Description
Oblong folio (236 x 322 mm.). 2 pp. 206 measures of music notated on 20 hand-ruled staves in dark brown ink on both sides of a single leaf. Mostly on 3-stave braces, but also on 2- and 4-stave braces. With numerous corrections, deletions, and corrections; 2 entire measures canceled. Browned, but on good quality laid paper and in very good condition overall. Attached at corners to thin window mat, at the foot of which is an inscription in an unknown 19th century hand in German identifying the manuscript as follows (in translation): "Original manuscript by Carl Maria von Weber. The present piece is the first draft of the chorus and ballet from the third act of Oberon. Thanks to its bouncy, exquisite melody, it became a favorite of the German people even before the opera's first performance, based solely on the piano-vocal score. The draft has English text because Weber composed Oberon, which was destined for London, with English text to get as close as possible to the spirit of the nation. This prompted him to a most serious study of the language in his final years. August 1847 [Signed with Initials] [? Etw] ... Berlin." For an account of various manuscript sources of Oberon, see Jähns 306, p. 391. Oberon, to a libretto by James Robinson Planché after Christoph Martin Wieland's eponymous poem, was first performed in London at Covent Garden on 12 April 1826. "The première ... was a great success, with lavish settings and spectacular scenic effects that impressed even Weber, and the opera remained popular throughout the season. ... It contains some of Weber's most delightful music, which has assured the work a permanent, if peripheral, place in the repertory. ... The brilliant overture opens atmospherically with Oberon's horn-call, which acts as a motif throughout the work. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 [Weber] became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt." Paul Corneilson, Clive Brown, et al. in Grove Music Online.

11/9/41. A generous demonstration by Einstein of his loyalty to friends and belief in the importance of musicDr. Theodor Rosenheim was a physician at the famed Medical University Clinic of the Charité in Germany in the 1880s. He was primarily concerned with the physiology and pathology of the digestive tract. He published an early textbook on the “Pathologie und Therapie der Krankheiten des Verdauungsapparates”. Rosenheim was one of the first in Germany to describe and publish on ulcerative colitis. He was intensively involved in the technical development of esophagoscopy and gastroscopy, which at that time were only possible with rigid instruments. The Rosenheim line, which was named after him, described the largest diagonal diameter of the gastric percussion figure.Rosenheim was appointed professor (extraordinarius) at Berlin University in 1921. He also founded a polyclinic and a private sanatorium for stomach and intestinal patients. He was well respected in Berlin and his private practice developed successfully with a large circle of patients, including Albert Einstein.Theodor’s wife was Hedwig Rosenheim and their daughter Kate was a hero of the Holocaust. She helped several thousand children from Jewish families to escape from Germany. She personally accompanied the legendary Kindertransporte to England, among other places. She travelled to the USA in 1936 to negotiate directly with the aid organizations there. She then returned to Germany to actively continue the aid campaigns. Theodor died in 1939. Käte Rosenheim was able to flee Berlin together with her 72-year-old mother Hedwig Rosenheim on January 23, 1941. They reached Havana, Cuba, via France, Spain, and Portugal. From there they were able to continue to New York, where they arrived on April 1, 1941.Albert Einstein was an accomplished violinist and music lover who was inspired by music in his scientific work. He often said that he would have been a musician if he hadn't pursued science. Another music lover was Hedwig Rosenheim. She had escaped Germany without her possessions, especially her precious musical instruments. Upon arrival in the United States, she contacted the old family friend, Albert Einstein, hoping he could help her get a flute, either for herself or another escapee, one who may have agreed to look for her. Einstein was sympathetic and rose to the occasion. He even contributed some of his personal funds to secure the flute.Typed letter signed, his vacation house in Knollwood at Saranac Lake, N.Y., September 11, 1941, to his old friend Mrs. Hedwig Rosenheim in New York City. “ The matter of [i.e. the quest for] the flute shall not fail. First, one should know what the committee is giving out – or loaning. Second, there is the Hebrew Free Loan Society, 108 Second Ave., New York, which in such cases provides interest-free loans in exchange for the backing of two guarantors. I will serve as a guarantor and contribute 20 dollars on top of that. The man should visit both institutions and can show this letter. In the hope of receiving a positive report soon, I remain, with warm greetings, your A. Einstein.” “PS. Starting next week, my address will again be in Princeton.” The committee he referred may have been the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, though there were others as well.It shows a lot about Einstein - his generosity, his continued concern for old friends who had escaped from Germany, and love for music - that he volunteered to make a personal financial contribution to obtaining the flute.

