Description
Boston: Joseph H Allen, 1867. First Edition. 12 vols. in 1. First appearance anywhere, complete in 12 issues of The Student and Schoolmate Illustrated Monthly, vol. XIX no. 1 through vol. XX no. 6 (Jan.–Dec. 1867). The original dozen monthly parts bound by the publisher in their original cloth, preceding the 1868 1st book edition published by Loring, that’s more common than unused treadmills, as well as the uncountable reprints of it, and the hundreds of attempts to replicate it by Alger and others (disciples owe their masters temporary belief, not perpetual captivity). Original cloth, a tiny chip at the spine’s base, the odd few pages toned, but get over it. This is a very good, unrepaired copy of a rare book in original cloth (no copies listed as sold at auction on RBH), and as American as apple pie, but these days, that’d be frozen apple pie, with a slice of processed cheese on top. Ref: Grolier 100 American, no. 75. Ralph Gardner, 445, saying: “Ragged Dick was not the author’s first book, as is widely believed, but it is the story that launched him as an all–time best–selling author.”. You say you like your books important? Ok. Here’s the prototype of all rags to riches novels (the tycoon’s Rocky), and the formula for the American Dream. Alger coyly defines success as more achievement than expectation, implying that the inverse is the definition of failure. So take note of that inverse and veil your prospects. Later in the 19th century Communism emerged as a foil to Capitalism but no one would have ever guessed that the fatal flaw of Communism would be that there wasn’t any money in it. The most popular novel of its day, then, within a generation, the American dream, as Ragged Dick defined it, became so repeated that its origin was taken for granted (every great river is disapproving of its source). Then it was exported by Hollywood in the greatest exploit of propaganda in the history of the world. Now it has had a resurgence, and the dream’s birthplace is being revisited with newfound admiration by a new generation of readers (legs).

2 volumes: 576+xv pages; 499+xv pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in 3/4 period leather. Translated from the first German edition (1781) which includes a chapter entitled: "Observations and additions to by Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider". Translated with additional notes and reviews by Jean Baptiste Lefebvre Villebrune. First Spanish edition published in 1772 (Madrid). (Sabin 36805) First French edition.Antonio de Ulloa (12 January 1716 – 3 July 1795) was a Spanish general, explorer, author, astronomer, colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. He was born in Seville, the son of an economist. Ulloa entered the navy in 1733. In 1735 he was appointed with fellow Spaniard Jorge Juan a member of the French Geodesic Mission, a scientific expedition which the French Academy of Sciences was sending to Ecuador to measure a degree of meridian arc at the equator, led by Pierre Bouguer. He remained there from 1736 to 1744, during which time the two Spaniards discovered the element platinum. In 1745, having finished their scientific labors, Ulloa and Jorge Juan prepared to return to Spain, agreeing to travel on different ships in order to minimize the danger of losing the important fruits of their labors. The ship upon which Ulloa was traveling was captured by the British, and he was taken as a prisoner to England. In that country, through his scientific attainments, he gained the friendship of the men of science, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. In a short time, through the influence of the president of this society, he was released and was able to return to Spain. He published an account of the people and the countries they have met (1748), which was translated into English as A Voyage to South America. He became prominent as a scientist and was appointed to serve on various important scientific commissions. He is to be credited with the establishment of the first museum of natural history, the first metallurgical laboratory in Spain, and the observatory of Cadiz. In 1758 he returned to South America as governor of Huancavelica in Peru and the general manager of the quicksilver mines there. He held this position until 1764. He arrived on 5 March 1766 in New Orleans to serve as the first Spanish governor of West Louisiana. The French colonists refused to recognize Spanish rule, and de Ulloa was expelled from Louisiana by a Creole uprising during the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768. For the remainder of his life he served as a naval officer. In 1779 he became lieutenant-general of the naval forces. As a result of his scientific work in Peru, he published (Madrid, 1784) Relación histórica del viaje á la América Meridional, which contains a full, accurate, and clear description of the greater part of South America geographically, and of its inhabitants and natural history. In collaboration with the Jorge Juan mentioned above, he also wrote Noticias secretas de América, giving valuable information regarding the early religious orders in Spanish America.Condition:Sever worming to spines, exterior hinges cracked, point chipped, library stamps to title pages else a good copy of a scarce item.

Beverly Hills, California: William Boyd Productions, 1952. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto. 10pp., 43pp. Bradbound in (formerly) blue wrappers. About very good with discoloration from water staining to the wraps as well as the first and last five to six pages and five interior pages with their torn corner but not affecting the text. A working script for the 26th episode of the 1952 *Hopalong Cassidy* television show starring William Boyd. Included are both the screenplay and the shooting schedule, as laid out in the first 10 blue pages, noting the number of scenes to be shot on each of the three days of filming, as well as a detailed breakdown of the scene by location ("Trail", "Ranch," Newspaper Office"). While the shooting schedule includes various pencil notations, the 43 page screenplay is marked up with note, additions, edits, and strike-thoughts on nearly every page, altering both dialogue and stage directions, with several pages of notes spilling over to the blank facing sheet. The episode, which finds Hopalong encountering kids passing out counterfeit money, was written by veteran writer Royal King Cole, who worked on many notable movie serial, including *Batman* (1943), *Captain American* (1944), and *Superman* (1948), all of which were the first live-action appearances of those icon characters.

