London: Thomas Tegg. 1779, First Edition. 32mo – 10.6cm, (2), XVI, 304pp. Including Table of the Hymns at rear. Full contemporary leather with bright gilt decoration and border ruling on front and rear covers, spine with bright gilt title and ornate decoration, original soft yellow endpapers, all page edges gilt. Near Fine and complete – a Very Rare copy of the Olney Hymns showing the first publication of the hymn "Amazing Grace" (p.38-39). This most unique and important copy is preserved in a custom full-leather clam shell box. "Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn written by English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807), published in 1779. With a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of the sins people commit and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God, "Amazing Grace" is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world having been translated in over 50 languages. Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed into the Royal Navy and became a sailor, eventually participating in the slave trade. One night a terrible storm battered his vessel so severely that he became frightened enough to call out to God for mercy, a moment that marked the beginning of his spiritual conversion. His career in slave trading lasted a few years more until he quit going to sea altogether and began studying theology. Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses, and it may have been chanted by the congregation without music. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper's Olney Hymns, but it settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States however, "Amazing Grace" was used extensively during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies, but in 1835 it was joined to a tune named "New Britain" to which it is most frequently sung today. Author Gilbert Chase writes that "Amazing Grace" is "without a doubt the most famous of all the folk hymns",[1] and Jonathan Aitken, a Newton biographer, estimates that it is performed about 10 million times annually.[2] It has had a significant influence in folk music, and has become an emblematic African American spiritual. Its universal message has been a significant factor in its crossover into secular music. "Amazing Grace" saw a resurgence in popularity in the U.S. during the 1960s and has been recorded thousands of times during and since the 20th century, sometimes appearing on popular music charts.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1950. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This inscribed U.S. first edition of The Grand Alliance, the third volume of Winston S. Churchill’s Second World War memoirs, represents a compelling convergence of lives. First, the recipient - Lady Davina Woodhouse, the daughter of Churchill’s first great love, Pamela Plowden. Second, Davina’s husband, Monty Woodhouse, who inhabits some of the history recounted in this book, and who would likewise prove integral to geopolitical events during Churchill’s second and final premiership. Third is the man Davina did not marry, Anthony Eden, Churchill’s long-time lieutenant and long-delayed, ill-fated successor as Prime Minister. The inscription, five lines inked in blue on the front free endpaper recto, reads “To | Davina | from | Winston | 1950”. Condition of this inscribed copy approaches very good minus in a very good plus dust jacket. The red cloth binding remains bright and clean with minor shelf wear confined to extremities. The contents are respectably bright and clean. We find no previous ownership marks other than the author’s presentation inscription. The front hinge is slightly tender, but nonetheless solidly intact with no threat to binding integrity. The pastedowns are mildly browned from the glue. Light spotting is confined to the page edges. The original topstain is faded and the head and tail bands dimpled. Head and tail bands, dated title page, copyright page, topstain, and binding are all consonant with first printing of the first edition, as is the unclipped, “$6.00” price on the dust jacket flap. The jacket is bright, clean, and complete. Light wear is primarily confined to the spine head and adjacent upper front face, front hinge, and front flap fold. The red spine panel is only lightly sunned. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. Lady Davidema “Davina” Katharine Cynthia Mary Millicent Bulwer-Lytton (1909-1995) was the daughter of Pamela Frances Audrey Bulwer-Lytton (née Plowden), Countess of Lytton (1874-1971). Winston Churchill met Pamela Plowden in India in late 1896. Pamela was Winston’s “first great love”. For several years, during his early career as an itinerant, adventure-seeking cavalry officer and war correspondent, “Churchill was obviously in love with this beautiful girl” and they maintained a robust and romantic correspondence. But in the end there was no union. In 1902 Pamela married Victor Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl of Lytton. Churchill married later, in 1908. Winston and Pamela “remained on affectionate terms” and Winston “continued to write to her for the rest of his life including two sympathetic letters after the deaths of her sons: Anthony, the eldest, in a 1933 air crash and John, at El Alamein in 1942” while Winston was wartime prime minister. Davina, too, experienced a Second World War loss. Her