Description
Hamburg: [s.n.], 1759. 8vo. 177 x 121 mm. (7 x 4 3/4 inches). 103 pp. Woodcut vignette on title-page. Printing flaw on page 26 with first few words at the beginning of each line are faintly printed. Text lightly soiled. Original paste-paper wrappers, orange paper back strip with paper label pasted over spine; edges of spine rubbed, occasional worming to gutter. Rare Italian edition of Jean Blondel's essay on mankind, which is dedicated to all classes of society. Blondel published this work with the idea of lifting the spirit of men and women and suggesting they focus on feelings and sentiments which have been lost in the rush of progress. Entitled "Mankind, such as they Are and as they Should Be" is one of a number of essays published by Blondel in the 1750's. He was an important jurist by training and member of the administrative court of Louis XVI. In the early years of the Enlightenment, Blondel was involved in both criminal reform and economics. He witnessed classes of men and women from an analytical point of view and recognized that understanding the condition of man required more than statistics. Orazio Arrighi Landini translated the work right after it was published. Arrighi was a noted Italian actor, orator, and author who was well known throughout Italy and the Austrian Empire. One copy of this edition is listed in ICCU; no copies are listed in NUC or OCLC. A second edition was published in Venice in 1770. Not in Brunet. (102).
