Description
1932. SVERDLIN, L.S. U nas i u nikh: itogi XVII konferentsii VKP(b). 10 pp. text and 36 plates. Folio, 370 x 270 mm, loose as issued in publisher's illustrated portfolio. Moscow: Izogiz, 1932. A truly spectacular book, which transcends its subject matter, and which can stand on its own as an important illustrated book. As with other isotype books, the creator demonstrates what can be achieved with the use of imagination. The book is one of great rarity, with OCLC listing only a single copy worldwide, at Harvard, and it lacks 14 plates.

Description
Finely engraved vignette on title (inner portion of image slightly obscured by the wrapper). [4] leaves. Small 4to, modern wrappers. Frankfurt: 1680. First edition of one of the earliest publications on the famous comet of 1680-81. Apart from its brightness, this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope (by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg). Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke, Flamsteed, Newton, and John Evelyn. Mentzer (1651-1727), was professor of mathematics at the University of Giessen and later, because of his religious convictions, was obliged to move to Hamburg where he taught at the city’s gymnasium. The comet was first observed on 14 November 1680 by Kirch; it became quite bright and prominent by the end of that month. Clearly, Mentzer rushed his brief report of the sensational comet into print. Very good copy. Small blank portion of title and third leaf removed. ❧ Kronk, Cometography, I, pp. 369-73. Poggendorff, II, col. 121.

Description
New York: Major & Knapp Eng. & Lith. Co. 449 Broadway, 1865. Elegantly engraved oblong broadsheet, 8" x 10-1/2". Printed using several different fonts, vignette of eagle standing on banner with wings outstretched at head of certificate, two smaller vignettes of Black laborers picking cotton at left and bottom center. Entire certificate surrounded with decorative border. Within the borders: "3,000 SHARES" and "SHARES $100 EACH. Twenty-five cent revenue stamp at top left corner. Signatures of C[harles] C. Puffer, Secretary, and W[illiam] G. Markham, President. On verso is form for transfer of shares. Fine. Sea Island cotton was a long-fiber cotton grown on the "sea islands, along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas. Its fine, uniform texture and silk luster rendered it the most desirable of cotton. Thousands of acres of cotton fields became available near the end of the Civil War when plantation owners fled before the Union Army and newly free Black workers deserted their plantations. Northern businessmen sought these desirable plantations. The Sea Island Company, also known as the Sea Island Cotton Company, was organized by Northern businessman William G. Markham, a cattle and sheep breeder, with a three million dollar capitalization and the aim to relaunch these "Sea Island" plantations with salaried Black labor. The Sea Island Company later merged with the U.S. Cotton Company around 1867. While the laborers were to be paid, the two vignettes of Black men collecting cotton are nearly identical to antebellum images of slaves found on Southern and Confederate bank notes. [Puffer-Markham Family Papers, William L. Clements Library, The University of Michigan.] William Guy Markham [1836-1922] was part of an extended family business active in selling wheat, cattle, sheep, and cotton. In 1858 he began breeding Durham cattle, establishing himself as one of the most successful cattle dealers throughout America. In 1872, he plunged himself into the American Merino sheep industry and took the business worldwide. [Puffer-Markham Family Papers, William L. Clements Library, The University of Michigan.] Isaac Gibbard [1834-1911], born in England came to New York State with his parents, and from Genesee College [now Syracuse University] in 1859. Ordained a Methodist deacon, he became chaplain of the 143 New York State Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1883, Governor Grover Cleveland, appointed Gibbard to the Board of Managers of the State Industrial School in Rochester; he later served as the board's president from 1892 to 1906. Charles Chenery Puffer [1841-1915] was a bank cashier and financier with the Shelburne Falls Bank of Massachusetts before managing plantations for the Sea Island Cotton Company in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the brother-in-law of William Guy Markham. A Columbia carpetbagger, Puffer campaigned for the local Republican party while actively supporting Governor Daniel H. Chamberlain. He later moved north and owned a dairy farm in Avon, New York, with Markham. [Puffer-Markham Family Papers, William L. Clements Library, The University of Michigan.].

Description
Basel: Beyler Museum, 2008. First edition. A fine copy. 12 x 9.5 inches. 200 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original pictorial wrappers. "Jackson Pollock's pioneering "drip" technique provided the model for what Harold Rosenberg would term "Action Painting"--using the canvas as an arena for the emphatically physical, even balletic application of paint, and as a record of that engagement. Pollock also provided the credo for this approach: "When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about... The painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess." Featuring works by 25 major representatives of this movement, Action Painting: Jackson Pollock and Gesture in Painting addresses the fundamental qualities of gestural abstraction from 1945 to 1965, assessing common traits as well as contrasts in practice between America and Europe (where it was known as Informel). Essays by acclaimed specialists, alongside introductions to each of the featured artists, make this volume a revealing presentation of one of the most important artistic movements in the twentieth century. Artists include Karel Appel, Lynda Benglis, Norman Bluhm, Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Hans Hartung, Eva Hesse, Hans Hofmann, Gerhard Hoehme, Asger Jorn, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Jackson Pollock, Kazuo Shiraga, Pierre Soulages, Clyfford Still, Cy Twombly and Wols" (the publisher).