husband was killed in France in May 1940 less than two weeks after Churchill became wartime prime minister. Churchill’s political right hand and eventual successor, Robert Anthony Eden (1897-1977) had been a close friend of Davina’s husband. Although married, Eden and his wife were increasingly estranged. After the death of Davina’s husband, Eden and Davina found solace in one another and “her presence was to be a constant factor over the next five years.” (Thorpe, The Life and Times of Anthony Eden, First Earl of Avon) But Eden eventually lost Davina to a Byronic war hero, Christopher Montague “Monty” Woodhouse (1917-2001). Ironically, the two met at Eden’s home, to which Eden invited Monty for a wartime briefing in July 1944. Monty and Davina wed on 28 August 1945. Their marriage lasted half a century, until Davina’s death. During Churchill’s second and final postwar premiership, Monty played a significant role in advocating and precipitating the Iranian coup of 1953 and later served as a Member of Parliament. PLEASE NOTE THAT A CONSIDERABLY MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Reference: Cohen A240.1(III).a, Woods/ICS A123(aa), Langworth p.258

Description
Upsala, Sweden: Johan Edman. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Bergman's study of chemical affinities, including a large fold-out table, "the finest achievement in the tradition of affinity tables," and a major predecessor of the periodic table. "Tobern Bergman published his table of chemical affinities and his accompanying 90-page Latin Dissertation of Elective Attractions in 1775, approximately three-quarters of a century before Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer published their periodic tables of the chemical elements..." Bergman "put himself to this enormous task [of classifying chemical affinities] and produced... the most elaborate affinity table so far, comprising 50 columns and constructed for two different analytical methods: dry and wet ways.... Bergman's table represented a giant stride in chemists' capacity for analytic control. It listed 25 separate acids, 15 earths, and 16 metallic calces... Translated into French, German, and English, it won immediate recognition from the European chemical community, which indicates that the affinity table had a secure place in contemporary chemical theorizing" (Kim, Affinity, that Elusive Dream: A Genealogy of the Chemical Revolution. J.A. Schufle, Introduction, Dissertation on Elective Attractions. IN: Nova Acta Regiae Societatis, Vol II, pp. 161-250. [Note: There are two paginations of the same paper, one numbered 159-248, one numbered 161-250; no priority known.] Upsala: Johan. Edman, 1775. Quarto (9x11 in), original blue wrappers; uncut and almost entirely unopened; custom box. The whole volume offered. Complete with nine plates (including the two folding tables for the Bergman paper). While rare in any form, this is a nearly perfect copy in the exceedingly rare original wrappers.

Description
THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RUSSIA OF THE 18TH CENTURY, WITH A FOLDING PLATE OF THE COMPARATIVE CENSUS OF THE POPULATION Thick 8vo. [20 x 12 cm], (2) ff., cxlviii, 1000 pp., (1) folding plate of tables ( 24"x 18.5") Bound in contemporary half calf and speckled paper over boards, gilt paneled spine and morocco title label, corners a little worn; some toning and foxing throughout, very good. Very rare first edition of this geographical and social encyclopedia of Russia, published the year of Catherine the Great's death: it is one of the earliest foreign-language reference works on the country we have seen. In a thousand pages Heym covers the cities, towns and administrative districts of Russia, its rivers and mountains, industries, trade routes and agricultural products, cultural institutions, schools, and places of worship—plus assorted facts such as population statistics, university tuition fees, institutional endowments, the cost of running urban poorhouses, agricultural methods, and the quality of local drinking water. Heym's pride in Moscow University (where he taught German and eventually became rector) is reflected in a detailed account of the university's history, faculty, facilities, and student population (e.g., "The anatomical theater is very roomy and has a particularly rich collection of miscarriages of all sorts," p. 506). Heym (1759-1821) moved to Moscow in 1779 and initially taught German at Moscow University, publishing several German-Russian dictionaries and grammars. In the Introduction he explains that he had planned to translate a Russian encyclopedia into German, but found the work so riddled with errors that he decided to compile an original work based on a wide range of sources. The digital version of the Heym is of the printed text, but incomplete, without the folding chart. The large folding chart ( 24 " x 18 1/2") – often missing- is a census of 44 different regions of the Russian Empire, divided in North, South and Central territories and lists over 400 towns and cities with their population, some with as low as 200 others more that 400,000 inhabitants. This is an interesting and comprehensive document which makes comparisons possible. 2 US copies: Harvard and Indiana (none of which mentioning the folding plate, present in our copy). *SWB record, Bayrische Staatsbibliothek record, Hollis record; Catalogue des Russica H 792.

