Description
THE FIRST MONOGRAPH DEVOTED TO A CELEBRATED WORK OF ART, ON DONATELLO'S STATUE OF ST. GEORGE Florence, Giorgio Marescotti, 1584. 8vo (15.5 x 10.2 cm), 106 pp., [3] ff., without final blank. Bound in calf, red morocco title label on spine with title gilt. Light foxing on title and scattered leaves, generally in margin and some negligible soiling on a single leaf; generally very good. Rare first edition of the earliest monograph devoted to a specific work of art (Schlosser, p. 391), an enthusiastic appraisal of Donatello's statue of St. George commissioned for Orsan Michele and now in the Bargello: "The treatise on Donatello's sculpture is an important document on the theory of art in Florence in the 16th century" (DA). Blunt groups Bocchi in the company of such pro-Mannerist followers of Vasari as Borghini and Vincenzo Danti, and Bocchi accordingly esteems Donatello as a precursor to Michelangelo. Vasari also treats the statue in his life of the artist (I.1.330 ff.) St. George was commissioned by the Guild of Armourers in part as an advertisement for their wares. As the saint was traditionally pictured as a knight in armor, it hampered Donatello's ability to depict limbs and movement. This the sculptor nonetheless did achieve--and brilliantly--by means of the pose: St. George is shown balanced on the balls of his feet. Blunt further characterizes Bocchi's treatise generally as "typical of Florentine Mannerism in the stress which it lays on movement as the greatest source of beauty in the human figure" (p. 102). Bocchi (1548-1613/18?) also wrote what is generally regarded as the first Renaissance guide to Florence, Le bellezze di Firenze (1591). * Hollis ANN5761/bks; Cicognara 3484; not in Adams; Menchi in DBI XI.72-4; Dictionary of Art IV.198 (Bocchi); Blunt, Artistic Theory in Italy, 2nd ed., pp. 101-2; Komorowski, "Donatello's St. George in Sixteenth Century Commentary by Francesco Bocchi: Some Problems in Renaissance Theory", Ars Auro Prior: Studia Ioanni Bia?ostocki sexagenario dicata (Warsaw 1981), pp. 61-6.

EIGHTEEN JEWISH SONGS ABOUT LIFE IN PALESTINE AND THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS - Including Purim, Chanukah, Simchat Torah, and the Sabbath. B/W Illustrations by ARTHUR BRYKS- a Polish Hasidic Painter and Illustrator.THIS BOOK done in 1935 was to encourage the children of Holland (and their parents) to make Aliyah. On page 1 - there is a Photographic Sepia Print Tipped-In of 2 boys who made Aliyah. One could imagine the urgency in 1935 to reach Palestine - away from ominous times in wretched Europe. I would imagine not many of these books survived unless one did leave. The songs are by various composers - one of which is Chaim N. Bialik, a famous Jewish Poet who wrote in Hebrew and Yiddish. He is known as the National Poet of Israel. (He is actress Mayim Bialik's uncle.) The lyrics are in Dutch with a Hebrew translation. Music edited by Austrian-Jewish composer Paul Pella. Introduction by A. Schwimmer-Vigeveno.The book is 4to oblong with a blue cloth spine and a Beautiful and Striking Color Pictorial Label. The book is in very good conditon - clean & tight - with only a few small spots at the top of the back cover near spine. There is a water drop at the very top also near spine - and the top of spine shows light water staining. Still a VG copy. A SCARCE BOOK

Generally very good overall with typical handling wear, toning, and occasional edge wear.
Description
New York: Pace & Handy; Handy Brothers Music Co.; W. C. Handy; Richmond-Robbins; Robbins Music Corp.; and others, 1958. Approximately 29 pieces of sheet music together with a 32-page Blues folio. Folio format. Generally very good overall with typical handling wear, toning, and occasional edge wear.. A substantial accumulation of blues sheets centered on the work of W. C. Handy (1873–1958), the composer widely known as the “Father of the Blues.” Spanning more than four decades of publication and assembled over many decades by a Chicago-area collector, the group documents both the popularity of Handy’s compositions and the central role his publishing enterprises played in bringing blues music into the American popular music mainstream. Pace & Handy, the pioneering Black-owned music publishing firm founded in 1912 by Handy and businessman Harry H. Pace, published many of the early issues. The company was among the first African American–owned music publishers to achieve national commercial success, issuing blues compositions at a time when Black musicians rarely controlled the publication or profits of their work. Pace & Handy helped establish the blues as a recognized commercial genre and laid the groundwork for later Black-owned enterprises in music and recording. The group includes several of Handy’s most famous compositions, among them “Beale Street Blues,” “Yellow Dog Blues,” and “The Memphis Blues.” At the center of the collection are numerous editions and arrangements of “St. Louis Blues,” Handy’s most celebrated composition and one of the most widely recorded songs in American music history. First published in 1914, it appeared over the following decades in numerous new arrangements and promotional editions reflecting performances by major bandleaders and orchestras such as Paul Whiteman, Earl Hines, Tex Beneke, and Erskine Hawkins, as well as theatrical and film adaptations including the revue Blackbirds of 1928 and the later 1958 motion picture St. Louis Blues. Description
Paris: Gazette des beaux-arts, 1902. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 39 cm; viii, 290 pages, and 21 leaves of plates. Numerous illustrations in text. Edition limited to 260 copies, this copy out of series, "exemplaire spécialment tiré pour Monsieur Charles Éphrussi." Bound in recent half calf, polished, over pebbled cloth-covered boards. Gilt-tooled borders, ornaments and title. Gauffered edges. Few superficial chips along joints and at spine ends. Plates variously foxed, mostly in margins. Text clean. Vast--and vastly influential--study of the iconography of Petrarch's song cycles, The Triumphs (Trionfi) and the song book of "scattered rhymes" (Il Canzoniere). The essay was a collaboration between the art historian Eugène Müntz and the wealthy collector and amateur scholar Victor Masséna. The result is a luxurious book that was indispensible in the formation of the discipline of iconology. This copy is out of series, and in place of the justification page is a printed dedication to Charles Ephrussi, the patron of arts who effectively launched Renoir's career, and was a great supporter of Degas, Manet, Monet, and Proust.

Norma, in two acts to a libretto by Felice Romani after Alexandre Soumet's verse tragedy Norma, was first performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on 26 December 1831. "With Norma, the most ambitious of his operas, Bellini created a work of extraordinary lyrical and dramatic beauty. Through melody of a kind that had not been written before or has been since, the structure of the music expresses a tragedy that is virtually of epic scale." Galatopoulos: Bellini, p. 242. Bellini was "a leading figure in early 19th-century opera, noted for his expressive melodies and sensitive approach to text-setting. ... Norma has always been revered above other Italian operas of the period ... The title role is one of the most taxing and wide-ranging parts in the entire repertory: a noble character whose tragedy lies in her fatal love for an enemy of her people. The many different aspects of Norma's temperament are marvellously drawn by Bellini, not only in the aria 'Casta diva', but also in the superb duets with Adalgisa and Pollione, and in the ensemble in the finale of Act 2, where Bellini reaches his peak as a musical dramatist." Simon Maguire and Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online.
