Description
1597. Seven columns of text per page. 68; 72 folding leaves. Two vols. Large 8vo (285 x 206 mm.), orig. (or very early) dark thick wrappers (strengthened & with new endpapers), new stitching. From the colophon: Kyoto: Ekirin Hirai, 1597. The setsuyoshu, the essential Japanese dictionary, “one of the mainstays of the publishing industry and…probably the most likely book to be found in a house of few books.”–Kornicki, The Book in Japan, p. 248. Widely used from the 15th century through the early Meiji period; there were more than 500 editions in many styles and formats, and many with additions. All early editions are extremely rare, as they were used to death. We find no 15th- or 16th-century edition of the setsuyoshu in WorldCat. Anonymously compiled sometime in the second half of the 15th century, setsuyoshu was originally a dictionary used for looking up Chinese characters using the Japanese reading of that character or word. Through the 16th century, it remained a Japanese language dictionary of characters appropriate to the vocabulary popular in Muromachi times, with occasional word commentary and etymological explanation. The earliest setsuyoshu (kohon setsuyoshu or “old-style” setsuyoshu), are divided into three main categories, based on the first word listed in the dictionary: the earliest, Ise (the old name for Mie prefecture), and two offshoots: Indo (India) and Inui (northwest). Our edition — the so-called “Ekirin” edition, compiled and published by Ekirin (or Kyuyo or Katsuzaemon) Hirai — is the first edition of the Inui category. It is the first setsuyoshu whose author we can identify with certainty and became the model for all later Edo editions of the setsuyoshu dictionaries. Ekirin Hirai was a samurai who entered the nascent world of commercial publishing in Kyoto. He was engaged by the Nishi hongan ji (temple) of Kyoto to publish its Buddhist texts. The audience for the kohon setsuyoshu was the literate elite, and they used the dictionary mainly for artistic pursuits. By the late 17th century, the setsuyoshu developed from its initial dictionary form into a household encyclopedia with additional text containing useful knowledge for daily life. Fresh set. Some worming throughout, mostly marginal and carefully repaired. Preserved in a chitsu. ❧ Don Clifford Bailey, “Early Japanese Lexicography” in Monumenta Nipponica, Vol. 16, Nos. 1/2 (1960), pp. 1-52. Black & white illus. to lower wrapper. [4] pp. Square 4to (185 x 185 mm.), printed wrappers, staple-bound. Bradford, Massachusetts: Bradford Junior College, 1969. Rare Seth Siegelaub (1941-2013) exhibition catalogue; we find only six copies in North American institutions. In 1968 and 1969 Siegelaub organized a series of shows on college campuses that highlighted Conceptual and Minimalist artists from America and Europe. He had staged a show at Bradford Junior College the year before, displaying the work of Carl Andre, Robert Barry, and Lawrence Weiner in cooperation with Douglas Huebler who was teaching there. For the present 1969 exhibition a seminar with Kosuth, Morris and Siegelaub was held at the college’s Laura Knott Gallery on 5 March. The artists’ works are succinctly recorded in the catalogue: Kosuth: “1. II. Relation (Art as Idea as Idea), 1968 / (Consisting of 3 parts: A. Absolute Relation / B. Partial Relation / C. Correspondence of Relationship) / Each part will appear separately in 3 local publications.” Morris: “1. There are two temperatures: one outside, one inside. 1969.” “After the exhibition Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Lawrence Weiner was held at Bradford Junior College, it was Kosuth’s and Morris’s turn to be invited there by Douglas Huebler, along with Siegelaub. The two artists decided to make work ‘without walls’: Kosuth published one element of his multi-part work The Second Investigation in three local newspapers, while Morris used the entire campus as the site of an environment and conceptual installation. The two interventions were brought together and listed in an almost entirely white catalogue, edited by Siegelaub, with an aerial photograph of the college and its gallery on the last page.”–Seth Siegelaub: Beyond Conceptual Art (2016), p. 148. Near fine condition. ❧ L. Coelewij & S. Martinetti, eds., Seth Siegelaub: Beyond Conceptual Art (2016), pp. 148-9 (pictured).

