Description
49 folding leaves. Two kwŏn in one vol. Small folio (323 x 215 mm.), orig. patterned yellow-brown wrappers, new stitching. [Korea]: Preface dated 1741. First edition of this rare late-Chosŏn Confucian manual on ethical cultivation and daily conduct, by Yi Sang-jŏng (1710-81), a scholar and government official known for his moral integrity, learning, and devotion to Confucian principles in state administration. He held a number of important posts including Chief Censor, Minister of Rites, and Senior Advisor to the king. Structured in two sections, the text first presents 24 articles on proper daily behavior — addressing decorum in speech, demeanor, attire, eating, and self-restraint — followed by 20 articles that draw upon the sayings and deeds of Confucian sages, culminating with one of the most important Korean Neo-Confucian philosophers, Yi Hwang. Drawing from more than 69 classical sources but enriched by Yi Sang-jŏng’s own commentary, Cheyangnok links mastery of daily etiquette with inner cultivation and higher philosophical attainment. As a paradigmatic work of Joseon elite education, Cheyangnok offers a unique window into 18th-century Korean Confucianism and remains a resource for understanding the period’s synthesis of ethical theory, pedagogy, and everyday life. Fine copy.

Description
Title within ruled border. 1 p.l., 20 pp., one blank leaf. Small 4to, attractive antique calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: S. & B. G[riffin] for N. Brooke, 1674. Second edition. This work has been attributed by many to Sir John Pettus (ca. 1613-85), natural philosopher and politician, but this is probably erroneous. Sainfoin is a highly nutritious plant, which served as an important forage for livestock. “A most interesting little book…whoever wrote it knew what he was talking about, and had evidently made himself thoroughly acquainted with the peculiarities and value of the plant as a farmer’s crop.”–McDonald, Agricultural Writers…1200-1800, p. 110. Fine copy. ❧ Henrey, I, pp. 192-93–“An interesting little tract” & no. 336.

With a New Introductory Essay entitled "Will We Finally Apply Nuremberg's Lessons?" by Benjamin Ferencz, Chief Prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial, author of Defining International Aggression: The Search for World Peace (1975), Adjunct Professor of International Law, Pace University and founder of the Pace Peace Center. ISBN-13: 9781616190330; ISBN-10: 1616190337. Paperback. New. $29.95 * A title in The Lawbook Exchange series, Foundations of the Laws of War. Originally published three years before the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 1973, this important book is not a polemic, but a sober account of the Vietnam conflict from the perspective of international law. Framed in reference to the Nuremberg Trials that followed the Second World War, it describes problems the United States may have to face due to its involvement in the Vietnam conflict. After presenting a general history of war crimes and an account of the Nuremberg Trials, Taylor turns his attention to Vietnam. He also examines parallels between actions committed by American troops during the then-recent My Lai Massacre of 1968 and Hitler's SS in Nazi-occupied Europe. Telford Taylor [1908-1998] was chief counsel for the prosecution at the Nuremberg Trials. Later Professor of Law at Columbia University, he was a vigorous opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy and an outspoken critic of U.S. actions during the Vietnam War. His books include Sword and Swastika: Generals and Nazis in the Third Reich (1952), Grand Inquest: The Story of Congressional Investigations (1955) and The Anatomy of the Nuremberg Trials: A Personal Memoir (1992).
