Description
In this long and substantive letter written from Hollywood to his wife, Patchen writes about an offer by composer Harry Geller (1913-2008) to compose a libretto for an opera Geller would write. Patchen shares the assurances he received about Geller with his wife. Patchen writes that working with Geller could be a "real break" for them. He fills the letter with news of his work, rain that would drive crowds from his readings, "bkstore imprints" and "Doris Duke" who hadn't seen the "letter sent to Foundation...." A fine information laden letter from husband to wife.. Simply signed, "Kenneth." With full signature in the form of the addressee, "Mrs. Kenneth Patchen.

Description
Guadalajara: Imprenta de D. Mariano Rodriguez, 1821. Very good plus.. 37 [i.e.,27] pp. Disbound. Edges painted red. Scattered, light foxing at fore-edge margin. Scarce Guadalajara imprint that comprises the statutes of the recently founded Sociedad Patriotica de Nueva Galicia, which was intended to promote agriculture, arts, and sciences in Jalisco. The first three articles of the statues outline the interests of the society, which also extended into other areas such as public education, mining, and industry; define the different levels of membership, and their obligations; and set out the requirements for admission. Many of the remaining articles enumerate the duties of various club officers, but the last several discuss the makeup and purpose of several committees, prizes and other remunerations granted by the society, and various ceremonies specific to the club. (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in), covers with multiple straight and decorative rules, decorative cornerpieces, raised bands, compartments with central floral motif surrounded by foliate frame and double rules, gilt lettering, gilt ruled turn-ins, light blue watered silk pastedowns and endleaves, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. SIGNED by Markle on the limitations page, with an inscription (probably in a secretarial hand): To Karrick M. Castle / With my compliments. Spine very lightly sunned, hint of rubbing to corners, but in very fine condition inside and out. This is a finely printed and beautifully bound biography of John Markle (1858-1953), one of the nation's most accomplished and affluent engineers and coal mining executives. His chief feat of engineering was the building of the Jeddo Tunnel in Pennsylvania, a drainage tunnel that expels mine water through five miles of solid rock. Under the influence of his friend J. P. Morgan, Markle became a prominent philanthropist, giving away more than $17 million to worthy causes through the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation. During the period from the retirement of William Matthews to the establishment of the Club Bindery, there was no better binder in America than Henry Stikeman, who exhibited "extraordinary skill . . . in design, inlaying, and tooling." (Maser Collection) Stikeman's firm did high-end publisher's bindings as "bread and butter" work, and luxurious gilt-tooled bindings for collectors..

Description
Chicago: Poole Bros., Inc., 1929. First Edition. Good. Large, die-cut brochure; 8 x 17 1/2; pp. 2-18; brick-red wraps, decorated with a vignette in black and gold; illustrated with numerous gilded and tinted drawings and photographs, including a fold-out diagram at the end; a few small punctures to edges from removed staples (minor loss of paper to top edge of first leaf); tissue guard at the beginning detached, but present; very-thin, silk strip between pages 2 and 3; in good to very good condition. A stunning piece, it was created by noted artist and graphic designer Lewis Rothe (1874 - 1951) as an advertisement for Asama Maru - a Japanese ocean liner, built in 1927 - 1929 by Mitsubishi for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha shipping company's luxury high-speed trans-Pacific Orient-California (Los Angeles and San Francisco) service. It could provide accomodations for 222 first-class passengers, 96 second-class passengers, and 504 third-class passengers. Leading quite the interesting life, the liner would transport the Japanese Olympic team to Los Angeles for the 1932 Summer Olympics, would carry Hellen Keller in 1937 with a message of good will from President Roosevelt, would be grounded by the Great Hong Kong Typhoon that same year, and would be intercepted and boarded by an armed party from the Royal Navy Light Cruiser HMS Liverpool in 1940. The current brochure was composed of a series of overlaping deck outlines, from Rothe's rendering of the vessel, revealing a progressive cutaway view of the ship. As each die-cut leaf was lifted, showing that particular deck, a description of the area, the accomodations, the amenities, etc. was revealed (the pool, the Great Smoking Room, the Library, the first-class cabins). The large, fold-out diagram at the end showcased a plan of the entire passenger accomodation. The last page contained an exhaustive list of agents and correspondents at principal ports of call and shipping centers.

Description
Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2006. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 6x0x9. First edition - a paperback original. An excellent copy. 2006 Trade Paperback. 277 pp. John Calvin has been the subject of numerous studies, but most have focused on one aspect of his thought or a limited selection of his writings. This study of Calvin adopts a uniquely holistic approach. Randall Zachman begins with a brief biography and considers Calvin's own understanding of his ministry as a teacher and pastor. From this perspective, he surveys Calvin's writings and their place in the work of reforming the church both through the training of clergy and the instruction of the laity. Zachman then considers Calvin as a theologian. In contrast to Martin Luther, Calvin sought to balance the verbal proclamation of the Word with an emphasis on the visible manifestation of God both in creation and in Christ. This study will be of great interest to Reformed clergy and to students of the Reformation and Calvinism.
