Description
London: Reeves & Turner, 1886. Second edition. Fine. Two octavo volumes (7 1/4 x 4 11/16 inches; 184 x 119 mm.), 572; 580 pp. A spectacular ca. 1920 Cosway-Style binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for the J.L. Hudson Company (stamp-signed in gilt on rear turn-in). Full red crushed levant morocco over beveled boards, covers lavishly gilt in the Art Nouveau style, with inlaid green and light brown morocco inlays. The first volume with a central green morocco medallion with Percy Bysshe Shelley's initials in gilt. The second volume with a central green morocco medallion with the phrase "Pansies/Let My Flowers Be" stamped in gilt. Spines with five raised bands elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, four of which have onlaid green morocco flowers. Double gilt-ruled board edges and elaborate gilt turn-ins, dark blue watered silk liners and endleaves, all edges gilt and gauffered. The first volume with a front doublure of dark blue crushed levant morocco, multi-ruled in gilt. In the center is a superb gilt framed, hand-painted portrait miniature (3 x 2 3/8 inches; 76 x 60 mm.) of Percy Bysshe Shelley. The miniature is surrounded by a rectangular recessed frame with eight onlaid red morocco flowers and twenty-four onlaid beige morocco leaves. The front and back joints of both volumes have been expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Housed in a custom-made, felt lined half red morocco (with a red felt divider) clamshell case, two spines paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments. A wonderful early Sangorski & Sutcliffe Cosway-style binding. The miniature is of exceptional quality and is quite possibly the work of Miss C.B. Currie. The J. L. Hudson Company (commonly known simply as Hudson's) was a retail department store chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Hudson's flagship store, on Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit was constructed beginning in 1911, with additions throughout the years, before being 'completed' in 1946. The building was named after the company's founder Joseph Lowthian Hudson, and was demolished on October 24, 1998. In 1961 it was the tallest department store in the world, and, at one time, claimed to be the second-largest department store, after Macy's, in the United States, by square footage. The Grand River Avenue Book Shop was on the Mezzanine floor. The story of the Sangorski & Sutcliffe Bindery reads like something out of a novel-when two of Douglas Cockrell's talented apprentices, Frances Sangorski and George Sutcliffe, were laid off during an economic downturn they began working out of an attic. Eventually their bindery would be famous for its intricate multicolored leather inlays and elaborate gold and jeweled bindings. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse, director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie (1849-1940). As the style grew in popularity, other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine.

Description
Florence: Gaetano Cambiagi, 1789. Engraved frontispiece, 2 folding, 4 full-page, and 22 double-page typographic tables, 10 folding engraved plates. Contemporary stiff vellum, edges marbled blue and red, old bookseller label on the pastedown. In excellent condition. First edition of this groundbreaking guide to psychiatric institutional reform. The text lists the rules and regulations for the recently established Florentine Santa Bonifacio hospital for the mentally ill as well as the reformed Santa Maria Novella, both of which reflected the new standards of care put in place by Vincenzo Chiarugi at the direction of Emperor Leopold II. These statutes demanded detailed patient records, hygienic conditions, and padded rooms and furniture, and they restricted use of force on patients. Chiarugi’s “humane administration with regard to the insane marked the first application of the principles of treatment that form the basis of modern psychiatry.” (Norman) Included at the end are dozens of blank forms that the hospitals used to consolidate patient information and tables showing the quantitative efficacy of the system. The plates show the hospitals’ grounds and facilities. Norman 474; Garrison-Morton 4920.2.