Munich: Hugo Schmidt, 1922. No. 423 OF 500 COPIES of the "Engraved Edition.. 305 x 205 mm. (12 x 8"). [6] leaves, followed by plates. With a foreword by Valerian von Loga. HANDSOME CRIMSON MOROCCO, GILT, BY OTTO DORFNER (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), covers with a strapwork frame in an Art Deco design, raised bands, strapwork ornaments at head and foot of spine, gilt lettering in one panel, turn-ins with thick and thin gilt rule, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. WITH 83 COPPERPLATE ENGRAVINGS, all with tissue guards. Spine gently faded to a soft rose, a scattering of small, faint spots to leather, but A FINE COPY--entirely clean, fresh, and bright internally, and the binding with almost no signs of wear. The sumptuous Hugo Schmidt edition of Goya's striking satirical "Caprices" is presented here in a lovely Dorfner binding. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) conceived of this series of 80 prints as a critique of the ills he saw plaguing late 18th century Spanish society. The suite focuses on the nobility, the Church, and the Inquisition, but also addresses more general societal concerns, such as child abuse, superstition, and poor education. Its general message is in keeping with the Enlightenment philosophy of the day; philosopher Alexander Nehamas writes that in these artworks, Goya advocates for a society in which "freedom in place of custom, knowledge instead of ignorance and morality where custom held sway will remove the 'lies and prejudices' that stand in the way of human happiness." However, the "Caprices" represent more than just a period critique: art historian Carl O. Schniewind writes that "in a way it may be said that modern art was born in these compositions which break away, once and for all, from the domination of eighteenth century tradition." Originally executed in etching and aquatint, this suite of prints demonstrates Goya's ability in the medium, with wonderful depth and subtlety of shading, skillfully reproduced in copper engraving in the current edition. Publisher Hugo Schmidt, who released high quality art books and facsimiles in the first two decades of the 20th century, had published a reproduction of "Los Caprichos" in photogravure in 1918. The publisher's note here, dated December 1922, tells us that the present edition, with Goya's works expertly reproduced in copperplate by the art printers J. B. Obernetter, was prompted by a lively scholarly interest in the 1918 edition. Both Schmidt editions begin with an introduction by art historian Valerian von Loga (1861-1918), who taught at the University of Berlin and is best known for his monograph on Goya. Our copy is distinguished by its binding, executed by one of the leading artisans of the period. Otto Dorfner (1885-1955) taught at the School of Applied Arts in Weimar and at the Bauhaus workshop before founding his own school to teach binding. He was awarded a number of international prizes, and is particularly noted for his work with the Cranach Press. His bindings tend to be elegantly understated, but executed with exemplary craftsmanship and using the best materials. Our binding, which falls squarely into the Art Deco mode, is almost radically decorative by comparison..

Description
U.S.S. Dickman Near the Coast of Casablanca, 1942. Good. 10¾" x 7 5/8". Single sheet printed one side. Good: old folds and a couple of chips. This is an extraordinary item that's also extraordinarily rare: an inspiring message to troops aboard the U.S.S. Dickman from Major General George S. Patton, printed on ship in advance of Operation Torch. It was found years ago in a collection of documents from a sailor who served on the Dickman. Operation Torch occurred from November 8-16, 1942. It was an invasion of French North Africa which met the British objective of securing victory in Northern Africa while allowing United States troops to begin fighting Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on a limited scale. Patton was in command of the operations Western Task Force which was aimed at Casablanca and stated, "In making our landing, we may be opposed by a limited number of Germans. It is not known whether the French African Army, composed of both white and colored troops, will contest our landing. It is regrettable to contemplate the necessity of fighting the gallant French who are at heart sympathetic towards us, but all resistance by whomever offered must be destroyed." We find nothing similar in institutional libraries or at auction.

1854. [Slavery & Abolition] THOMPSON, George. Prison Life & Reflections; or, a Narrative of the Arrest, Trial, Conviction, Imprisonment, Treatment, Observations, Reflections, and Deliverance of Work, Burr, and Thompson, Who Suffered An Unjust and Cruel Imprisonment in Missouri Penitentiary, for Attempting to Aid Some Slaves to Liberty. Three Parts in One Volume. Hartford: Published by A. Work. First Edition, 1854. Illustrated frontispiece depicting the "Interior of the Jail in Palmyra, Missouri," where the three men were held prior to transfer to the state penitentiary. Original embossed brown cloth board with gilt text to spine. 8vo. 377 pages. This rare 1854 edition of Prison Life and Reflections recounts the harrowing ordeal of George Thompson and his fellow abolitionists, James Burr and Alanson Work, who were arrested in Missouri in 1841 for attempting to assist enslaved individuals in escaping to freedom. The book serves as both a personal prison memoir and a broader abolitionist testament-an eyewitness indictment of slavery, Southern legal systems, and the moral price of resisting injustice under U.S. law. The three men, students at the Mission Institute in Quincy, Illinois-a known abolitionist training ground-crossed into Missouri with the intention of aiding enslaved people to escape. Their arrest and conviction led to a five-year sentence in the Missouri State Penitentiary. Thompson, one of the imprisoned, offers a detailed and deeply spiritual account of their experience: from arrest and trial, to the brutal conditions of confinement, to their eventual release. More than a narrative of punishment, Prison Life and Reflections is a work of moral testimony, filled with reflections on faith, endurance, and the righteousness of antislavery resistance. It circulated widely in abolitionist circles and was used to galvanize Northern sentiment against the Fugitive Slave Act and the legal compromises that upheld slavery. The volume is of critical historical importance for documenting the lived experiences of white abolitionists punished for their solidarity with enslaved Black Americans, and for illustrating the risks faced by those who participated in early iterations of the Underground Railroad. Its emotional tone, religious introspection, and eyewitness testimony provide rare insight into the penitentiary system and conscience-driven protest in pre-Civil War America. Some wear to covers, some penciled inscriptions to free end papers, and foxing throughout. Binding and text remain tight and clean. Overall very good condition. Scarce, at the time of this writing, OCLC states only one first edition is found in institutional library holdings.

