Description
Boston: Christopher Publishing Publishing house, 1957. First Edition. Signed inscription from Weatherford on the front endpaper: “Christianity as a religion is opposed to opportunism p. 300. Sincerely, W.D. Weatherford. July 28, 1957.” Willis Duke Weatherford was an educator, religious leader, writer, and social pioneer who was active in the student YMCA movement. His position from 1902 to 1919 s international student secretary for the colleges of the South and Southwest required almost constant travel, periodically visiting the approximately two hundred colleges for which he was responsible. He founded the Blue Ridge Assembly in North Carolina, intended to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body. From 1936 to 1946, Weatherford taught philosophy and religion at Fisk University, a predominantly black school in Nashville. During his years of travel for the YMCA he became increasingly sensitive to the plight of blacks in the South. In this title, Weatherford makes a challenge to the churches not only to catch up with the Constitution as interpreted by the decisions of the United States Supreme Court but also to fulfill their own professions of faith based on the teachings of Jesus, who would have us all become more truly the children of God and the brothers of all people. 8vo., dark-blue cloth, lettering in gilt, in dust jacket; 310 pages. Very Good (gilt is pretty bright but bit of general wear covers; contents clean & tight with little browning endpapers; lower corner of few pages bumped with tiny hole to page 95/96); few moderate tears d/j.
