Description
VIII, 90 pp. text concerning the ruins, monuments, reliefs and sculptures of ancient Rome, including 128 engravings, several depicting architectural plans, on 73 numbered plates executed by Dominico Montagu after drawings by Barbault, a former student and later rival of Piranesi. Some extremely minor scattered soiling or toning. Large folio. Full-leather, marbled, hand-tooled and gilt binding; spine with six raised bands. Some old worm damage along spine, minor rubbing and abrasions, especially to extremities, some slight leather loss to corners. Rome (Bouchard & Gravier) 1761. Rossetti 750; Borroni 8193; Cicognara 3592; Olschki 16398. An excellent copy of this scarce and important work on ancient world art and architecture, depicting the highlights of ancient Roman architecture.