London: George Bishop, Ralph Newberrie and Robert Barker, 1599. Full Description: HAKLUYT, Richard. The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation, made by Sea or ouer-land, ro the remote and farthest distant quarters of the Earth, at any time within the compasse of these 1600 yeres: Deuided into three seuerall Volumes, according to the positions of the Regions, whereunto they were directed... London: George Bishop, Ralph Newberrie and Robert Barker, 1599-1600. The second, expanded edition of Volume I. The first edition of Volumes II and III as they were not part of the first edition. With the second state of the title-page which has the publication year of 1599, the mention of Cadiz has been removed and it also has "yeres" for "years". This copy retains the often excised leafs about Cadiz (pp 607-620). Three books in two folio volumes (11 x 7 1/4 inches;278 x 185 mm ). [24, 620; [16], 312, 204; [16], 868 pp. Black letter. Woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces. Bound without the map in the third volume as usual. Pforzheimer notes: "it is generally allowed that the map which belongs in that third volume, only occasionally found, was not issued with all copies." In the style of 17th century full calf, neatly rebacked with 17th century spines. Boards with gilt central device. Spines ruled in gilt. Tan morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Newer endpapers. Some scorching to the top and bottom margin of the first volume, occasionally touching the heading and page number. The final three leaves (Rrr4-6) of the first book (volume II) with some staining. Occasional dampstaining. Previous owner's occasional old ink marginalia. The first title-page with two early ink signatures. Armorial bookplate on verso of the first and third title-pages. Still, overall a very good copy. "The most complete collection of voyages and discoveries, by land as well as by sea, and of the nautical achievements of the Elizabethans" (PMM on first edition) This is the second state of the second edition of this celebrated chronicle, which comprises a remarkable and comprehensive assemblage of English exploration narratives from the sixteenth-century As is well known, Elizabeth I ordered the excision of the account of the 1596 Voyage to Cadiz after the Earl of Essex (a principal player at Cadiz) disgraced himself by returning from Ireland without leave on 28 September 1599. Unlike many other copies, the account of the Voyage to Cadiz is still present in this copy. The third volume of this title is entirely devoted to America. Richard Hakluyt (1552?-1616), English scholar and clergyman. His Principal Navigations (1589) "contains accounts of the voyages of Raleigh, of the Cabots, of Drake's circumnavigation, of Martin Frobisher's search for the Northwest Passage, and the like. His work, which reflects the great exploring spirit of the Elizabethan age, gave additional impetus to English exploration, conquest, and colonization" (Benét's Reader's Encyclopedia). According to Church, " Hakluyt's Principall Navigations was the fruit of a life devoted to promoting the cause of English colonisation and commerce by disseminating knowledge about, and stimulating interest in, all the less known, or recently discovered parts of the world', and the supplement 'contains fourteen rare works not easily accessible in any other form, and is quite as important as either of the volumes published in [Hakluyt's] time." In regards to the first edition of this title, this is the first appearance of Sir Francis Drake's account of his circumnavigation which also includes his exploration of the California Coast. "Hakluyt had indeed begun to prepare such an account [of Drake's Circumnavigation] but withdrew it so as not to prejudice a collection of Drake's voyages which was in preparation. Permission now came to insert it, not improbably from Drake himself" (Hakluyt Handbook, p. 475). Church 322. Fox I pp.3-4. STC 12626. Hill 744. Pforzheimer 443. PMM 105. Sabin 29595. HBS 69271. $22,500.

Description
London: R. Bowyer, 1795. First thus. Near Fine. Two large quarto volumes (12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches; 318 x 248 mm.). Unpaginated. Text in double columns. With two copper-engraved title-pages (with a separate title-page for the New Testament) and sixty-two plates (including two frontispieces) from the works of Dürer, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Rubens, and others. Lower corner of 3H3 (possible paper-fault) torn away with no loss of text. Some foxing to a few of the plates, otherwise remarkably bright and fresh. Contemporary English full dark blue straight-grained morocco. Covers with two gilt borders surrounding blind-stamped Greek key design. Spines with five double raised bands ruled in gilt, blind-stamped Greek key design and lettered in gilt in compartments. Board-edges decorated in blind, elaborate gilt decorated turn-ins, gray liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. Gift signature to front flyleaf in volume one (dated 1841) and a tipped-in square of paper with another nineteenth century gift inscription. Some light scuffing to the boards, otherwise near fine. A spectacular example of the large paper edition, this Bible sometimes called the "Killer Bible" for its typographical error in Mark 7, verse 27: "Let the children be killed" rather than "filled." It was richly illustrated by James Fittler (1758-1835), an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes, who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The printer, Thomas Bentley, produced large editions for Thomas Macklin, Rudolph Ackermann, and Paul Colnaghi, all publishers of plate books; he also printed several of the earliest books for the Roxburghe Club. ESTC lists three editions of the Bowyer and Fittler Bible: this one, which ESTC describes as the large paper edition; the regular two-volume quarto edition (also 1795); and a: two-volume twelvemo edition (1796), which was issued in parts. ESTC T95050. Near Fine.

