Description
[Rome]: [Marcello Silber], after 12th August, 1514. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in 19th c. green morocco, a.e.g., gilt turn-ins, spine rubbed. Ex libris R.B.. A fine copy. Early foliation at upper corners of the lvs. A political letter from Henry VIII to Pope Leo X of Rome, written by Henry when he was only 23 years old. The letter is a rare piece of printed diplomatic correspondence from the last decades of England as a Catholic monarchy. It is one of the earliest of Henry’s letters to be printed. (A letter to Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, “Epistola invictissimi Regis Anglie Francie ad Cesaream Maiestatem", written in answer to one soliciting aid against the Turks from Maximilian, was printed in 1512.) Extremely rare. 3 copies located in North America (Harvard, NYPL, Yale). 1 copy in Switzerland, 1 in Germany, 1 in France, and 3 in Britain (2 in the British Library and 1 in the Bodleian). EDIT16 locates only a single copy in Italy (Marciana, Venice). The letter concerns the peace concluded 7 August 1514 between Henry VIII and Louis XII, which included a marriage between Mary Tudor, Henry's sister, and Louis XII. In the letter, Henry explains that the match was made to strengthen and stabilize the peace: “ut autem haec pax firmior stabiliorque sit, eidem serenissimo Francorum Regi, Illustrissimam Sororem nostram Dominam Mariam ab ipso instantissime petitam, in matrimonium promisimus….” Henry also explains, in detail, the dissolution of his sister’s earlier betrothal to Charles, son of Philip I of Castille, the future Emperor Charles V. The negotiations of the peace with Louis XII followed the English invasion of France in 1513, during which Henry had personally taken part in sieges against Thérouanne and Tournai and at the battle of Guinegate. One purpose of a French alliance, for Henry, was to counter the power of his father-in-law, the king of Aragon, with whom there were political frictions (about the peace treaty the King writes: ‘I have not mentioned a single thing to the truly most serene King of Aragon because he greatly enjoys dealing with his affairs by himself’). The marriage of Mary and Louis XII took place on 9 October 1514, but peace with France ended in 1515 with the death of Louis and the accession of François I.

Description
TIMLIN, William M.. 8220;The Treasure Ship." Original pen, ink and watercolor painting. Titled and signed at lower left and marked with Timlin's owl device. [N.d.: n.d.]. Image size: 21 x 14 1/4 inches; 535 x 365 mm. Matted, framed, and glazed. Framed size: 34 3/4 x 27 inches; 880 x 680 mm. Framed in a beautiful gilt frame. This painting is not attributed as an illustration to any known work, but it could be an unused image for "The Ship that Sailed to Mars." Depicts the front half of a large galleon that is pulled up to the dock. There are three more boats coming into the dock in the distance. The main boat is flying an English flag and one of the three on the horizon is flying a pirate flag. There are a few people on the dock including some pirates. This is a beautiful original watercolor in tones of browns and blues. William Timlin was born in Northumberland, England, and studied art in Newcastle before following his parents to South Africa in 1915, where he completed his studies in art and architecture. He then practiced as an architect, designing a number of major public buildings in Kimberley; at the same time he worked as an artist, producing paintings, etchings and pastels of conventional subjects, in addition to the watercolor fantasies for which he is best known. He also wrote stories and music, and did periodical illustrations. In 1923 he published "The Ship that Sailed to Mars", which he wrote, illustrated and produced himself. This has become a classic work. It has been asserted that the illustrations to this book put him in the top ten of fantasy illustrators with Rackham, Dulac, Nielsen and Goble. HBS 69109. $15,000.

Tijuana, San Diego: InSite; Centro Cultural Tijuana, CECUT; San Diego Museum of Art ; Installation Gallery, 2005. color plates, ports., cat, map, ind., color pict. wrps. Unprecedented two-city exhibition of international contemporary art explores moments of urban crisis. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, who is based in São Paulo, Farsites brings together more than 50 artists from the Americas, as well as Europe and Africa who work in a range of media, from photography to installation. Although a few works present the urban site as a map or overall network, many focus on the moments when these systems fail or fall short. In any city there are conditions that resist the collective desire for a clean, efficient appearance or modernization. The most ambitious catalogue documenting the fifth version of inSITE. This has become one of the most noteworthy San Diego-Mexico border art events. "Installation" and "site-specific". Essays accompany extensive catalogue. GREAT REFERENCE. Good. David Thomas Ansted FRS was an English professor of geology and author of numerous books on geology. His role as a teacher at Addiscombe Military Seminary, where future East India Company army officers were trained, had an influence on the study of geology in the colonies. "From 1844 to 1847 he acted as assistant-secretary of the Geological Society, and for many years he edited its quarterly journal. In later life, from about 1850, he turned to the practical applications of geology in connection with mining, engineering, water-supply, and the like, and was constantly consulted on such matters both in this country and abroad." [DNB]. "Ansted had a good career as a geologist, teaching at King's College London, and lecturing as well to members of the British East India Company and a school for civil engineers. He wrote many books on geology and geography." [Linda Hall Libr.].
