Description
THE COLLECTED WORKS OF GALILEO Bologna, HH. del Dozza, 1655-56. 2 volumes, large 4to. Vol. I: [28], 48 p.; 48 p.; [8], 160 p.; [4], 68 p.; 127 p.; [4], 264 p.; 43 p., including allegorical frontispiece signed Stefano della Bella, Villamoena portrait of Galileo, and folding engraved plate of military compass. Vol. II: [4], 41, [1] p., [1] f., 43-60 p.; [16], 104, [4], 105-156 p.; 48 p.; [8], 179, [1] p.; [51]-106 p.; [101]-126 p.; [8], 238 (i.e. 242), [6] p. Numerous woodcut initials and astronomical and mathematical diagrams. Vol. II includes a cancelled leaf, paginated 99-100 and with text from the "Macchie solari" on recto and the beginning of the "Risposta del Sig. Alfonso Antonini di Udine" on verso, inserted between the Castelli and Grienberger letters on the 1618 comet, and with a large section of the lower left corner cleanly cut out, probably intentionally. Bound in contemporary vellum, title written in ink on spine and on lower edges; usual mild discoloration and light foxing on scattered leaves; several quires browned as usual. Generally a fine, wide-margined and fresh copy. First collected edition of Galileo's works, appearing only a year after his death and of great interest for his 17th-century reception. This was the edition in which Newton and later eminent scientists read their Galileo. Included here are not only most of the seminal pieces written and published over a lifetime, but additional publications and letters by both supporters and antagonists. Together in one work they offer a veritable panorama of scientific activity in Italy during the first half of the seventeenth century, and are critical for the history of the formation of Galileo's text. The Opere contains many unpublished or little-known items provided to the editors by Vincenzo Viviani, Galileo's friend and disciple. Among them are a number of Galileo's hitherto unpublished letters and experiments and the La Bilancetta, his first scientific work, written in 1586. Both the Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo ("Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems") and the letter to Christina di Lorena were on the Index of Prohibited Books when the Opere was published, so they are not included. A contemporary hand noted on the final flyleaf of Vol. 2, "La lettura de discorsi legati insieme è interdetta" ("The reading of the discourses bound together is forbidden.").Volume I includes a dedication, other preliminary material, and Galileo's first publication, Le operationi del compasso geometrico e militare ("The Mathematical and Geometrical Compass"), issued in 1606, and related works ([28], 48 p.; 48 p.; [8], 160 p.); Discorso ... intorno alle cose, che stanno sù l'acqua, ò che in quella si muovono ("The Discourse on Floating Bodies"), first published in 1612, and related works ([4], 68 p.; 127 p.; [4], 264 p.); and Della scienza mecanica ("On the Science of Mechanics and its Uses"), based on lectures on statics and simple machines delivered in Padua in the 1590s, and La Bilancetta (43 p.).Volume II includes the Sidereus Nuncius ("The Starry Messenger"), originally published in 1610, in which Galileo describes his astronomical discoveries using a telescope ([4], 41, [1] p., [1] f., 43-60 p.); the three letters on sunspots from 1613 ([16], 104, [4], 105-156 p.); texts related to the comet of 1618 (48 p. and [51]-106, [101]-126 p.); Il Saggiatore ("The Assayer"), Galileo's "scientific manifesto" from 1623 ([8], 179, [1] p.); and his last work, Discorsi e dimonstrationi matematiche ("Mathematical Discourses on the Two New Sciences"), first issued in 1638 ([8], 238 (i.e. 242), [6] p.). * Cinti 132; Riccardi I.518-19.

1899. First Edition. GARDINER, Samuel Rawson. Oliver Cromwell. London: Goupil, 1899. Folio (10 by 13 inches), contemporary full tan morocco gilt, raised bands, top edges gilt, uncut. $3000.Limited edition of Gardiner’s highly regarded biography of Cromwell, one of 1475 wide-margined copies printed on fine paper, illustrated with lithographed color frontispiece portrait, 44 engravings (most full-page) and manuscript facsimiles, handsomely bound by Bumpus. When Scotland began to rise up against Charles I in 1637, Oliver Cromwell was poised at the center of this turning point in British history. Soldier and brilliant strategist, controversial politician and statesman, Cromwell would ultimately be sworn in as Lord Protector in December 1653. Though his is a checkered legacy, Cromwell nevertheless made it possible ""for the first time in three and half centuries, for Jews to live, trade and worship openly… in the City of London"" (Schama II:235). Prior to Cromwell, ""no private person… had taken power to rule a great European kingdom, no subject had taken it upon himself to sit in judgment on his lawful sovereign, condemn him with the formality of a lawful process, and publicly execute him as a criminal. In a country governed by custom, precedent and the common law, Cromwell completely changed the ancient frame of government, reforming Parliament and imposing a written constitution"" (Cannon, 263). Issued same year as a limited edition of 350 copies printed on Japanese vellum. This is an out of series copy, marked ""Presentation Copy"" for the limitation number. CBEL III:911. Bookplate.Scattered foxing. Beautifully bound.

Description
London: Robt. Riviere & Son, 1910. A fine example. Square sixteenmo (5 1/16 x 3 15/16 inches; 129 x 100 mm.). 46, [2, blank] pp. Title-page and initial letters printed in red and black. Handsomely bound ca. 1910 by Rivière & Son, stamp-signed in gilt on lower turn-in. Full dark blue crushed levant morocco, covers bordered in gilt surrounding an ornate floral design stamped in gilt, each with twelve inlaid red morocco flowers, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, cream paper liners and end-leaves, top edge gilt. Neat ink inscription on front free end-paper and a small gold bookplate. Shelley's poem, The Sensitive Plant, is a beautiful and tragic poem commemorating the brevity of life and immortality of cyclical nature. Written after death of his son, while Percy and Mary Shelley struggled with their grief in Pisa, the poem consists of four stanzas with three sections charting the change of seasons. It is set in a garden bursting with blooms, but highlights the sensitive plant-a mimosa-with its humble leafy foliage. Human will is nothing in the face of the impartial power of nature and time. First published in Prometheus Unbound and Other Poems (1820), here it has been reproduced with a delicate binding to match its subject. "For the Sensitive Plant has no bright flower; Radiance and odour are not its dower; It loves, even like Love, its deep heart is full, It desires what it has not, the Beautiful!" "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned.

1903. [DRAWING TEXTBOOK] ASAI CHU^, artist. JIZAIGA KYO^KASHO Dai Roppen. To^kyo^, Kinko^do^ Shoseki, Meiji 36 [1903]. 1st printing. Oblong 8vo., wrappers. 18.6 x 26.5 cm. This sixth volume of the series A TEXTBOOK OF FREE SKETCHING contains 6 sheets of color woodcut reproducing watercolor sketches by Asai Chu^ and meant to serve as a guide for students in their drawing classes. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho^, had commissioned Asai Chu^, one of the foremost artists and educators of the day to create a series of such handbooks for schools. This brief notice is not the place to expand but it should be noted that this series represents an important milestone in the see-saw cultural battle being waged between artistic traditionalists and "modern" Western-style artists. The fact that the Asai Chu^ strove to familiarize students with the use of the pencil (and in this case Western watercolor) rather than the traditional brush is significant in that context. Asai, himself, actually, though an accomplished Western-style oil painter who had studied in France was also a skilled traditional painter and a top-rank graphic designer, as well. It appears he believed in giving students all the tools, all the media, available for their expression. His various textbook series are rightly famous though almost never found, being fragile to begin with and meant to be used by students. This volume is in good condition - the pages are loose and the images have a degree of foxing throughout.