Description
GEORGE PRICE. Price was a Captain that served in the 2nd California Cavalry and the 5th US Cavalry. Price volunteered for President Lincolns call for stronger federal troops and began his service as a first lieutenant in Company M, 2nd Regiment Cavalry, California Volunteers. He was quickly promoted to Captain and saw extensive duty throughout California, Utah, and Wyoming. During his post-Civil War service, he was with the U.S. 5th Cavalry and tasked with a variety of assignments which included participation in many Indian War campaigns.ALS. 4pgs. Cheyenne, Wyoming. March 18, 1880. An autograph letter signed Geo. F. Price to Eliza Johnston, the wife of Albert Sidney Johnston, discussing the engraving of her husband's bust. Dear Madam, Your esteemed favor of the 11th ins. is to hand. The enclosed photograph of Genl Johnston is mailed this day to my publisher for the information and guidance of the engraver. The engraving from Johnstons bust is selected as the model for our engraving, but in accordance with your opinion, as also that of Col. Johnston, the jaw and chin will be slightly advanced so as to show the latter naturally square with a slight cleft, as you say it appeared when in repose. I had, some time ago, submitted the engraving from Johnstons bust to the opinion of Colonel Barnett and Lt Col Royall, both having served in the old 2 Cavalry under Genl Johnston. They pronounced is a fair likeness and doubtful if the jaws and chin were too massive. The face as presented is a markedly striking one indicating growth force of character and nay feeling of regimental pride as strained more from making any change in it. But the judgment of those who are nearest and dearest to him will govern my actions, as I desire to pick such as nearly a perfect likeness as it is possible to secure, and I do not think that your suggestion can mind into effect will cause the face to lose any of its character, although it may not againis so striking an appearance. The photograph will be returned so soon as the engraver no longer requires it. I will take great pleasure in sending you a proof of the engraving and also a copy of the history of the regiment of which your husband was the first colonel and which to the hour of his deathlasting the unfortunate difference of the war. He honored and loved as it had honored and loved him. With the assurance of my respect and esteem, I remain Madam, Your obedient servant, Geo. F. Price. Albert Sidney Johnston was a general officer in the Texian Army, the United States Army, and the Confederate States Army, killed at Shiloh. Price likely fought under Albert Sidney Johnston in the 5th US Cavalry. Price was residing in Wyoming, which at this time, was still a territory. Fort D. A. Russell was established in Cheyenne in 1867, the same year it was granted a permanent city charter. Wyoming would become a state ten years after this letter. The letter is in very good condition and comes with the original mailing envelope showing Mrs. Johnston in San Francisco.

