Description
London: John Churchill, 1831. Stephenson & Churchill, Medical Botany. 4 vols. in 2, 8vo. Unpaginated. 186 attractive hand-colored botanical plates (numbered 1-185, plus an unnumbered plate of "Atropa belladonna" in Vol. I). 19th cent. half calf, marbled boards, a little rubbed. Minor foxing and offsetting from plates, but a very good set. Ownership signature, dated 1871, on endpaper. First edition. A very handsome series, including the Dublin pharmacopeia, which was not used for Woodville's botany. The handsome hand-colored plates make a very good impression next to more celebrated works by Sowerby, Edwards, etc. See G-M 5740 for Stephenson, who was the first to be operated on by Roux for cleft palate, and who first described the operation in his thesis of 1820. Churchill was the great pioneer of acupuncture in England; see Lu & Needham, "Celestial Lancets," pp. 297-99. Nissen 1891. Pritzel 8946. .

Description
51 x 42 cms. (20 x 16.5"). Canvas over wooden board. A sensitive portrait of the composer, blind in his right eye since childhood, depicted head-and-shoulders, turned right, wearing a blue coat and white-collared shirt. Some minor wear and smudging but in very good condition overall. "Together with C.E.F. Weyse he was the foremost representative of the late Classical and early Romantic periods in Denmark. ... Unlike Weyse, the other principal Danish composer of the period, Kuhlau was extrovert and modern. His style contains many elements of the Danish musical tradition but is mainly cosmopolitan. A conspicuous feature is his parody technique, in which themes, passages and sometimes whole movements by other composers function as a catalyst for his own compositions. However, Kuhlau has his own distinctive artistic character, and his best works - the piano, flute and chamber music and the dramatic works, including several masterly overtures - exerted a profound influence on Danish music during the rest of the 19th century." Gorm Busk in Grove Music Online Hornemann, a Danish painter of pastels and miniatures, was known mainly for his portraits. He was the father of Johan Ole Emil Hornemann (1809-1870) and grandfather of C.F.E. Hornemann (1840-1906), both composers. Of Danish origin, Copmann worked in Copenhagen and as an itinerant portrait and landscape painter in Hamburg and Dresden, Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. in ca. 1834 and was active in Brooklyn, New York (1834); Charleston, South Carolina (1834-35); in New Orleans (1837); and in Louisville, KY (1848). Rutledge: Artists in the Life of Charleston, 154, 177. Encyclopaedia of New Orleans Artists, 86. Artprice Website A highly attractive portrait of this important Danish composer by a Danish-born artist working in the U.S. in the first part of the nineteenth century.

Originally Projected and Published by John Boydell. Reduced and Re-Engraved by the Heliotype Process With Selections from the Text. Edited by J. Parker Norris. Philadelphia: Gebbie & Barrie, Publishers, 1874. In the 25 original parts. Large quarto (14 3/8 x 11 1/4 inches; 365 x 286 mm). xvi pp Each part with 4 heliotype engraved plates for a total of 100 engraved plates. Each plate accompanied by a leaf of text from the corresponding play. A title-page and preliminary pages are found split between parts 24 and 25. Part 25 with a message to the subscriber about publisher's binding options. We could find not other copy at auction in the original parts. Each part in publisher's original blue printed wrappers. Wrappers are are a bit brittle and with some tears to a few. Internally all leaves and engravings are extremely clean. Housed together in a cloth clamshell. Very good. The front wrappers read: "The Boydell Shakespeare. Now First Reproduced by the Heliotype Process from the Original Plates Accompanied by Selections from the Text of the Dramas Illustrating Each Scene Represented by the Painter." This selection of 100 illustrations is taken from 200 plates engraved from 170 paintings contained in Boydell's illustration of Shakespeare's Works, and the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery. "Any lover of Shakespeare, desiring to possess an original copy of Boydell's great work, (if willing to pay the now almost fabulous price required for a brilliant copy-would have to wait and watch perhaps for years; and those who do not care to invest so much, will find in the present publication, a repro-duction, faithful in all its details, somewhat reduced in size-a necessary step to bring the book within the reach of the many thousands who desire such a work-but, to many, really preferable from its greater portability. The work will contain 100 plates, all of which are perfect studies, in every variety of grouping and composition, and every human expression faithfully delineated. There will be 25 parts, imperial 4to. size, each part containing 4 plates, with text, from that edited by Clark & Wright, under the supervision of J. Parker Norris, Esq., who also contributes to this work an Essay on the Genius of the Painters and Engravers of Boydell's Shakespeare. The parts will be published at ONE DOLLAR each, thus offering to the American public, for twenty-five dollars, a reproduction (about one-half the scale) of what was originally published at $1,000 gold, at a cost of $5,000,000 gold, and the pecuniary ruin of the celebrated originator. John Boydell. (From the Prospectus) Jaggard, pg 542. Shaksperiana,. HBS 69575. $1,500.

