Description
19/09/1813. The Battle of Lake Erie was fought on September 10, 1813, on Lake Erie off the coast of Ohio during the War of 1812. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian confederation of Tecumseh. It was one of the biggest naval battles of the War of 1812.https://vimeo.com/1018422019?share=copyOn October 5, 1813, General William Henry Harrison, who also was the governor of the Indiana Territory and a future president of the United States, led an army of 3,500 American troops against a combined force of eight hundred British soldiers and five hundred American Indian warriors at Moraviantown, along the Thames River in Ontario, Canada. The British troops were under the command of Colonel Henry Procter. Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief, commanded many of the American Indian warriors. The British army was retreating from Fort Malden, Ontario after Oliver Hazard Perry's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. Tecumseh convinced Colonel Procter to make a stand at Moraviantown. The American army won a total victory. As soon as the American troops advanced, the British soldiers fled or surrendered. The American Indians fought fiercely, but lost heart and scattered after Tecumseh died on the battlefield.William Henry Harrison Signed Copy of Plutarch's Lives, carried with him during the War of 1812, presented to his son, John Cleves Symmes Harrison, for his birthday. Specifically, the book is Volume II of Plutarch's Lives, Translated from the Original Greek with Notes Critical and Historical...; by John & William Langhorne. Worcester, Massachusetts: Isaiah Thomas, Jun. August - 1804. Octavo (4.25"" x 7""), 390 pages.Harrison has written a long dedication on the first front endpaper: “Willm. H. Harrison sends this set of Plutarch's to his beloved son J.C. Symmes Harrison in the hope that he will diligently study the lives of great men contained in it & that if he is unable to rival their splendid achievements in their country's service, he will at least imitate their private victories. Head Qtr. Seneca Town. 9th Sept. 1813."" A later descendant has copied a part of this dedication on the facing pastedown.John Cleves Symmes Harrison would be celebrating his 15th birthday on September 29 of that year, and General Harrison likely sent these volumes to his son to mark the occasion. There is a second signature, an ownership signature, ""Willm Henry Harrison"" on the title page, indicating that he is passing on his own book to his eldest son. Written on the blank page facing the first page text is written: ""Presented to J.C.S. Harrison by his beloved Father / September 19, 1813"".

Description
3/2/23. After World War I ended in late 1918, Herbert Hoover became head of the American Relief Administration, which organized shipments of food for millions of starving people in Europe. He did such a fine job in that capacity, saving millions of lives, that it made his reputation and led to his political career. In 1921, President Harding named him Secretary of Commerce. From there he would go on to the presidency. As for the American Relief Administration, it wound down its activities in early 1923 and concluded its efforts in June of that year.Thomas Newkirk Phillips was a former White House pharmicist who went on to work for the Red Cross at its national headquarters in Washington. When World War I broke out, he was instrumental in coordinating Red Cross supplies being sent to Europe. After the war, he coordinated Red Cross medical assistence to Herbert Hoover and his American Relief Administration.Typed Letter Signed on Commerce Department letterhead, Washington, February 3, 1923, to Phillips, thanking him as Red Cross representative for helping make the American Relief Administration’s work a success. “Now that the final reports have been sent to the President and to Congress on the disposal of the army surplus medical stocks, which by Congressional Act were turned over to the American Relief Administration, I want to express to you my warm personal appreciation for your very fine services in connection with the selection and handling of these stocks. Without your expert help it would have been a great test for us to build up a machine competent to take care of this intricate and highly technical problem. The way in which you handled the whole thing was more than satisfactory to us, and we are deeply in your debt.”

With a memoir at the beginning of volume one. The last volume contains an index of first lines and a general index. Extra-illustrated by the insertion of twenty-six engraved plates, including eight hand-colored. Handsomely bound almost certainly by The Harcourt Bindery ca. 1900, in full red morocco, covers with double gilt border with fancy corner-pieces, enclosing a spray of flowers elaborately stamped in gilt and with green morocco leaf inlays and buff morocco inlaid flowers. Spines with four raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments and with three olive green morocco flower inlays. Highly decorative gilt turn-ins surrounding an oval panel of green morocco decorated in gilt with a large central gilt flower with inlaid red morocco flower head, green moire silk end-leaves, all edges gilt. Minimal rubbing and repairs to the outer joints, otherwise fine. Although unsigned the binding is almost certainly by The Harcourt Bindery. An exquisitely bound collection that celebrates the talents of Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), one of the most significant Romantic poets in the English language. Husband to Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, and friend of Lord Byron, Shelley moved in a radical literary circle and died a tragic early death. From sonnet to epics, he is celebrated for his moving philosophical verse, such as famous poems Queen Maub, Ozymandias, Mont Blanc, Ode to the West Wind, or Prometheus Unbound. Since 1900, The Harcourt Bindery of Boston has made fine cloth and leather art bindings by hand, and it remains the largest for-profit hand bookbindery in the U.S. When it was founded in 1900, Boston was home to over 47 book binderies and 1,452 craftsmen (Harcourt Bindery). Since its founding the binder has weathered the Depression, WWII, and changing hands three times between 1927 and 1931. Not only does the Harcourt Bindery offer professional services, but it also offers educational courses to keep the arts of hand binding and book making alive. Near Fine.

Description
Salt Lake City, UT: Crabtree Press, 1982. First printing. Paperback. Very Good. 202pp. Octavo [21 cm] Light orange and black printed wraps. From the Preface- "In summary, Mormon Church leaders and the Great Salt Lake Valley residents were both acquainted with and dependent upon a scheduled and reliable postal service. The Church's intentional isolation in the far western Rocky Mountains brought a momentary security and seclusion, but it also immediately magnified Mormon dependence upon a very long and difficult interchange of communications between their Zion and the rest of the world.