Description
Houdini is known as one of the greatest escapologists and stunt performers, as well as a skeptic and investigator of spiritualists. He was also a film producer and actor. The illusion of mind reading intrigued Houdini. Both he and Zancig had little to do with each other though both belonged to the Society of American Magicians. Houdini doubted mentalist Julius Zancig's ability to self proclaimed ability. In this three piece correspondence Zancig reveals his trick. This correspondence began with Zancig's Aug. 8 TLS to Houdini on "How to Thought Picture... here is the secret Harry nd (sic) no one lese (sic) has it but you up to this time...you promise not to Devulge (sic) it to any one here..." Houdini replied first with a three page holograph letter including bold capital letters detailing what he did not understand about Zancig's trick. The letter is not in is hand but is most likely a draft of the typed letter he sent to Zancig. The typed letter included in this group varies from the hand written letter and is very likely a copy of the typed letter Houdini did send. This copy contains a hexagram drawing in ink appearing to be in Houdini's hand. He never believed the mind reading illusion had anything to do with a special mental ability. From the Aug. 17 holograph letter "I have gone over the Thought Picture sheet very carefully but must confess that it is not clear to my mind...." The letter ends on the second page, with his name then crossed out and the letter continued onto a third page . "I really cannot put these things together and would appreciate your making it clearer--With best regards, yours, Houdini." This first closing and signature are struck out and followed on the last page with, "Do you really attempt to reproduce what is drawn by members of the audience, or confine your reproductions to your prepared list? If so what about identification by audience...." At this point it is signed on his behalf, "With best regards, Houdini." The letter while not in Houdini's hand expresses his views about Zancig. It is possible the letter was dictated as a first draft then redrafted into the typed copy here. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle declared in 1923 that Julius Zancig and his wife were genuine telepathists, contradicting Houdini''s belief that the Zancigs' "mind-reading performances required no supernatural powers. Houdini purchased the explanation of the act from Julius Zancig in order to demonstrate the truth of his view to posterity." (Milbourne Christopher, Houdini, New York, 1969, p. 177)." Harry Houdini forever changed the world of magic and escapes.

Description
1920. A group of 5 spectroheliograph silver gelatin prints of the sun. Royal Observatory, Greenwich and Kodaikanal, India, 1906-1920. Printed c1920, mailed 1946. 2 prints approximately 7 ½" x 6", 3 prints approximately 6 1/2" x 5 ¾". All prints with manuscript captions on verso (in an unknown hand), 3 prints state that the photos were taken by J. Evershed, the others credited to the Royal Observatory. Some general edgewear, toning, prints lightly curled. Original envelope with a return address of the General Electric address in New York. The spectroheliograph is an instrument designed to photograph the sun in a single, precisely isolated wavelength of light, revealing solar features that are entirely invisible in broadband white-light photography. Invented independently by George Ellery Hale and Henri Deslandres in 1890–1891, it works by combining a spectroscope (which disperses sunlight into its component wavelengths) with a photographic apparatus arranged so that only a narrow band of the resulting spectrum falls on the photographic plate. By selecting the wavelength corresponding to a specific atomic transition, typically the hydrogen-alpha line at 656 nanometers or the calcium H and K lines, the instrument renders visible the chromosphere, the layer of the solar atmosphere lying above the photosphere, along with its associated structures: prominences, filaments, plages, and the magnetic network surrounding sunspot groups. A mechanical scanning mechanism moves both the entrance slit and the photographic plate in tandem across the solar disk, building up a complete image one narrow strip at a time. The result is a photograph of the sun as it exists at a single atmospheric depth defined by the chosen wavelength; a cross-section through the solar atmosphere unavailable by any other means, and the primary tool by which early twentieth-century solar physicists mapped the relationship between chromospheric structure and the magnetic activity cycles that govern solar behavior. John Evershed (1864-1956) was an English astronomer who made pioneering observations of solar phenomena at the Kodaikanal Observatory in southern India. In 1909, he discovered radial motions in sunspots (gas flows moving outward from the center of sunspots along their surfaces) a phenomenon now known as the Evershed Effect. This discovery fundamentally advanced understanding of sunspot dynamics and solar magnetic fields. The spectroheliograph, invented by George Ellery Hale in 1890, allowed astronomers to photograph the sun in specific wavelengths of light, revealing features invisible to ordinary photography. These prints represent the golden age of solar observation, when British astronomers working at imperial observatories in India contributed significantly to heliophysics. The Kodaikanal Observatory, established in 1899, maintained one of the longest continuous records of solar observation in the world. One of the Royal Observatory photos depicts sunspots, those darker, cooler regions on the solar surface caused by intense magnetic activity.

