About very good.
Description
Puebla: Imprenta Liberal de Moreno Hermanos, 1822. About very good.. Forty-one issues plus three supplements, 372pp. Minor, scattered worming, slightly affecting text. Scattered light dampstaining and faint foxing. Untrimmed. A complete run of this early and significant periodical, a "lantern" for the Mexican people, which began publication in Puebla just one month after the achievement of independence. The editor, Ignacio Mariano de Vasconcelos, was close to the monarchical project of Agustin Iturbide. The announced purpose of the paper was to explain the principals of the new constitution and laws of the country, support the cause of constitutional monarchy, and to warn about the dangers of a free press and more liberal revolutionary aspirations. El Farol combines political editorials, moral and religious reflections, national and international news, and literary sections. Each issue included doctrinal articles defending and promoting the concept of constitutional monarchy and emphasizing Catholicism as the foundation for moral and social order. The paper also contains relevant documents of contemporary events, such as communications from Iturbide to the army and missives from the provincial council of Puebla to the Constituent Congress. Its conservative and Catholic viewpoint made it a counterweight to more liberal publications of the time, and reflected the tensions during nascent Mexican independence between monarchists and republicans, and between defenders of religion as part of the backbone of the state and those seeking a more secular and liberal form of government. In all, an invaluable source to understand the political and social debate during the first months of Mexican independence. Rare institutionally and in commerce. Andrade 3747. Garritz 4573. Sabin 23875.

Description
[Tule Lake: June 3, 1978. Very good.. Small panoramic photographic, measuring 7 x 13.5 inches. Minor fading and toning. A panoramic group portrait of participants in the 1978 Tule Lake Pilgrimage, an early effort to commemorate the experiences of Japanese-Americans in the internments camps during World War II. The photo depicts well over 100 people sitting and standing in informal rows on a hill at the camp site in Northeastern California. The caption title at the lower edge of the image, "Tule Lake Pilgrimage, June 3, 1978," is given in both Japanese and English. "Organized visits back to former World War II concentration camps sites that were started largely by Sansei in the late 1960s have evolved to include participation from all communities confronting civil rights violations. The first organized pilgrimages occurred in Southern and Northern California in 1969 with trips to Manzanar and Tule Lake , both of which included an inter-generational mix of Issei, Nisei, Sansei, and Yonsei.... The Tule Lake Committee organized pilgrimages in 1978, 1979 and 1980. However, pilgrimages during the 1980s became infrequent when pilgrimage organizers, largely made up of students, focused their energy on the redress movement." -- Densho Encyclopedia.

Description
[Chicago], 1943. Very good.. 112pp. Original printed red wrappers, stapled. Light wear at corners and along spine. Even toning internally. The 1943 issue of an irregularly-published almanac aimed at uplifting the African-American community. The author, Rev. Ross D. Brown, writes rather defiantly about a host of issues important to the Black community, such as white supremacy, the issue of authority, the census, "Negro Blood," interracial marriage laws, and much more. He also includes a healthy number of biographical profiles of notable African-American people throughout history, with sections on "Prominent People of African Descent from A to Z," "Negro Inventors and Their Patents," "Seven Famous Members of Congress," "Celebrated Negroes Who Are Said to Have Married White Women", and more, with individual sections on people such as Joe Louis, Satchel Paige, Thomas Fuller, and others. One of the more powerful sections is titled, "Things They Don't Want Us to Know," which includes numerous little-known facts about the contributions of African Americans.

Description
8vo. 50 pp. Paper covers with full page design in the style of Arts & Crafts to front cover and smaller centered Arts & Crafts style design to back. A bit of darkening to one corner of front cover. 2 advertising catalogues in one; front about Columbia bicycles and back about Hartford bicycles together with their prices. The Arts & Crafts influence on Will Bradley is apparent in the designs for this catalogue. In addition to heavy black ink against white backgrounds, the title page and page facing it are an integrated whole, and red ink is used as an accent. Borders are filled with floral designs much employed in the Arts & Crafts manner. The catalogue contains many photographs of Bradley drawings. Will Bradley was one of America's greatest graphic artists, though mostly associated with Art Nouveau, oftentimes exhibiting Aubrey Beardsley tendencies. Bradley, however, evolved as an artist to reflect changing societal fashion. Although the first major Arts & Crafts exhibition in America was held in April 1897 at Boston's Copley Hall, Bradley was interested in it long before. He was a founding member of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts. In 1896, Bradley wrote and published a eulogy for William Morris. An extremely rare catalogue featuring both Arts & Crafts and Will Bradley, America's greatest graphic artist.

With its austere production and design (by Bernstein's wife Susan Laufer/Bee), in many ways the clearest expression of the aesthetic and the moment the movement fully matured.