Description
Sydney: H.E.C. Robinson Pty. Ltd., 1940. Very Good. An uncommon and strategically vital folding map of East Asia, documenting the complex territorial disputes of the Second Sino-Japanese War. This edition, compiled by the premier Sydney cartographic house of H.E.C. Robinson, offers a detailed view of the international and provincial boundaries of China, Japan, and their neighbors during the height of the Japanese occupation. The map is a 'Copy 1' variant, distinguished by its bold identification of 'Manchukuo' across northeast China and an unshaded title cartouche. Beyond its political boundaries, the work serves as a detailed guide to regional transportation, featuring shipping routes, major roads, and the critical rail networks-including the Trans-Siberian line-that defined the logistics of the era. An essential primary document for the study of 20th-century Asian geopolitics and the cartographic history of the Pacific War. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Full-color map using Bonnes Projection; features a large-scale view of East Asia (1:6,000,000) with relief shown by shading. +++ Inset: Includes a detailed map of the Aleutian Islands and the Bering Sea at 1:12,000,000 scale. +++ Binding: Original pictorial card wraps, likely published with a tropical or regional motif consistent with Robinson's other pre-war folding maps. +++ Content: Documents international and provincial boundaries, populated places, and extensive transportation networks. +++ Imprint: H.E.C. Robinson Pty. Ltd., Sydney. No printed date; dated by content to the 1937-1940 window. +++ Specs: Approximately 27.5 x 37.5 inches (70 x 95 cm) when unfolded. CONDITION: Very Good. +++ The Map: The color remains bright and vibrant throughout. The paper is crisp, showing only the expected wear at the original folding points. Internally clean with no significant markings or loss to the cartographic surface. +++ The Wraps: The pictorial covers show light shelf handling and minor age-toning typical for paper ephemera of this period. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Political Cartography: Captures the 'cartographic reality' of the Japanese occupation, marking the puppet state of Manchukuo as a distinct entity-a status not recognized by many contemporary nations. +++ Strategic Logistics: Provides a snapshot of the shipping and rail infrastructure that supported both civilian trade and military movement in the Far East during the late 1930s. +++ Regional Scarcity: While variants are held by the National Library of Australia, this specific map is uncommon in the trade, especially in its original folding state. +++ Infrastructure & Logistics: Meticulously details the Trans-Siberian Railway and regional shipping lanes, highlighting the vital supply lines of the era. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - H.E.C. Robinson established himself as the definitive mapmaker for Australia and the South Pacific, with his firm providing the geographical context for the 'Near North' to an anxious public. This map, released between 1937 and 1940, captures the final years of the pre-Pearl Harbor era, when the Second Sino-Japanese War was the primary concern of Pacific observers. The bold naming of 'Manchukuo' and 'Manchuria' across different variants reflects the evolving-and often conflicting-political labels of the period. SUBJECTS: East Asia History, Second Sino-Japanese War, Manchukuo, Cartography of Japan, Chinese Provincial Boundaries, Australian Printing. Map, Ephemera, 20th-century Cartography. BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: Trove #1858554; NLA Bib ID 1528434.

Description
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1929. First edition. SUMPTUOUS MONOGRAPH ON BIRD BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE TO TERRITORY--BEAUTIFUL PLATES. 12 1/2 inches tall hardcover, publisher's green cloth binding, gilt title to cover and spine, xii, 136 pp, frontis and 10 lithographic plates on heavy stock with tissue guards by George E. Lodge, and 2 full page plans of territorial areas. Near fine in very good minus faded jacket with chipped edges in protective mylar cover. HENRY ELIOT HOWARD (1873 – 26 December 1940) was an English amateur ornithologist, noted for being one of the first to describe territoriality behaviours in birds in a detailed manner. He showed from his earliest childhood an intense love of natural history. It was not until 1914 that his first work, British Warblers, illustrated by Henrik Grönvold, was fully published, having been issued in parts since 1907. Continually working on the theory of territory, he published Territory in Bird Life, illustrated by George Edward Lodge and Henrik Grönvold, in 1920 (a reissue in 1948 had an introduction by Julian Huxley and James Fisher), followed by An Introduction to the Study of Bird Behaviour, Nature of a Bird's World and lastly A Waterhen's Worlds, in 1940. GEORGE EDWARD LODGE (1860 – 1954) was a British illustrator of birds and an authority on falconry. He was educated at home, and became an accomplished taxidermist. He travelled abroad in search of birds and sport, visiting Norway, Sweden, the West Indies and the United States. One of the earliest works for which he made illustrations was Lord Lilford's Birds of Northamptonshire, in conjunction with Archibald Thorburn, whose skill as a bird-artist Lodge greatly admired. This admiration was returned as in the early 1910s Thorburn was approached by a representative of the New Zealand Government regarding a commission to provide plates for a proposed book of New Zealand native birds. Thorburn recommended Lodge for the commission and in 1913 Lodge began work. He studied bird skin specimens from a number of different collections in Britain including the Natural History Museum and eventually supplied 90 plates to the Wildlife Service of the Department of Internal Affairs of New Zealand. Lodge was also an expert at woodcuts, in which craft he contributed to books by Henry Seebohm and Badminton Library. His illustrations appeared in Beebe's Monograph of the Pheasants and Eliot Howard's Introduction to Bird Behaviour (1929) (offered here).
