Description
London, 1870. First edition. Original watercolor (8 x 9 in.), sympathetically matted and framed. One of six watercolor designs for Diamonds and Toads (Frederick Warne & Co., 1871), a children's toy book in the Aunt Louisa's Toy Books series. This fantastically vivid and full watercolor drawing from early in Greenaway's career depicts a young woman holding in her right hand a large tankard and looking horrified as two huge frogs and two snakes jump and slither out of her mouth. At the left is an old woman, who, in the story, has cursed the girl to drop snakes from her mouth when she speaks. Greenaway used her sister, Fanny, as a model for the young woman in the illustration. Kate Greenaway (1824 - 1901) was commissioned to illustrate Diamonds and Toads, an entry in the Aunt Louisa's Toy Books series, in 1869. The toy book incorporates six of her illustrations: an "ambitious project" that took her over a year. She earned her "£36 from the color printer, Kronheim, for her watercolor designs" for the book (Engen). It was her first illustrated book and marked the beginning of a long and prolific career as one of the most beloved children's illustrators of the nineteenth century. Diamonds and Toads was first published by Charles Perrault, who initially titled the story "Les Fées" ("The Fairies"). It was also eventually included in Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book (1889). See Spielmann & Layard, pp. 49, 285.

Description
London: Printed for and Published by the Rev. J[ohn] Trusler, 1790/ First and only edition, a moral work by an author who is credited with publishing the first thesaurus to the English language (The Difference Between Words Esteemed Synonymous, 1766). Later nineteenth-century mottled tan calf, boards ruled in gilt, gilt spine in six compartments, each with a repeating floral design, red gilt-lettered leather label. Edges stained yellow, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins. . Sixteenmo. Fifty woodcuts, including vignette title-page, by John Bewick. Binding extremities a bit rubbed with two small chips to crown of spine. Light foxing, the occasional small stain. Very minor closed tear to pp. 195-196, not affecting legibility. Faded contemporary ink inscription on p. 196. Bookplate on front flyleaf, bookseller's ticket on lower front pastedown, and small book label of children's book collector and librarian Albert A. Howard on rear pastedown, all twentieth-century. A very good copy. John Trusler (1735-1820) was a Church of England clergyman author, and printer, educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was a compiler of others' works, the most famous of which was a "methodised and digested" version of Lord Chesterfield's Letters to His Son (1774), published as Principles of Politeness (1775).

Printed wrappers, stitched; binding square and tight, wrappers with a variety of wear, like a bumped top corner, but still a nice exemplar of a scarce item. Pencil notation in the gutter at the last page of the text block reads: "1948 gift of the printer." SCARCE. BMR423-001. Good. FIRST EDITION, thus. Sung to the tune Star Spangled Banner. This poem was printed contemporarily as a broadside in San Francisco a couple of times. Elizabeth Wills was from an old New England family; she spent her childhood in Louisiana and New Hampshire. SCARCE: only one copy found for a comparable price, John Howell books offered one for $100 in 1979; that offer included a broadside printed by the San Francisco Picayune Print in 1850. Description
From the Fayer studio in Vienna. Ca. 140 x 90 mm. In German (with translation). Slightly worn. "Although best known early in her career for Mozart, [Jurinac] built up an extensive repertory covering a wide range of parts. She appeared at most of the world's leading opera houses, maturing from roles such as Cherubino, Octavian, Marzelline and Ilia (Idomeneo) to the Countess, the Marschallin, Leonore and Electra. Among her other notable roles were the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), the two ladies in Don Giovanni, Elisabeth (Tannhäuser and Don Carlos), Jenůfa, Cio-Cio-San and Tosca, Desdemona, and later Marie (Wozzeck), Poppaea and Iphigenia (Iphigénie en Tauride). Jurinac's voice was beautifully pure, rich and even throughout its range, and although she did not always sound to best advantage in her numerous recordings, the finest of them faithfully convey the integrity, eloquence and commitment that made an unforgettable impression on two generations of opera-lovers. The ardent, youthful singer of the 1940s and 50s grew into the sensitive, reflective artist of the 60s and 70s. Although she appeared frequently as a concert and lieder singer, she will be remembered as one of the outstanding operatic sopranos of her time, generous of voice and radiant of personality. This is reflected in her recordings of Ilia, Marzelline, Leonore and Octavian." Peter Branscombe in Grove Music Online.
