry.Jones received honors for bravery at the 1814 Battle of Lake Borgne in Louisiana, where he succeeded in delaying the British advance prior to the Battle of New Orleans. When the British attackers arrived, Jones was stationed inside Ship Island, at the entrance of Lake Borgne, with only five gunboats. On the approach of a British force in barges, he withdrew to the more defensible Malheureux Island Passage, and there, outnumbered about six to one, he fought the battle of Lake Borgne. Before he was overwhelmed, he so battered the attacking force that British general Pakenham did not land his army for another week. Thus he and Commodore Dan Patterson were partly responsible for the presence of Jackson’s army at New Orleans in time to meet Pakenham, and only the sacrifice of the naval force to delay the British advance made the successful defense of the city possible. In this sacrifice Patterson was the directing force and Jones his chief instrument.Jones then spent a year in the Mediterranean learning deep-water seamanship and serving as first lieutenant of the Constellation. This was followed by a Pacific cruise in command of the Peacock, notable for the conclusion of the first trade agreements with several South Sea Island chiefs, and one with the king of Hawaii. Then came promotion to the rank of captain while serving as chief ordnance officer of the navy. In 1836 he raised his commodore’s broad pennant over the Macedonian as commander of the South Seas Exploring Expedition which later sailed under the command of Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. From 1841 to 1844, Jones commanded the United States Pacific Squadron, and again from 1848 to 1850. The most important event was his premature capture of Monterey, which almost precipitated the inevitable war with Mexico in 1842.While lying at Callao, Commodore Jones heard a rumor that Mexico was at war with the United States and had ceded California to Great Britain. At the same time the British flagship Dublin slipped her cables immediately after the arrival of the mail steamer and sailed northward under sealed orders. The American commander immediately decided to forestall the British and sailed for Monterey. The taking of the city led to a huge clamor in Mexico. Jones was later recalled to still the anger in Mexico City, but was never censured for his action. In fact, he received a private letter of commendation from the Secretary of the Navy, John Y. Mason. When the Mexican War was nearly over Commodore Jones was again given command of the Pacific squadron; it was his last command. Too late for action against Mexico, he arrived at California in time for the Gold Rush. During those chaotic days, Jones provided a U.S. Navy presence in the San Francisco area. Thomas ap Catesby Jones was an outstanding example of the type of officer produced by the navy of his day, a strong character who stood out in a service full of strong characters.Document signed, with engravings of an eagle, flags and cannons, Washington, March 11, 1829, naming Jones a captain. “I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him a Captan in the Navy.” This is one of the most significant military appointments we have ever carried.

Description
Venice: in aedibus Ioannis Tacuini Tridinensis, 1525. [Bede, the Venerable (672/73 - 735).] De computo, vel loquela per gestum digitorum [and] De ratione unciarum. In Hoc in volumine haec continentur M. Val. Probus de notis Roma. ex codice manuscript castigatior . . . , ed. Giovanni Tacuino (Venice: G. Tacuino, 1525), ff. LV - LVII. Whole volume, 4to. [4], LXXIX [i.e., LXXXI], [1]ff. Title in red and black. Full-page woodcut of a sibyl within an architectural setting, signed "b. M." in the block (probably Benedetto Montagna), a few woodcut initials. 211 x 153 mm. Modern vellum. Fine. Probably the Earliest Printings of Bede's accounts of finger-reckoning and duodecimal fractions. Bede's "De computo, vel loquela per gestum digitorum" (On calculating and speaking with the fingers) and "De ratione unciarum" (On calculating duodecimal fractions) form part of the introduction to his treatise De temporum ratione (On the reckoning of time), written around 725 A.D. The editio princeps of De temporum ratione was published by Sichardus in 1529, four years after the present work. Portions of De temporum ratione appeared in print as early as 1505, but these do not appear to have included the section on finger-reckoning. Smith, in his Rara arithmetica, states that the 1522 edition of Johannes Aventinus's Abacus atque vetustissima, veterum latinorum per digitos manusque numerandi contains a description of Bede's finger-reckoning; however, we think this may be an error, since we have not been able to find any record of this edition in OCLC or the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalogue. Smith himself described only the 1532 edition of Aventinus's work (see Rara arithmetica, pp. 136-138). Bede's two disquisitions are contained in a collection of works on Latin abbreviations, symbols, weights, measures and inscriptions edited by Giovanni Tacuino. The collection is devoted primarily to works on deciphering the abbreviations used in classical-era stone or bronze inscriptions, a subject of great interest to humanistic scholars eager to discover more about the ancient world. Included in the collection is the editio princeps of Petrus Diaconus' De notus literarum more Romano liber (which Tacuino had discovered), along with a new edition of M. Valerius Probus' De notus Romanorum and several transcriptions of Roman inscriptions in quasi-facsimile. The typographic design of the title is reminiscent of an ancient text in stone. Finger-reckoning, a method of computation in which numbers are represented by finger and hand gestures, had been practiced since ancient times and was commonly used during the Middle Ages; however, there are very few written accounts of the technique dating from these times, probably because it was used primarily by "common or illiterate people" (Menninger, p. 201) who passed its methods on orally. Bede's account of the practice, although not the first, was the best and most