Description
1946. HEARTFIELD'S PHOTOMONTAGE "TURNED THE BOOK COVER INTO A POLITICAL INSTUMENT" HEARTFIELD, John. A collection of 80 volumes, all of which are preserved in the original publisher's bindings designed and illustrated by John Heartfield. Various sizes, Berlin,Vienna, Paris, London, 1922-1946. A comprehensive collection of material designed by John Heartfield most of which were designed for his brother's firm, Malik-Verlag, for works by such authors as Upton Sinclair and Ilya Ehrenburg. Heartfield placed his photomontage images on the front and back of the jackets to instantly convey the books' contents. This was a dramatic departure from the plain jackets of the period. According to the great designer and typographer Jan Tschichold, Heartfield was the inventor of photomontage book covers; furthermore, his designs for Malik were the first of their kind (Das neue Typographie, 1928, p. 228). "Today it is almost forgotten that [Heartfield] tested the artistic-political impact of photomontage on a wallflower that nobody took notice of, the dust jacket. Photomontage appeared for the first time on this slim, oblong, double page as a genre integrating the graphic, literary, and agitational means of expression into something new. The works, created mostly for the Malik publishing company in the twenties, were a bold experiment: Heartfield made the dust jacket 'active,' and let it 'fight' for the author. It is hardly imaginable today what a fascinating contrast those miniature montages were in contrast to the usual, sober or whimsical book covers" (Lilly Becher, quoted by Pachnicke). In addition to a most of the important Malik covers, including two with the censored versions, the collection also includes Deutschland Deutschland Ueber Alles, which is probably his best known work, and a copy of Und Sie Begwegt Sich Doch with the extremely rare dust jacket, and also one of the iconic issues of AIZ. A complete list of the collection is available upon request.

Description
1937. Takiguchi Shūzō 瀧口修造, author and Abe Yoshifumi (also Yoshibumi, Abe Nobuya) 阿部芳文 (阿部展也), artist. Yōsei no Kyori 妖精の距離 [Fairy’s Distance]. Showa 12 [1937]. Tokyo: Shunchōkai 春鳥会. 30.3 x 24.5cm folio of poetry with a magnifying glass design on the front cover. Three single sheets 30.2 x 24.2cm: one with title page, one with an index and one with a colophon on one side and limitation on the other. 12 folded sheets 30.2 x 24.2cm closed, each with a poem on the right in Japanese facing an Abstract/Surrealist print on the left. I have consulted with several individuals with considerable expertise in the field, in both the trade and academia. We all agree that the prints are probably not sekiban 石版 (stone litho), but we are uncertain of the process. What is clear is that this is one of the rarest avant garde books of that era in Japan. Yōsei no Kyori 妖精の距離 [Fairy’s Distance] is 61 of 100 copies and the author’s first poetry art book. Takiguchi Shūzō 瀧口修造 (1903 - 1979) was a Japanese artist, poet and collector born in Toyama prefecture and is considered the most important surrealist in Japan. He was influenced by European artists, such as André Breton, eventually translating one of his works from French into Japanese in 1930. Takiguchi is credited with starting the avant-garde group Jikken Kobo 実験工房 (Experimental Workshop) in 1951. He participated in and organized the Japanese pavilion for the 1958 Venice Biennale, which is when he was able to meet his European counterparts, such as Breton, Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp. He went on to collaborate with Jasper Johns and Joan Miro. His work is held worldwide, including at MOMA in New York City and The British Museum in London. The artwork is by Abe Yoshifumi (also Yoshibumi, Abe Nobuya) 阿部芳文 (阿部展也), (1913-1971) a Niigata Prefecture-born artist, painter, photographer and graphic designer. His work has been exhibited internationally, in group and solo exhibitions in Italy and at MOMA in NYC. 1 copy found in WorldCat held at the National Diet Library in Japan. Toning of pages and folio with dust staining of folio and a stain on rear cover. Crease on top right hand corner. Artwork and poetry in good condition. Description
1963. A striking homemade book, with wonderful watercolored illustrations filling the borders of every page of this hagiographic account of St. Barthomew. Oblong, 20 by 27 cm. Unpaginated, four leaves, with five pages of content, including front cover. The illustrations are folk art-ish and winsomely naive. We would suspect that the artist was not an accomplished artist, but he worked expertly within his artistic limitations to create something especially pleasing and immediate in its artistry. Cameos include depictions of monks, seals, skiffs, a cathedral and chapel, coastline, blackbirds, etc. The images are cleverly integrated, and they capture convincingly the raw coastal beauty of Farne, which is a group of North Sea islands off the coast of Northumberland, in Northern England. Light wear.

