Description
Milan: Ulrico Hoepli, 1942. Folio (In‑2°). Limited edition, copy no. 72 of 150. A distinguished and beautifully edition of Marco Polo's Il Milione, illustrated with thirty original lithographs by Massimo Campigli, sixteen of them full‑page and printed in black, red, and sepia. The sheets are issued loose, as published. The work is preserved in its original folder, decorated with a lithograph, and housed in the original cardboard slipcase, both showing minor corner wear. A paper bookplate appears on the first flyleaf: Ex Libris Lorenzo Spallino.Printed on handmade Fabriano paper and limited to 150 numbered copies, the edition is signed and dated '42 in pencil on the colophon by Campigli. This publication represents a remarkable collaboration between three major figures of twentieth‑century Italian art and fine printing. The text and in‑text lithographs were printed in Verona at Giovanni Mardersteig's Officina Bodoni, one of the most celebrated private presses of the period. The full‑page and double‑page lithographs were hand‑pulled in Milan by Piero Fornasetti, later renowned for his iconic decorative arts. Campigli's illustrations, with their stylized, archaic figures inspired by Etruscan and Mediterranean art, make this volume one of his most significant achievements in book illustration.

Description
63 pp. 8vo, attractive modern marbled boards, paper lettering-piece on spine. Paris: Remy & Delalande, 1789. A very rare catalogue describing a vast collection of mostly prints and albums of prints. The 328 lots, many of which consist of more than a dozen items, include the work of Ammon, Visscher, Bourdon, Audran, Poilly, G. Edelinck, Dürer, Bloemart, Goltzius, Bosse, Callot, Lebas, Choffard, etc. The prints are generally after pieces by famous artists such as Rubens, Hollar, Raphael, Rembrandt, and the Sadelers. Many of the recueils, which are well-described, contain original prints by the artist and, when factoring in copies, number about 1000 prints. Some of the print suites come from the Crozat family collection. Very good copy; none in North America. Sporadic and inoffensive foxing. Engraved bookplate of Henry Pannier (1853-1935), the Parisian art dealer, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on the verso of the title-page. ❧ Cicognara 4546. Lugt 4413.