All original wrappers, three side-stapled, two stapled, one bound. Some light chipping and edgewear to wrappers of first two issues, no. 2 with cover coming loose from staples, some scattered toning, Supplement to Now with some water-staining and dust-staining, overall very good. New York: Neon, 1956-1960. "Supplement to Now" with hand-written dedication from Fielding Dawson on front flyleaf, reading "For Bob, Fee Dawson, 21 April 1959" A complete run in 4 issues plus the two supplements issued of the short-lived New York poetry and prose magazine edited by writer and critic Gilbert Sorrentino (1929-2006). In his opening note to the first issue of Neon, Sorrentino writes, "Anyone who tries to start and maintain a magazine in America is virtually doomed from the start...the material in the magazine will be compared by all the professional artlovers to things which they have seen in bigger and more renowned magazines; as if nothing ever started...NEON is going to try to be sort of a midwife to the writing of young men...writing which would have a hard time being published in the bigger magazines...I am printing it because I believe it presages better things." And in an editorial prefacing the second issue, Sorrentino goes on, "Without magazines like NEON, the difficulty remains: no outlet for the avant-garde writer. The little magazine has fostered modern literature since before the First World War. It has been its strength and support and oftentimes its only outlet. While the little magazine exists, exists still with the purpose of publishing the new, the different, the radical, literature will exist come war or peace or assembly-line education." Description
Washington DC: Gibson Bros, 1882. Bell, Alexander Graham (1847-1922). Upon the electrical experiments to determine the location of the bullet in the body of the late President Garfield; an upon a successful form of induction balance for the painless detection of metallic masses in the human body. 58pp. Text illustrations. Washington DC: Gibson Brothers, 1882. 228 x 150 mm. Original printed wrappers, spine perished, evidence of previous binding in a book (oversewing, glue and mesh at spine). Very good copy. Embossed stamp of the Connecticut State Library on front wrapper and first leaf. First Edition, Author's Offprint for private circulation (so noted on the front wrapper) of the paper describing Bell's induction balance, the best instrument for locating metallic objects in the body prior to the x-ray. On July 2, 1881 President James Garfield was shot by a deranged assassin and survived for 79 days before dying from septicemia on September 19. The assassination attempt left Garfield with a bullet lodged behind his pancreas, but his death could likely have been prevented had he received better medical care after the shooting. Unfortunately, his doctors did understand antiseptic principles and so did not take any measures to prevent infection, probing the president's wound with unsterilized fingers and instruments in a vain attempt to find the bullet; they also misjudged the path the bullet took, believing that it had traveled to the right rather than to the left in Garfield's body. Shortly after the shooting Bell was asked if he could invent a device to detect the bullet in Garfield's body without the need for painful probing. Bell came up with his induction balance, a machine that used a telephone hooked up to an electric current to locate metallic objects in the body. On August 2 Bell tried to find the bullet lodged inside the president but was unsuccessful, in part because the metal in Garfield's bed frame prevented Bell from getting an accurate result, and in part because Garfield's doctor would only let Bell use his device on Garfield's right side. The president's deteriorating condition prevented Bell from making a second attempt, and after his initial failure he was denounced as a charlatan; however, an improved version of Bell's induction balance saved countless lives on the battlefield in the decades before the x-ray came into general use. [Akron, Ohio?], 1835. Folio sheet, folded to 8" x 10". [1], [3 blanks] pp. Printed on the recto of the first leaf. Light wear, short closed tear at outer margin [no loss]. Very Good. This rare plea for the establishment of a Bank at Akron is signed in type by James W. Philips, Richard Howe, and seven other members of the Committee at Akron, December 18, 1835. It emphasizes the accelerating development of commerce across the Alleghenies. Explaining "the facts on which our application for a Bank is based," they note that the Pennsylvania & Ohio Canal will have its terminus at Akron; and provide a detailed mercantile and financial profile of Akron and the neighboring town of Middlebury, two miles distant, listing exports from flour, wheat, oats, cheese and butter, plus other exports by canal. Current "population of the village is between 12 and 1300." "The Bank of Akron was not established until 1845" [Morgan]. Morgan 8175 [2- AAS, Kent State]. OCLC 1053971112 [1- AAS], 34006223 [1- Kent State] as of December 2023. Not in American Imprints or Thomson.

Description
ANTHONY BURGESS (1917-1993). Burgess was a British author best remembered for A Clockwork Orange.TLS. 1pg. 9 x 6. November 2, 1971. No place. A typed letter signed Anthony Burgess to Ted Levine: Forgive this delay, not my fault since your letter has only just reached me. I fear that I may be too late to give you what you want, and anyway I'm always embarrassed by that sort of self-laudation, even minorly. But here is a specimen from ENDERBY: ...seeing the sea, as always, as a clever green child that could draw a straight line for hand... The clumsiness is deliberate, to take away any hints of glibness. A poet is viewing the sea, so the image is not pretentious. The anthropomorphic morphic approach - personification, if you like - is right for a man who, like the poet-hero, sees no difference between human beings and the inanimate world: all are to be kept out, as potential interferers with the poetic process, but they are, nevertheless, drawn into that process. The letter is on his letterhead and is in fine condition.