Description
Solano, New Mexico, 1908. Six page letter measuring 5 ¼ x 6 ½ inches. Envelope with many unrelated manuscript markings. Letter Near Fine.. A letter from Irene Upton (1888–1956) in Solano, New Mexico to her friend Carroll B. Benton in Boston. Upton was born in New Hampshire—her father was New Hampshire State Senator Hiram Upton—and moved to New Mexico to homestead with her family in 1900. Around 1907, the family purchased what would be the Upton Ranch in La Cinta Canyon, near Solano, a small town in northeastern New Mexico that is now nearly abandoned. At the time, the town’s economy was based on the mine in nearby Dawson. The Dawson mine was the site of two explosions, in 1913 and 1923, that caused mass casualties; Upton’s older brother Lloyd Peter Upton was killed in the earlier explosion, which was the second deadliest in US history. Upton describes hosting company and horseback riding, especially riding “three mighty mean horses”; on her family camping trip to the Rockies, she rode a horse “that the people up town won’t ride”. She tells Benton about the town’s weekly Literary Society, “one excitement of our life”: “They run a paper, different editors each week, the paper is nothing but lemons slams + knocks. Then they have readings + a debate. I am on this week. Resolved that, ‘The horse is more useful than the car.’ Sounds foolish but lots of room for argument.” Most excitingly, Upton witnessed a near-shootout in downtown Solano: “We had two shooting scrapes in one day this week + as I happened to be in town when the first started up, I came near not getting home. A Texan sheriff came in after a saloon keeper, the saloon keeper swiped a horse and beat it out of town with a 30-30 across his saddle. After him two sheriffs with six shooters drawn, then five minutes later four more joining the party[.] The man headed right for the canyon and of course we couldn’t go home on account of possible shooting. Same night our town blacksmith got drunk and went after the Texan sheriff on an old score and shot up town some before he was arrested.” This incident was apparently totally overshadowed in the press by a shooting in June of that year, when Joe Melugin killed his employee Daniel Archuleta over an argument about Melugin’s wife.[1] From the casual way Upton speaks about the shootout, then immediately pivots to the weather, it seems that these sorts of events might not have been unusual for Solano. Of interest to historians of New Mexico, especially life in its mining and ranching communities. [1] “A Fatal Quarrel, Daniel Archuleta Mortally Wounded at Solano on Thursday Morning,” The Spanish American, June 13, 1908, 1.

Description
Cambridge: The Cambridge University Press, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Two volumes (complete), quarto size, 842 pp., with (unsigned) note by the author. The Cambridge University Press began in 1534 when it was granted letters patent by King Henry VIII, and since then the publishing house, part of Cambridge University, has printed titles from numerous authors ranging from John Milton and Isaac Newton to Noam Chomsky and Stephen Hawking. This bibliography of the Press includes publications from 1696 to 1712, and also details the financial side of the business, with many facsimiles of material printed by the Press; the set forms an extensive picture of just a small part of the work produced by the world's oldest publishing house. Loosely laid into the book is a small single sheet "With the compliments of D.F. McKenzie" printed at the top, and a short note in manuscript beneath, "And with renewed Thanks for a most enjoyable morning last January". This obviously a note from the author and presumably in his hand, althought neither signed nor dated. ___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes of full blue cloth, red stamped spine label with gilt lettering and ruled borders, oval red stamped spine label with gilt ruled border and volume number, top edge stained teal, title page with emblem of the University in black, Volume I with black-and-white facsimiles of printed material from the Press and four three-colour charts of "work done by compositors and pressmen"; quarto size (11" by 7.5"), pagination: Volume I: [i-vi] vii-xv [xvi] 1-432 [433-435]; Volume II: [i-iv] v-ix [x] 1-381. In orange dust jackets with white and black lettering, the coat of arms of Cambridge University in black and title in white on the front panel, white and black lettering on the spine, the address of the Press on the rear panel, and a description of the book on the front flap with the original price of $55.00 ("in U.S.A."); note the lower left corner is clipped (we presume by the publisher, since the printed price is still present), the rear flaps are blank. Loosely laid in is the short note referred to above, measuring 6.75" by 4.25", written on brown paper, the printed words in dark brown. ___CONDITION: Both volumes fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without any rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; Volume I with the rear corners gently bumped and Volume II with an extremely small spot on the spine, else fine. The dust jackets near fine overall, not price-clipped, clean, with only a few spots of light edgewear; the spines are lightly sunned and the jacket for Volume II has a small area which caught and wrinkled (no missing pieces, but the wrinkled area is obvious). The autograph note is near fine, clean, free of edgewear, with a single horizontal fold (presumably the original fold from mailing). ___POSTAGE:  Please note that this set is unusually heavy and extra postage will apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
America: Printed, unknown where, or by whom sold. London: Re-Printed for John Joseph Stockdale, 1808. 147, [1] pp. Disbound, Scattered light fox and soil, Good+. On the Treaty of 1806, negotiated by Pinkney and Madison but rejected by President Jefferson. Brown dedicates it "To Those Members of Congress Who Have the Sense to Perceive and the Spirit to Pursue the True Interests of their Country," the pamphlet attacks English invasions of American sovereignty. Referring to the British ship Leopard's assault on the Chesapeake, the author says that, "The attempt to search a public ship of war appears to us unjustifiable; and more especially so on our own coast." The author predicts, correctly, that the British would offer reparations and thus avoid war over the incident; and offers unflattering opinions on Jefferson-- "a schemer, perpetually occupied with some strange out-of-the-way project"-- and Madison, "a man of feeble mind." The appendix, beginning on page 93, prints Jay's Treaty of 1794; Letter from T. Jefferson, Sept. 5, 1793; His Majesty's Explanatory Notes of the new Treaty; and Mr. Merry's Letter. Sabin 8127.