Description
[Philadelphia, 1920. Good.. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Tanned and somewhat brittle, minor edge chipping, some short closed edge tears. A seemingly unrecorded promotional touting the talents of the now-obscure Famous Suwanee River Quartette. The group, formed in Cleveland, Ohio around 1910 and led by John Gantt, traveled extensively for almost fifteen years, and became especially well-known for their rendition of "Old Black Joe," which is mentioned here. The present pamphlet, a most ephemeral item, advertises the group with press releases, reviews, "recent press comments," descriptions of the musical strengths of Gantt as well as the other performers as a whole. The text claims that "Mr. Gantt is entitled to supremacy in this field...he is a master interpreter of the songs, melodies, and folk lore of the Southern Negro." The work is illustrated with photographs of the musicians with their instruments on both the front cover and the internal two-page spread. No copies in OCLC.

Description
Boston: Gould and Lincoln, 1853.. Bourne was captured enroute to the California gold fields. His sprightly narrative deals mostly with South America and its natives, but he did ship out on various craft, one of which was a whaler, "the ship Hudson, Captain Clift, of Mystic, Connecticut - a whaling vessel, just from the Falkland Islands."Imagine my surprise at discovering there actually was a whaler of this name with Clift as captain, homeported in Mystic and bound for the Falkland Islands, 1848-1852! See Lund, 6828. I've had copies of this book before, but I think this is an unusual configuration, in that it contains 28 pages of product advertisements by publisher Gould and Lincoln. Bound as issued in blindstamped brown cloth with gold spine lettering. Top of backstrip repaired, else a very good copy.. 11.5 x 19 cm. (16 publisher's ads), xxiv-233, (12 publisher's ads) pp. b/w frontispiece and plates

New York: Academic Press, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/good. First Edition. Rubbing, toning, and bumps to covers, corners, and edges of gray cloth over boards. Dust-spotting to edges of text block. Previous owner's name in ink to front paste-down. Light toning to endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Perceptual Modification: Adapting to Altered Sensory Environments is about the study of human perception using a particular research strategy: the systematic alteration of vision or audition. It is assumed that by observing how the sensory apparatus copes with this disturbance it will be possible to formulate valuable hypotheses about the structure and development of "normal" perception and perceptual-motor coordination. The specific goals of this book are, first, to organize the vast and confusing literature on adaptation to perceptual rearrangement and, second, to assess its contribution to the understanding of "normal" perception and perceptual learning. The book begins with discussions of adaptation to small prism-induced displacements of the visual field. Separate chapters follow on the proposition that adaptation to prismatic displacement and other forms of rearrangement is actually a form of learning; adaptation to inverted and reversed vision; optical tilt; illusory motions of the visual field; size-depth distortions; and distortions of form. Subsequent chapters deal with studies of auditory rearrangement; examine individual and interspecies differences in adaptability; and the study of adaptation to the visual distortions encountered by the underwater observer. The book is written for researchers and graduate students in experimental psychology. It will be of value and interest whether the reader is a specialist in the area of perceptual modification, or indeed a generalist.(Publisher).
