Description
London: Tinsley Brothers. 18, Catherine Street, Strand, 1869. First Edition. 3 vols., 8vo (202 x 143mm), vi, 292, [2]; vi, 278, [2]; vi, 268, [4] Publisher’s dark green decorative cloth stamped in blind, gilt spines. Publisher’s advertisements at the back of all volumes. Light rubbing to the spine ends, some scattered foxing at the front of each volume, volume one spine gently cocked, else a bright, near fine set. Originally serialized in the Dublin University Magazine, a very scarce and uncommonly well-preserved set of this novel by J. Sheridan's eldest daughter. OCLC locates only 5 copies. Loeber, A Guide to Irish Fiction 1650-1900. Eleanor Frances Le Fanu (1845–1903) was the eldest child of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873), the Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels now regarded as among the foremost ghost story writers of the Victorian era, whose major works include Uncle Silas (1864) and the novella Carmilla (1872). Writing under the pseudonym Russell Gray, Eleanor published three novels in quick succession: Never--For Ever (1867), John Haller's Niece (1868), and Up and Down the World (1869). The Le Fanu family was of Huguenot descent and deeply embedded in Irish literary life; Eleanor's great-great-uncle was the dramatist Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and her cousin Rhoda Broughton became a successful novelist in her own right. All three of Eleanor's novels are scarce, and very little critical attention has been directed toward her work, which remains largely overshadowed by her father's considerable reputation.

Berlin and Vienna: Urban & Schwarzenberg, 1944. First Edition. Offprint, 8vo (241 × 171mm), pp. 12. Sonderabdruck from the journal of the Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Lichtforschung. Self-wrappers, staple-bound, soft crease, light toning, publisher's paper reinforcement to the spine with some staple rust, else near fine. Signed by Hahn on the front wrapper. A survey lecture delivered at Bremen on October 21, 1940 and at Jena on June 25, 1942, in which Hahn, as director of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Chemie in Berlin-Dahlem, reviews the state of artificial nuclear transmutation and heavy nucleus fission for a medical-scientific audience. The paper covers the principal modes of artificial atomic transformation (alpha-particle bombardment, proton and neutron irradiation, and beta-decay chains) and their products, including artificially radioactive isotopes and their applications as tracers and indicators in chemistry and biology. The second half addresses nuclear fission directly, summarizing the experimental evidence for the splitting of uranium and thorium nuclei under neutron bombardment, the range of fission products identified across the periodic table, and the role of secondary neutrons in sustaining the chain reaction. Written and delivered before the public announcement of the atomic bomb, the paper reflects Hahn's position at the center of the discovery he had made with Strassmann in December 1938, presenting its implications within the framework of academic science while the military applications of that same discovery were being pursued elsewhere.

Williams (1814-1896) served in the State legislature of Maine as both a Senator and House Representative, and he was also Governor of Maine for one year. Williams was a relative of the author of this work, Horatio Bridge (1806-1893). Bridge, a U.S. Navy officer, served aboard the sloop-of-war USS Saratoga off the west coast of Africa from 1843-1844. The USS Saratoga was stationed there to protect American citizens and suppress the slave trade. According to correspondence, Bridge's roommate at Bowdoin College, Nathaniel Hawthorne, allegedly inspired Bridge to keep a journal of his travels, which Hawthorne helped edit and compile into the Journal of an African Cruiser.

Twentieth Century Fox. No binding. About Fine. [Los Angeles]: Twentieth Century Fox, 1954. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin print photo. Creases at bottom left corner, film credits on bottom blank white margin, overall about fine. Once her star had risen, Twentieth Century Fox gave Marilyn Monroe some of the best directors in the business to work with. They also gave her some fine scripts in several genres, and her portfolio of work is outstanding. Her movies made money, too! River of No Return is a Western saga with songs and in Technicolor, directed by Otto Preminger and filmed on location. As saloon singer Kay Weston, Monroe donned several period-ish showgirl costumes, posing for publicity in this costume designed for her by Charles LeMaire. It could be seen briefly in the film during a scene in her dressing room.

Description
1950. Vernacular photograph archive of a staged wedding ceremony, circa 1950s, documents gender nonconforming performance and queer social ritual at a time when same-sex relationships and gender variance were largely excluded from public recognition and subject to legal and social restriction. The images depict participants adopting bridal and ceremonial roles across gender lines, presenting a constructed wedding scene that engages directly with institutional marriage while subverting its normative structure. Visual evidence of cross-dressed participants in roles of bride, officiant, and attendants situates the archive within mid-twentieth-century queer social practice, where performance, costume, and private gatherings provided space for expression outside formal legal frameworks. The photographs offer direct documentation of how marriage symbolism was appropriated and reinterpreted within queer communities prior to later movements for legal recognition. United States, circa 1950s. Archive of three original black and white silver gelatin photographs, each measuring approximately 10 x 8.5 inches. One photograph shows a participant dressed as a bride in a semi-sheer white gown with ribbon decoration and lace floral veil, while the officiant appears in formal attire including a long dark dress, fur stole, lace veil, and sheer hosiery. A second photograph depicts attendants dressed as bridesmaids in patterned dresses with coordinated accessories including lipstick and fur stoles. A third image includes a table arranged with gloves, scarves, and brassieres, suggesting preparation and costuming associated with the event. Composition across the images emphasizes dress, gesture, and ceremonial staging. Produced during a period when queer identities were primarily expressed in private or semi-private settings, these photographs align with a broader history of performance and social gathering as forms of community formation and resistance. The use of wedding imagery and attire reflects both the cultural centrality of marriage and its inaccessibility to same-sex couples during the mid-twentieth century, highlighting the role of parody, adaptation, and ritual in queer life. As visual documentation, the archive contributes to the study of gender expression, costume, and social practice within LGBTQ+ history prior to the expansion of public rights movements in the later twentieth century. Light handling wear; overall very good condition.

Description
New York: [New York Protestant Episcopal Press], 1829. Very good.. Broadside, 10.5 x 9 inches. Old folds, foxing, creasing, and toning, with substantial but irregularly-trimmed margins. An unrecorded New York broadside advertising the opening of the New York Protestant Episcopal Press (NYPEP) and related activities at No. 46 Lumber Street in New York City in 1829. The text states that "PRINTING of every description will be executed for Churches, Bible and Common Prayer-Book Societies, Tract Societies, Missionary or Education Societies, and all other religious institutions of the Protestant Episcopal Church, at the lowest rates, and in the best manner" and that the new establishment will "also be the publication office of The Family Visiter and Sunday School Magazine; and of The Children's Magazine." The text also includes notes about the business of the organization, as well as notices to "Booksellers who are members of the Protestant Episcopal Church" and "secretaries of religious and charitable associations." In addition to their printing and binding work, the broadside states that the NYPEP will take charge of the depositories of five New York institutions -- the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday Union, the New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society, the Auxiliary New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society, the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, and the New York Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Society. The bottom half of the broadside is taken up with a listing of the organization's Board of Trustees, "Other Managers," the general agent, book-keeper, printer (William Van Norden), and binder (Christian Brown), along with a postscript with details on various forthcoming publications by the press. William Van Norden was a prolific printer in New York in the first half of the 19th century, producing more than just religious works. He printed the collected works of Benjamin Franklin, Hannah Moore's memoir, and the Proceedings of the New York Historical Society, among many other works, and later helped produce The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. We could locate no other copies of this broadside anywhere.