Description
1957. Taylor, Valerie. Whisper Their Love. Weirauch, Anna Elisabet. Of Love Forbidden. Salem, Randy. Chris. Michaels, Rea. Cloak of Evil. These mid-twentieth century lesbian pulp novels document women-authored representations of same-sex relationships within a commercial publishing field largely dominated by male writers using pseudonyms. Issued between 1957 and 1968, these works provide primary evidence of how lesbian identity, desire, and social constraint were articulated in mass-market fiction during a period when homosexuality remained criminalized and widely pathologized in the United States. Valerie Taylor, writing under the name Velma Nacella Young, contributed fiction grounded in lesbian experience and later became associated with early homophile activism, while Anna Elisabet Weirauch's work, first published in German as Der Skorpion, stands among the earliest extended literary treatments of lesbian identity in modern European literature and circulated in English translation within American paperback markets. Additional authors in the group explore themes of secrecy, emotional attachment, and social marginalization, with several titles aligning with evaluative frameworks established by Barbara Grier identifying works with sustained lesbian characters and plotlines. Weirauch, Anna Elisabet. Of Love Forbidden. Greenwich, Conn: Crest Book, 1964. Third edition. Mass-market paperback. Salem, Randy (pen name of Pat Perdue). Chris. New York: Softcover Library, 1968. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Michaels, Rea. Cloak of Evil. New York: Lancer Books, 1965. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Taylor, Valerie (pen name of Velma Nacella Young). Whisper Their Love. Greenwich, Conn.: Fawcett Publications, 1957. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Group of four paperback volumes spanning 1957 to 1968, each measuring approximately 4.25 x 7 inches and generally ranging between 120 and 200 pages. Illustrated covers employ mid-century pulp visual conventions, frequently depicting women in intimate or suggestive poses paired with promotional language such as "Haunting story of a girl caught in the web of an unnatural love" (Of Love Forbidden) and "Theirs was the kind of love they dared not show the world" (Whisper Their Love). Narrative content includes first lesbian relationships, extended romantic entanglements, and urban social settings such as Greenwich Village, as in Chris, which centers a multi-year relationship disrupted by a new encounter, described as "the strangest love-triangle of them all." Other titles emphasize transgressive desire and gendered power dynamics, as in Cloak of Evil, where same-sex relationships are positioned alongside broader themes of control and emotional dependence. These novels circulated within a rapidly expanding postwar paperback industry that enabled the distribution of controversial subject matter through inexpensive, widely available formats, even as publishers framed lesbian content through sensationalized marketing language to navigate obscenity restrictions and consumer expectations. Female-authored works within this genre introduced perspectives grounded in lived experience and identity exploration, contributing to the formation of lesbian literary traditions that would later intersect with feminist and gay liberation movements of the late 1960s and 1970s. Clean covers and interiors with tight textblocks; light handling wear consistent with age; overall good to very good condition. The grouping offers a focused record of women-authored lesbian fiction within mid-century print culture and supports research into sexuality, censorship, and mass-market publishing.

New York: National American Woman Suffrage Association, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. First Edition. Hardcover. This rare first edition of the women's rights handbook that would become known as "The Blue Book," with that title and the editors' names added to later, revised editions, collects eight popular booklets into one handy, nearly pocket-size volume, "designed especially for the convenience of suffrage speakers and writers and for the use of debaters and libraries." The editors of The Blue Book were Frances Maule Björkman (1879-1966), a queer, socialist member of Heterodoxy, a Greenwich Village feminist debating club, and Annie Gertrude Webb Porritt (1861-1932), an editor of the National American Woman Suffrage Association's Publishing Company who followed Alice Paul after her expulsion from NAWSA, joining Paul at the more 'militant' National Woman's Party, and after the passage of the 19th Amendment, becoming a birth control activist, through her work at the American Birth Control League and as managing editor of the Birth Control Review. The full contents of this first edition of "The Blue Book" include: "Why Women Should Vote," by American settlement activist Jane Addams; "Objections Answered: Why Should Women Vote?" by journalist and human rights activist Alice Stone Blackwell; "Where Women Vote," by Björkman; "Do You Know," by once and future NAWSA President Carrie Chapman Catt; "A Comon-Sense View of Woman Suffrage," by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Jesse Lynch Williams; "Why Women Want to Vote," by Björkman; "Measuring Up Equal Suffrage," by later head of the United States Committee on Public Information George Creel and social reformer Judge Ben B. Heavy scattered rubbing to cloth, especially at rear, with sunning to blank spine and moderate rubbing to edges and extremities. Rear hinge a touch tender; binding remains sound, with occasional hints of spine visible at gutters of signatures. $2.25 price per dozen copies amended in pencil to $2.50 at verso of title page. Occasional spot of foxing, thumbing, or smudge to pages throughout, else unmarked. An admittedly worn but overall well preserved first edition of this significant book in the history of women, voting rights, and the United States of America.

