Lambarene, 1949. SCHWEITZER, Albert. N.p., N.d., ca. 1949]. One page black and white printed directory of Albert Schweitzer's Hospital he founded in 1913, located in Lambarene, now Gabon. Inscribed by Schweitzer in blue ink, three lines. Signed "A.S." The top half of the page is a black and white illustration of the hospital grounds marked with 46 locations. The bottom half of the page names each of the 46 locations. Written in French. (Measures 12 x 8 1/4 inches). Two fold lines. Very good. The Albert Schweitzer Hospital is still one of the primary sources of healthcare for the surrounding regions of West Africa. Its Medical Research Unit is one of the leading scientific institutions in Africa working to end malaria. At Lambaréné, Schweitzer was doctor and surgeon in the hospital, pastor of a congregation, administrator of a village, superintendent of buildings and grounds, writer of scholarly books, commentator on contemporary history, musician, host to countless visitors. He received many awards including the Goethe Prize of Frankfurt and honorary doctorates from many universities. In 1952, he received the Noble Peace Prize for his philosophy "reverence of life" and for his good deeds in Africa. HBS 67532. $750.