influential. His purpose was to provide a useful method for calculating the Christian calendar, most importantly the date of Easter and other movable feasts. Bede listed finger- and hand symbols for the numerals 1 through 9999; these "roughly work like a placement system. The middle, ring, and little fingers of the left hand denote the digits; the thumb and index fingers on the left hand express the tens; the thumb and index finger on the right hand the hundreds; and the middle, ring and little fingers the thousands . . . The informal manner in which Bede explains how to flex the fingers and form gestures seems to retain traces of oral instruction" (Kusukawa, pp. 28-29). Prior to Europe's adoption of Arabic numerals, finger-reckoning provided a rudimentary method of place-value calculation. "Neither Bede nor any of his contemporaries in Western Europe knew about place value or zero, but finger reckoning enabled them to proceed as if they did. Finger joints supplied place value-one joint 10s, another 100s and so on-and zero was indicated by the normal relaxed position of the fingers-by nothing, so to speak. The system was even capable of simple computation" (Crosby, The Measure of Reality: Quantification in Western Europe, 1250-1600, p. 42). Bede's explanation of the Roman system of duodecimal fractions, which follows the description of finger-reckoning, clarifies the terminology and provides a list of synonyms for different types of fractions. Kusukawa, "A manual computer for reckoning time," in Sherman, Writing on Hands: Memory and Knowledge in Early Modern Europe, pp. 28-34. Description
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First edition. First issue with the 'eight-line errata' (following all but a very few of the points in Smith), in book form of Dickens' seventh novel, bound from the original monthly parts, with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm). xvi, [1, errata], [1, blank], 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece, titlepage, and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz") including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road", facing p. 547. Some of the plates with light foxing, mainly marginal, otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example. Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint, head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired, spine slightly faded. An excellent example, far better than is usually seen, of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth. Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial career-concerns about family duty, class position, child welfare, and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company, he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization, and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise (and its perils) is the railroad. In chapter six, Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." Dombey and Son grapples with the effects of industrialization, and the railroad is one of the novel's symbols for this momentous era. The book first "appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, the last forming a double number, from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12, 1848. at 21s. Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate, which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road," p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" (Smith). Smith I:8. Sadleir, 687. Wolff, 1798.

This is one of the copies without the leaflet with a supplementary poem pasted on leaf F1r (basically, beside this copy, only two of the five known copies have this addition). On the title page ownership's inscriptions "Conventus S. Wenceslai Egrensis" and "Ex libris Joannis Sedleckij". Contemporary limp vellum (soiled), ties, new endpapers, some light damp stains throughout, but a good copy. FIRST EDITION. Soon after the death of the humanist and poet Konrad Celtes in 1508, the Collegium Poetarum, which was called into being by him in Vienna and which had the right of conferring the laureateship, came to an end. Efforts were made in the middle of the century to restore the Collegium, especially by some influential imperial councillors such as Jacob Jonas, Georg Sigmund Seld, Sigmund von Herberstein and Georg Eder. It was finally re-established in 1558 under the head of Nathanael Balsmannus, a member of the Collegium Archiducale. The first important publication of the new Collegium Poetarumwas printed on the occasion of the coronation of Ferdinand as emperor in Frankfurt. His son Maximilian organized him a pompous reception at Vienna, followed by various festivities. A deputation of the university met the newly created emperor on sumptuously decorated ships on the Danube near Klosterneuburg and welcomed him with poetical eulogies. The emperor was then escorted to Vienna and enthusiastically welcomed in the cathedral of St. Stephen by the inhabitants of Vienna. The following festivities also included the coronation of several poets, e.g. Hieronymus Lauterbach from Bohemia and Vitus Jacobaeus from Nuremberg. Not only verses from both the newly created poets laureate are included in this volume, but also from numerous professors from various faculties of the university such as Georg Mitkreuz Petrus a Rotis, Bartholomäus Reisacher, Paul Fabricius, Johannes Sambucus, Johannes Heber, etc. (cf. J. v. Georg Eder was born in Freising (Bavaria) and studied at Cologne and later law at Vienna, where he held for several times the position of rector of the university and of the dean of the faculty of law. He also became a member of the imperial court of justice. His repeated sharp attacks on the fundamental principles of Lutheranism created some stir even in circles of the imperial court for its harsh language and caused him the prohibition to publish works on religious matter. His most important work, however, remains the first history of the University of Vienna (1559) (cf. K. Mühlberger, Bildung und Wissenschaft. Kaiser Maximilian und die Universität Wien, in: "Kaiser Maximilian II: Kultur und Politik im 16. Jahrhundert", F. Edelmayer, ed., Wien, 1992, pp. 224-226).