Description
Paris: J Guerin, 1746. Third Enlarged Edition. First Illustrated.. Full contemporary calf.. Very good with modest wear to the binding.. 8vo, xii, [1] - 78, [2 - privilege] pp. + 3 engraved folding plates of machinery; title vignette. An effort on behalf of the author to overcome the resistance of craft guilds to the introduction of rolled lead sheeting for roofing and gutters. Rolled lead had been in use in the UK since 1670. But the first mill to produce this product in France was established only in 1729 and met with considerable resistance from the guild of plumbers under whom cast lead roofing was a protected craft assignment. This pamphlet defends the advantages of rolled sheet versus cast lead and also goes into a good explanation of manufacturing techniques (all illustrated). This edition (it was first pub'd. in 1731) is the first to have the illustrations. The engraver of the plates is identified as Dheulland, presumably G Dheulland who worked on Belidor's massive hydraulic architecture book. This copy also has bound in a 19th century tariff sheet for various lead pipe and zinc laminated pipe.

Description
[Hartford?, 1844. Inscribed, lower center: "SILAS WRIGHT. / Entered according to Act of congress, in the year 1844, by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, in the Clerk's Office of the District of Connecticut." Light foxing, else Very Good. 12-1/4" x 16-1/4" Lithographed by the Kelloggs of Hartford. The Philadelphia Print Shop's web site explains, "From about 1830 through the rest of the century, the Kellogg brothers, in various partnerships among themselves and with others, published popular lithographs in Hartford, Connecticut. These firms issued the second largest number of decorative prints intended for the American public, surpassed only by their New York rivals, Currier & Ives, producing thousands of lithographs, most hand-colored, which ended up in the homes and work places of Americans. The Kelloggs' prints were typical of the popular print style: colorful, affordable and with images covering much the same range of topics as those of their New York counterpart.

London: Heinemann Educational Books Ltd.. Very Good-. 1979. First Edition. Softcover. [some visible wear along edges and spine, short diagonal crease at top corner of rear cover]. Trade PB INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the playwright on the half-title page: "for ___ & _____ / with love from / Caroline / Christmas 1981." (Also laid in is a Christmas card from the playwright, with a brief note to the recipients.) "A free adaptation of Aristophanes' comedy which follows the spirit of the original but is far more than a mere translation. It is a light-hearted play with plenty of action, humour, and a happy ending! The cast can number as few as forty or as many as a hundred, and there are opportunities for musicians, dancers and gymnasts to do their star turns. The costumes and props are equally flexible; they can be improvised very simply or be spectacularly elaborate. The play provides plenty of scope for the imagination and is great fun, both for the cast and the audience." Signed by Author .

New York: E.P. Dutton. Very Good+. 1979. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. [modest edgewear to covers, light soiling to bottom edge, slight bending at lower corners of last few pages and very slight curling in rear cover]. Trade PB A groundbreaking work in TV history, thsi was the "first comprehensive work to consider films that have been made especially for the small screen, either as TV movies or as series segments." Quite blatantly modeled after Andrew Sarris's "The American Cinema," it places the 280 directors discussed into categories based on "their importance, their fame, and their achievement." The upper echelon -- equivalent to Sarris's "Pantheon" -- is dubbed "Kings of the Stardust Ballroom," and the lesser categories include "I Also Do the Catering" and "How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?". (My favorite is "Elephants' Graveyard," which focuses on the television work of once-prominent feature film directors such as Jack Arnold, John Brahm, Stuart Heisler, Tay Garnett, Jacques Tourneur, etc.) It may be hard to comprehend in the age of ImDB and Wikipedia, but back in the 1970s it was next to impossible to even nail down basic credits for individual TV directors, and in that respect alone this is probably a book that launched hundreds of "subjects for further research." .

Description
Jackson, Mississippi: University Press of Mississippi, 1998. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 6x1x9. Still in shrink wrap. Jacket spine faded. 1998 Hard Cover. 312 pp. Conversations with Erskine Caldwell contains thirty-two interviews with this major writer, who during his long career enjoyed both the celebrity and the controversy that his books generated. These collected interviews include what is apparently his first, given in 1929 before the publication of The Bastard, to one of the very last, given only weeks before his death in April 1987. Caldwell was a lifelong outspoken opponent of censorship and an early advocate of racial equality. His ideas were reflected in a number of important interviews and portraits, often in newspapers or small journals not easily obtained today. In his later years he became a kind of elder statesman, celebrated as the last of that extraordinary generation of American writers which included Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Wolfe, and Steinbeck and which changed the face of American literature.