Description
New York: Silver Swan Studios, 1930. First Edition. Limp Leatherette Porftolio. Handles. Metal Snaps to Secure Closed. Very Good. N.d., circa 1930s. Oblong, 25.5 by 33 cm. Introductory sheet, followed by 39 enumerated pages, with a Christmas card, and envelope, on every page. Pages themselves provide cost information, based on volume of order. Wide variety of Xmas card designs, with varying sizes as well. As one would expect with Christmas and Season's Greetings cards, there's a heavy dollop of nostalgia and sentimentality informing the cards, but also encountered are beautiful scenery, humor, silhouettes, Art Deco elements, cut-outs, shallow relief, etc. Most cards are folded, and sometimes double folded. The album itself is squarely from the Art Deco heyday, given the Art Deco abstract pattern of the tissue guards, as one for instance. Condition: Moderate wear to binder. Intro sheet chipped and torn, detached from the binder, and brittle. Leaf with P. 1/2 also detached and more lightly chipped. Last two leaves with some chipping, and minor loss of text on final leaf. The cards and envelopes themselves are all present and in fine condition.

Description
Tokyo: World Photo Press / World Mook, 1978-1984. This set uniformly near-fine in photo-illustrated wrappers. Scarce, with scattered OCLC records for individual issues; no records located for complete sets. A remarkable mirror world of twentieth century Americana.. First Edition. Quarto. 60 issues. A complete set of this cult-favorite mook; an encyclopedic treatment of American consumer culture, reflecting the postwar Japanese fetishization of Western identity. More cosplay bible than anthropological study, each issue is dedicated to inventorying a niche cultural theme—e.g. trucks, guns, war films, fighter jets, survival gear, mortorcycles, Star Wars merchandise, military uniforms, college campuses, police—with impressively maximalist graphic design. An issue on commercial airliners includes a survey of airport protocols, a taxonomy of flight attendant uniforms, and detailed cockpit schematics. Contents ranging from 160 to 176 pages; fully illustrated, mostly in color, many with sticker sheets.

Description
Washington, DC: Recruitment Publicity Bureau of the US Army, 1944 First edition. Uncommon. . Original wrappers, depicting blonde woman in WAC uniform working on a map. . Quarto. 7.75 in. x 8.25 in. . With photographic reproductions on every page. There is some toning to back cover. Staples are rusted. A very good copy. This printed booklet promotes the Women's Army Corps to potential recruits. The first leaf introduces the WAC woman: "She has enlisted for the duration. Her hands and her ability contribute to a swifter victory." They describe a why a woman becomes a WAC member: "Because she shares a peaceful world, she knows she must share the fight to help restore the peace we have lost." The booklet includes full-page photos of different roles for which WAC members can be trained, such as Code Clerk, Topographical Draftsman, Bookbinder, Artist, Mimeograph Operator, and more. Short biographies and photos for real WAC women are featured. For example, the biography for a bookbinder is: "Preservation of vital Army records by binding notes, memoranda and other papers into book form is the assignment of Private First Class Martha L.H. Healan at the Field Artillery School. Private Healan, whose home is in Gainesville, Georgia, was an inspector in a wearing apparel factory in civilian life. She learned bookbinding in the WAC."

Description
Nashville: Forward Movement, Executive Committee Foreign Missions, 1904. Very Good. Four-page Leaflet. 17 cm. Later horizontal fold with modest splitting at both ends ot that fold. The Lapsley was a steamer used by this Presbyterian mission on the Congo river. The current steamer launched in 1901 and was caught in a whirlpool in 1903 leading to the death of "more than 23 missionaries and Africans" according to online information titled "Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley). A replacement was needed. This leaflet sought to promote the raising of $25,00 for a replacement. This appeal must have succeeded because the replacement was soon built in Scotland and dedicated there at the end of 1905. According to the online site, it lasted for more than 25 years on the Congo and its tributaries.

Oblong (33 x 26cm.). Some chipping and tears on cover edges. Light soil. Page wrinkling. An unusual assemblage; could be one of a kind or a very limited production. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good+. 1928. Unstated edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, light shelfwear, front board very slightly bowed, a bit of spotting on the front cover, spine cloth somewhat darkened; bookplate of MGM writer/producer Carey Wilson on front pastedown]. Novel about the collision between the romantic notions of an unsophisticated Brooklyn stenographer and the drab reality of her life and relationships. This was the first novel by this North Carolina-born poet-novelist (1893-1938), who cut his literary teeth as a book reviewer in Brooklyn and Chicago and by the mid-1920s had published several volumes of verse and also had a successful play, "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em," to his credit. Around the time this book was published, he decamped for Hollywood, where his most notable credit as a screenwriter was actually his first: as co-scenarist with King Vidor on the silent classic THE CROWD. Married since 1924 to actress Peggy Wood, he died of tuberculosis just a month shy of his 45th birthday. .
