Description
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Signed by Charles Beaumont on the front free endpaper. 234 pp. Bound in publisher's gray cloth-affect paper-covered boards with blue and white lettering to spine. Near Fine with light rubbing to extremities; binding square and firm. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light wear and scattered small abrasions to rear panel, much nicer than usually found. A lovely signed copy of the author's first book. Beaumont was much admired by his contemporaries for his short fiction and Twilight Zone scripts, and died tragically young from what may have been early-onset Alzheimer's. His signature is uncommon.

Description
1973. Ephemera. Very Good. An archive of 19 typed notes and letters, signed (TNS and TLS) and 6 typescripts by Piers Anthony, a prolific science fiction author staring in the 1960s. He is best known for his series of Xanth novels. This group of letters also includes 10 retained carbons of letters from Richard Geis to Anthony. Geis was a prolific writer of soft-core pornographic novels, which for many years was his main source of income. As a hobby, he published several fanzines, the best-known of which was Science Fiction Review (SFR). According to the Fancyclopedia 3, Geis's various fanzines were among the most influential in science fiction in the 1960s and 1970s. Geis was nominated for 30 Hugos in the fanzine category and won thirteen. Most of Anthony's letters are densely typed, with narrow margins. The paper is often low quality and tanned. All items are ribbon copies, unless noted. Many of the letters have lines in the margin made by Geis, perhaps for editorial purposes. Many of the letters were written as Letters of Comment (LoC), intended for publication. The archive consists of: 1) July 8, 1969. 5 pp. TLC, written as an LoC, a wide-ranging commentary on science fiction novels and publishing. In it, Anthony describes himself as "one of the youngest and turkiest of the young turks." 2) December 20, 1969. 4 pp. TLS LoC. 3) February 10, 1970. 2 pp. TLS Chatty letter mentioning a dispute with Ballantine Books. 4) April 12, 1970. 2 pp TLS on one sheet. About sending Anthony's archive to Syracuse University. 5) May 31, 1970. 2 pp. TLS on one sheet. Chatty letter on books and science fiction gossip. 6) July 2, 1970. 3 pp. TLS LoC complaining about a bad review of Anthony's novel Macroscope in SFR. 7) October 18, 1970. 1 p. TLS transmitting Anthony's periodic column for SFR, "Off the Depend" (a pun on "off the deep end). With the 5-page typescript of the column stapled to the letter. The column focuses on "hack" writing using L. Ron Hubbard's Fear as the main example. 8) December 19, 1970. 1 p. TLS about collaborative novels. 9) February 8, 1971. 2 pp. TLS on one sheet. Chatty letter about writing science fiction for a career and its connection to the pornographic book market. 10) February 18, 1971. 3 pp. TLS about a proposed novel collaboration between Geis and Anthony. With a 3 pp. carbon copy of a letter from Geis in response. Geis's letter is typed on the back of the 1971 Hugo Award nomination form. 11) February 27, 1971. 3-1/2 pp TLS LoC on three sheets. With a half-page holograph postscript. Geis had lined out two paragraphs, probably indicating editing for publication. 12) April 23, 1971. 1-1/2 pp. TLS on one leaf. About collaborative novels and offering consolation on the end of Science Fiction Review. 13) May 3, 1971. 2pp. TLS on one leaf, about Geis and Anthony's proposed collaborative novel, Sword of the Golem. 14) November 13, 1971. TNS with a carbon of Geis's response stapled to it. 15) December 14, 1971. TNS. 16) April 22, 1972. 2 pp TLS on one sheet. Much about Anthony's unpublished pornographic novel 3.97 Erect. 17) April 30, 1972. Acknowledging Geis's withdrawal from the collaborative novel project. With rather unsympathetic comments about Geis's personal life. 18) May 30, 1972. 2 pp. TLS LoC for the second issue of Geis's new eponymous fanzine. 19) February 5, 1973. 5 pp. TLS, divided into several sections, covering watches, bicycles, typewriters, diabetes, kidneys, collaboration, and non-fiction. 20) Ca. 1969? Half-page typescript review of The Ring of Ritornel by Charles L. Harness. 21) Ca. 1970. Two-page typescript review of The Year of the Quiet Sun by Wilson Tucker, with a three-page typed list of copyediting corrections. All five pages on standard typing paper. 22) Ca. 1970. Four-page typescript of an Off the Depend column, a rambling essay on science fiction books and writers, with much on Jack Vance. 23) Ca. 1970. Review of A Case of Conscience by James Blish in the form of an Off the Depend column. Five page carbon typescript; marked by Geis for issue #31, about 1970. 24) Ca. 1970. 8 pp. carbon typescript of an Off the Depend column about Anthony's difficulty in finding a publisher for his novel Hasam, based on the Arabian Nights. 25) 9 carbon copies of Geis's letters to Anthony, with a stray letter from a reader about Mario Puzo's The Godfather and what science fiction writers can learn from it. Letters very good to near fine; most folded for mailing. Paper of some letters beginning to chip at the edges.

