Description
Jack Smith. No binding. Just About Fine. Jack Smith (filmmaker) [New York]: Artists Space, [1976]. Vintage original 17 1/2 x 22" (44.5 x 56 cm.) poster, unfolded, just about fine. Documents a Jack Smith performance, which contained a barbed criticism of filmmaker/critic Jonas Mekas. Smith played a covetous trainer parading out a film actress, played by a toy penguin, for his own financial gain -- a supposed metaphor for his relationship with Jonas Mekas. Though both underground sensations, as the story goes, Jack Smith felt that Mekas had drummed up controversy over Smith's Flaming Creatures, profiting from control of the print. Although unsigned, this poster was clearly created by Smith, and hence constitutes a rare example of his graphic work.

Berlin: Logos, 1924. First Edition. Very good. First edition, 1 of 3000 copies; 6 1/2 x 4 3/4; pp. [4], 7-37, [2]; textured, burgundy wraps, printed in black; partially unopened; a bit of wear to tips of spine; a small nick and mild creasing to fore-edge of wraps; in very good condition. Ilia Britan (1885 - 1941) was a poet, publicist, and lawyer, who would be persecuted, arrested, and eventually expelled from Russia in 1923 for advocating in front of Lenin for the rights of non-Party members of the Mossoviet (abbreviation for Moscow Soviet - a shadow city administration of the city between the February and the October revolutions and the official city administration during the Soviet period). His current booklet, one of extreme criticism of Soviet policies, written in the form of a letter, was allegedly received by Britan from one of the high-ranking figures of the Communist Party - Nikolai Bukharin (1888 - 1938) - who would indeed be charged with conspiring to overthrow he Soviet State in 1937 and would be executed in 1938. Four years after this publication, in 1928, the letter was openly credited to Bukharin and published by the "Die Weltbühne" journal. Britan moved to France in 1938, was arrested as a foreign national of Jewish origin in 1941, sent to a concentration camp, and executed in December of the same year. Uncommon, with 3 copies at US institutions and none in the trade.

[San Francisco]: Printed [by the Grabhorn Press] for Members of The Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, 1932. Limited Edition. Wraps. Near fine. One of 100 copies, small quarto size, 15 pp. A charming story of a young boy's Christmas morning in San Francisco, and a promise he made to the Christ child in the church's creche - a promise which required a bit of explanation to the parish Priest... In "Chronology of Twenty-Five Years, The Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, 1928-1953", Douglas S. Watson is listed as a Roxburghe member, serving as Printer's Devil for the 1932-33 season and subsquently as Master of the Press for the two seasons of 1933-34 and 1934-35. Watson was the author and/or editor of many books having to do with San Francisco/California history and growth, including "The Life of Johann August Sutter" (printed by the Grabhorn Press in 1932/33), "The Expedition into California of the Venerable Padre Fra Junipero Serra and his companions in the year 1769...." (printed at the Nueva California Press, 1934), and "The Santa Fe Trail to California 1849-1852" (printed by the Grabhorn Press for The Book Club of California in 1931), to name only a few. ___DESCRIPTION: String-bound into blue paper wraps, printed label tipped onto the front wrap with a decorative border in orange, yellow and blue, title in dark green lettering with a decorative initial capital, yapped edges, title page with same title lettering (in black), stated on the bottom of the title page "Printed for Members of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco" (note that the volume does not mention the Grabhorn Press as the printer, it is in their bibliography), decorative title also opens the first page of text, decorative page numbers at the top of the text; small quarto size (10" by 6 5/8"), pagination: [i-ii] [1] 2-13. ___CONDITION: Near fine, the wraps clean, the label on the front wrap clean and without any wear, the string binding strong, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of edgewear to the edges of the wraps, some light sunning to the top edge of the wraps and at the spine, and one shallow crease to the bottom corner of the back wrap. Altogether a bright, near fine copy of this somewhat scarce (in the marketplace) piece of Grabhorn printing (as of this writing, there is only one other copy listed online; OCLC locates 23 copies with institutions). ___CITATION: Grabhorn Press Bibliography no. 176, which states that one hundred copies, of which forty were for members of the Roxburghe Club, were privately printed for Douglas S. Watson in 1932. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
1899. [illustrated by himself] With 30 Illustrations by the Author. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1899. Original light green cloth pictorially decorated in orange, yellow-green, light blue and white. First American Edition of Hardy's first volume of verse, published about six weeks after the London one (which was dated 1898). This volume "marks the final emergence of Hardy's primary interest, verse. The thirty years that remained to him were devoted to the composition of poetry..." [Purdy]. Of particular interest are the 31 illustrations by Hardy himself (the number cited on the title page apparently excludes the frontispiece); they serve as "a pleasant reminder of Hardy's architectural training and his skill as a draughtsman." These illustrations were discarded when WESSEX POEMS was next reprinted (in 1912). This is a bright, nearly fine copy of this attractively-bound volume that is printed on heavy glossy paper; there is a touch of wear at the corners of the spine, and the front endpaper is cracked but tight; there are two bookplates on the front paste-down. The English edition consisted of only 500 copies; though the number of American copies is unknown, it could not have been many. Purdy p. 106.

Turn to page 145 and read their names. I have a little ranch in King County. It was named for William King, a 16 year old boy who was one of the "32". On page 283 you will see the first page of the list of those who died in the Alamo. Kindest regards, Delbert R. Ward". New York: Falk Publishing Co., Inc.. Very Good+. (c.1922). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, probably as issued) [good solid copy, light shelfwear to bottom edge, a little spotting/soiling to fore-edge, minor discoloration to endpapers, attractive vintage bookplate (W. Ernest Vincent II) on front pastedown; gilt lettering on front cover a little rubbed but still fully readable]. (B&W photographic plates) This volume, "used as a supplementary text in [the] New York Institute of Photography," tells the budding screenwriter everything he or she needs to know, in 25 straightforwardly-titled chapters: "What Scenario Editors Want from You"; "What a Continuity Is"; "How a Story is Handled"; "How Censorship Affects the Writer"; etc. The author, per a brief bio on the title page, had written several other tomes along the same lines -- including "The Motion Picture Story" in 1914, one of the first such how-to books -- and had worked in various capacities for several motion picture firms of the day (the Selig Polyscope Company, Pathé Exchange, the Universal Film Manufacturing Co., etc.). The text is illustrated by numerous stills from silent films, although most are not identified by title. .
