Description
London: Michael Sparke Senior, 1643. FIRST EDITION. Complete and continuous despite pagination errors. General title (misbound between A2 and A3) and separate titles to each of the four parts. Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, rebacked and re-cornered, spine label; book label appears to have been removed from paste-down. First edition. Prynne, a Puritan, wrote extensively against the introduction of “papist” policies into the government during the English Civil Wars. In Soveraigne power, he argues that only the Parliament has supreme control over the law of the land, and he intends to “eternally silence ignorant, the most malicious Tongues and Pennes of all Royalists, &c. Anti-Parliamentary Malignants.” Not difficult to see which side of the aisle Prynne occupied. Prynne (1600–1669) was a prolific pamphleteer and attorney who wrote on numerous subjects from theater to theology and published about 200 books and pamphlets during his lifetime.

Description
London: Printed for J. Payne and J. Bouquet, 1752. First Edition. 8vo, pp vi + 84, 95, with 3 folding maps. Bound in full mottled calf with gilt rules. Small bookplate ("Lavington") on front pastwdown and one "From the Wilberforce Library Backsettown" on front free endpaper. Frontis map slightly misfolded, but overall a near fine copy. Robson was a former employee of the Hudson's Bay Company who had worked as a surveyor and "Supervisor of the Buildings" (i.e., construction superintendent). His experiences convinced him that the Company was mismanaging its holdings so badly that all of northern North America would soon be taken over by the French. Hill (1477) describes this account as one of the earliest and certainly the fullest of works that had hitherto been published on the Hudson Bay Territory," and explains that "Robson, with a sound knowledge of the locale and of the personnel of the Hudson's Bay Company, condemned the company for its failure to promote enterprise and development in its lands." The first 84 pages are the narrative, the remaining portion of the book is an appendix giving an account of the discovery of Hudson's Bay and English activities there. The maps are: "A Draught of Nelson & Hayes's Rivers" (Plate I), "A Draught of Churchill River," (Plate II), and "Plans of York and Prince of Wales's Fort," (Plate III, which also includes an illustration of two snowshoe designs). Field 1312; Graff 3532; Sabin 72259; Smith 8728; Streeter VI, 3648, TPL 217, Lande 1418.

London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1910. Fine. Finely bound ca. 1910 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on verso of front endpaper). Full scored red calf, covers with double-gilt ruled borders surrounding a blind-stamped geometric design. Front cover lettered in gilt, spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, olive green morocco lettering label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.Small quarto (6 15/16 x 4 3/4 inches; 176 x 121 mm.). Collating viii, 72: complete, including six fine color plates and several line drawings in the text. A fine copy. Aucassin & Nicolette is an Old French story written in a mixture of prose and poetry. The name of the author is unknown, but he probably lived in Picardy during the early 13th century. It recounts the tale of Aucassin, son of Count Garin of Beaucaire, who so loved Nicolette, a Saracen maiden, who had been sold to the Viscount of Beaucaire, baptized and adopted by him, that he had forsaken knighthood and chivalry and even refused to defend his father's territories from enemies. Accordingly, his father ordered the Viscount to send Nicolette away, but instead the Viscount locked her in a tower of his palace. Aucassin is imprisoned by his father to prevent him from going after his beloved Nicolette. But Nicolette escapes, hears Aucassin lamenting in his cell, and comforts him with sweet words. She flees to the forest outside the gates, and there, in order to test Aucassin's fidelity, builds a rustic home to await his arrival. Fine.