Description
Northampton, Massachusetts; New York, 1935. Unbound. Near Fine. Two volumes. Small octavos. Both measuring 4" x 5.5". Latches broken and some edgewear thus both volumes near fine. Two line-a-day diaries kept by Elinor Zipkin, sister of New York City socialite, Jerry Zipkin, while she was attending college. Elinor attended Smith College, possibly a classmate of Julia Child, and writes about her experiences between 1933 and 1935. Many of the entries discuss her days at school, studying, seeing films with friends, and going to class. "Compulsory chapel - can't believe I've been here a week - the time passed so slowly!" In the same entry she lists her classes for the day writing, "French. Tap dancing - Psych recitations. Met Sonny for lunch at Paradise then to German and we walked back...and had a cigarette and talked a while. Then home to study for a history written before and after dinner. Phoned New York and spoke to Mother and Daddy - And so to bed." In January of 1935, Zipkin went to a Gertrude Stein lecture entitled, "The Gradual Making of The Making of Americans." Zipkin writes that after the lecture she and her friends, "went backstage and got her autograph - also spoke to Alice B. Tolkas, a queer looking duck - G.S. was just as I pictured her - even more feminine." Zipkin was born into a wealthy family in New York that made its money through real estate development. When she was not at school she discusses spending time in New York with her family. In the beginning of one semester she writes about being upset about leaving New York. "Was in a rather bad mood as I had to take the train back to college. I just can't believe how fast the time went." Zipkin's brother, Jerry, went on to be a man about town and close friend to both Nancy Reagan and Somerset Maugham. An interesting account of a young socialite's time at Smith College in the mid-1930s.

Description
THE TABLE OF CONTENTS AS AN EDITORIAL PROSPECTUS 4to (195x144 mm). [24] leaves. Collation: A-F4. With the woodcut arms of the city of Verona on the title page. Late 18th-century red morocco, panels with gilt floral borders, gilt edges, decorated endpapers (a few scratches). Some very light occasional foxing. A very good copy. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the table of contents of a comprehensive chronicle of the city of Verona, intended by Canobbio to show the plan of his Historia intorno la nobiltà e l'antichità di Verona, to which he worked from 1577 to 1604 and which should cover 3436 years of history of the territory. The work was never finished, only the present index and a summary, Breve compendio cavato dalla sua historia di Verona (1598), were published during his lifetime. Apparently the manuscript of the larger work got lost (cf. A. Viviani, Alessandro Canobbio e la sua opera storica, in: "Nova historia", VII/1-2, 1955, pp. 42-52). Alessandro Canobbio, a native of Milan, was first active in the wool manufacture and trade at Verona and was for several years head of the local wool spinning mill. But he was more attracted by the profession of a notary and obtained his patent in 1562. He then worked for the city administration in various important positions. In 1570 he became secretary to Niccolò Ormaneto, bishop of Verona. Between 1572 and 1577 he resided for longer periods at Padua, where he wrote an account of the plague, which ravaged there in 1576. He also wrote a history of the academies of Verona (1571, reprinted in 1590) and a Discorso a i presidenti della carità di Verona (1572), on poor relief. From 1589 to 1596 he helped to organize several archives, public and private. His last major work was a code of behavior for the true Christian with advice on the conjugal life, the education of children, the employment of money and social intercourse (cf. E. Rossini, Un notatio del secolo XVI: Alessandro Canobbio, in: "Atti e memorie dell'Accademia di agricoltura, scienze e lettere di Verona", s. 6, XIX, 1967/68, pp. 157-198). Edit 16, CNCE8916; Index Aurelienis, 131.307; Universal STC, 818351 L. Carpanè, M. Menato & D. Brunelli, eds., Annali della tipografia Veronese, Baden-Baden, 1992, p. 305, no. 248; R. xcii+616 pages with bibliography. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in contemporary half calf with black spine label and gilt lettering. Publications de la Societe d'Etudes pour la colonisation de la Guyane francaise, Number 4. The bibliographical catalogue occupies pages 579-616, and contains descriptions of 240 works on Guiana. Sabin 56097. First edition.French Guiana (French: Guyane française, officially Guyane) is an overseas department (French: département d'outre-mer, or DOM) of France, located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations, Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs, French Guiana is also an overseas region of France, one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Louis XV sent 12,000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.[2] Its infamous Île du Diable (Devil's Island) was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70,000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939.[3] In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French, though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817. A border dispute with Brazil arose in the late nineteenth century over a vast area of jungle, leading to the short-lived pro-French independent state of Counani in the disputed territory and some fighting between settlers, before the dispute was resolved largely in favor of Brazil by the arbitration of the Swiss government.Condition:Front inner hinge cracked, rubbing to hinges and corners, some internal foxing else a very good copy.

A map of Washington state showing the railroads, electric railway lines and traction companies in separate colors (including the "Whatcom County Railway & Light Company," incorporated in 1902, marking the start of Puget Power’s domination of public transportation and power systems in the City of Bellingham, and the "Walla Walla Valley Traction Company," incorporated in 1905, and franchised by Walla Walla to operate trolleys in city limits). Very good. No listings found on OCLC.