24/03/1847. Acquired directly from the descendants and never before offered for sale Letters and documents of Polk from the Mexican War have become quite scarceLangdon C. Easton graduated at the U. S. Military Academy in 1838. He served in the Florida and Mexican wars, and during the Civil War. He was Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Cumberland from December 1863, until May 1864, and of the armies commanded by Major General William T. Sherman from May 4, 1864, until the war’s end, being present during the operations of the campaign from Chattanooga to the taking of Atlanta, and subsequently at the capture of Savannah. On the march from the latter city to Goldsborough, NC, and thence to Washington, DC, via Raleigh and Richmond, General Easton acted in the same capacity. During the war he was brevetted major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and brigadier general, ""for distinguished and important service in the quartermaster's department in the campaign terminating in the capture of Atlanta, Georgia,"" and major general, March 13, 1865, ""for meritorious service during the war."" After the war he remained in the regular army, serving as quartermaster with the rank of colonel.Document signed, with an eagle, stars, flags and cannon, Washington, March 24, 1847, naming Easton assistant quartermaster general with the rank of captain, effective the third day of March, 1847. The document is countersigned by Secretary of War William Marcy. This was the very post Easton had wanted, as he had just the month before written a friend, “I shall be very disappointed if the war terminates without my having a hand in it. My best chance for advancement would be to obtain the appointment of Captain and Assistant Quartermaster"".Letters and documents of Polk from the Mexican War have become quite scarce, and those documents making interesting appointments even more so.

Description
New York: John Müller, 1887. First Edition. Ten octavo issues (22.5cm) in original stapled self-wrappers; 16pp per issue. Mild to moderate external soil and wear; first and/or last leaves neatly detached on three issues (but all present); still a clean and well-preserved grouping, Very Good. Texts primarily in German. Of the full run of seventeen issues, the following ten issues are present: No. 1 (April 1887); 2 (May); 4 (July); 7-13 (October 1887 - March 1888). Representative run of an important and extremely uncommon periodical, edited and almost entirely written by the German emigré communist-anarchist Johann Most. Most (1846-1906), by trade a bookbinder, emigrated to New York in 1882. A follower of Bakunin, Most quickly established himself as the lead- ing spokesman for "Propaganda by the Deed" in America; his weekly newspaper Freiheit, founded in 1879, emerged as the dominant German-language anarchist periodical of the period. "Most's influence on the anarchist movement in New York and other eastern cities was unquestionably profound and lasting...[at a meeting of the International Working People's Association] in Pittsburgh, Most emerged as the leading East Coast delegate and authored the conference's proclamation ...[which] declared that the people had a right to overthrow an oppressive government and that through 'organization and unity', propaganda by the deed should coexist with propaganda by the word" (Tom Goyens, "Johann Most and the German Anarchists" in Radical Gotham: Anarchism in New York City from Schwab's Saloon to Occupy Wal Street, Urbana, 2017). Following the Haymarket Affair of 1886, Most largely renounced spontaneous political violence in favor of organized activity, including the establishment of working-class militias. He continued to publish Freiheit, but the paper's tone moderated through the 1890s; in 1892, Most even published a denunciation of Alexander Berkman's attempted assassination of Henry Clay Frick, precipitating a deep rift between Most and such former allies as Berkman and Emma Goldman. Internationale Bibliothek dates from this post-Haymarket period and served as a vehicle for presenting Most's own revolutionary writings. Though given a serial title, the pamphlets stand alone, each containing a full essay, of which nearly all are signed by Most. Many of his best-known polemics made their first appearance in this series, including "An Das Proletariat" (Issue 1), "Die Göttespest" (issue 3, lacking from this run), and "Die Hoelle von Blackwells Island," recounting Most's imprisonment following the Haymarket Massacre (issue 2). Rare: OCLC notes perhaps 7 full runs in North America, with scattered holdings for individual issues. Indexed in Arndt-Olson, but with no entry. HOERDER, Immigrant Labor Press in North America, III:413. NETTLAU pp 157-9 (citing several individual titles by Most).

Description
New York: Self-published, 1978. Minor rubbing to spine of illustrated wrappers; near fine. Uncommon.. Artist's book. Duodecimo. One of two intertwined bookworks self-published by Louise Lawler in 1978; Black/White offers a loose adaptation of an unfilmed screenplay from Metro Pictures founder Janelle Reiring, dramatizing the 1917 execution of exotic dancer/alleged spy Mata Hari in France. For both publications, Lawler worked with the same conceit: printing two distinct prices for the edition to the versos of the front covers, with each copy having one of the two options circled; in this instance, the more expensive price is selected ($100.00, instead of $4.95).

As the colophon to the present work explains, "Until he was ten years old, Truman Capote lived with a family of distant and elderly cousins in a small town in rural Alabama. . . . [This] is a frankly autobiographical story about those years, and especially of his relationship with one of the cousins, Miss Sook Faul. The photograph on the cover of this edition is of the author and Miss Faulk, who died in 1938 while Mr. Capote was a student at a military academy in New York State.".
