Description
Venice: Francesco Bindoni & Maffeo Pasini, 1529. Octavo (17 cm); 2 volumes: 528; 549 [1] leaves. Woodcut architectural title pages (volume II printed in red and black); woodcut printer's devices, and 44 woodcut vignettes. Later, possibly recent or recently restored vellum over boards in Spanish style, titled in manuscript on spines in Spanish, "Obras de Plutarco." Edges stained red. Paper repairs to one signature in volume II with some loss of text. Pages bright and fresh. References: Adams P-1628. First published in 1482, the Italian translation of Plutarch's Parallel Lives by the wool merchant from Rieti, Battista Alessandro Iaconelli, was vastly influential. Iaconelli only finished about half the corpus (translating from Latin versions by Filelfo, Bruni, Guarini, Barbaro, etc). The second part was translated by Giulio Bordone and appended to Iaconelli's translation after 1525. This edition by the Venetian house of Francesco Bindoni and his stepfather Maffeo Pasini is illustrated with a two-panel woodcut scene at the beginning of each chapter: 44 vignettes in all, in addition to the graceful architectural title pages and the printer's emblem of Archangel Gabriel (with a dog) after the colophons.
