Description
London: John Murray, 1864. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS; PRECEDING THE APPEARANCE IN "PASSAGES FROM THE LIFE OF A PHILOSOPHER". "Lady Lovelace wrote that Babbage hated music. He tolerated its more exquisite forms, but abhorred it as practiced on the street. 'Those whose minds are entirely unoccupied,' he wrote with some seriousness in Observations of Street Nuisances in 1864, 'receive [street music] with satisfaction, as filling up the vacuum of time.' He calculated that 25% of his working power had been destroyed by street nuisances, many of them intentional. Letters to the Times and the eventual enforcement of 'Babbage's Act,' which would squelch street nuisances, made him the target of ridicule. "The public tormented him with an unending parade of fiddlers, Punch-and-Judys, stilt-walkers, fanatic psalmists, and tub-thumpers. Some neighbors hired musicians to play outside his windows. Others willfully annoyed him with worn-out or damaged wind instruments. Placards were hung in local shops, abusing him. During on 80-day period Babbage counted 165 nuisances. One brass band played for five hours, with only a brief intermission. Another blew a penny tin whistle out his window toward Babbage's garden for a half hour daily, for 'many months.' "When Babbage went out, children followed and cursed him. Adults followed, too, but at a distance. Over a hundred people once skulked behind him before he could find a constable to disperse them. Dead carts and other 'offensive materials' were thrown at his house. Windows were broken. A man told him, 'You deserve to have your house burnt up, and yourself in it, and I will do it for you, you old villain.' Even when he was on his deathbed, the organ-grinders ground away implacably." (John A.N. Lee, et al., International Biographical Dictionary of Computer Pioneers). To this day, Babbage's preoccupation with "street nuisances" is often cited as a subject for ridicule, but A Chapter on Street Nuisances is a sincere plea from a suffering man that yields valuable insight into the mind of the great scientist. Interestingly, his "autopsy report, which came to light in 1983, raises the intriguing possibility that Babbage's acute sensitivity to noise was due to a medical condition involving cochlear degeneration caused by arterial disease" (Dictionary of National Biography). Although labeled as an "Extract" from Passages in the Life of a Philosopher, this volume precedes the publication in book form. There is even an ad on the verso of the front cover for Passages, noting optimistically that it "in a few days will be published" by John Murray (the publisher of the "Extract"). The book would, however, be delayed; Murray objected to a perceived off-color passage, and refused to publish it, ultimately yielding the publication rights to the eventual publisher Longman. The first edition is extremely rare: While the book publication was still awaiting the book publication, Murray published a second edition, and Longman published a third edition. The only other copies we have been able to locate that have been on the market have been the later editions. With a detailed "List of Mr. Babbage's Printed Papers" included at rear. London: John Murray, 1864. Octavo, original sewn printed wrappers; custom silk box. 32 pages. Title with light toning and small damp stain on outer edge; stitching loose. RARE.

Description
1917. Full Morocco. Very Good. Oblong, 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content, with log entries, more or less statistical, on all the versos, and pictures and/or original drawings, mostly mounted, on 58 rectos, with some additional loose material. (129 numbered leaves in all.) Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log, as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album, with some emphasis on sports, including also fishing, foxhunting and sailing, but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa, with photos of native tribesmen, ostriches, a hut, Cecil Rhodes house, etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored, pencil, pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes, these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates, their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many, but by no means, all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting, and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill (Jennie Churchill), Arthur Balfour, Lady Minto (Mary, the famous 4th Countess), Henry Lascelles, the 5th Earl of Harewood, the 5th Earl of Carnavon (of King Tut fame, as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey), Baron Rothschild, Lord de Grey, Lord Ashburton, Prince Murat, the Duke of Buccleuch, Prince Duleep de Singh, Lord Rosebery, and on and on. Country homes include Longleat, Greystoke Castle, the Hirsel, Highcliffe Castle, etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected, and surely very popular, among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network, it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges, some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness, the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book, as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more, and this quality is part of its charm as well.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 1983. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. One of 400 copies printed under the direction of Andrew Hoyem, the press proprietor. It was the eleventh publication of the press. This copy is inscribed on the colophon: "To Joe Costello/29 VIII 83/Andrew Hoyem." This is a magnificent book from the Arion Press that more than does justice to this Hammett's novel. The preface describes this book as the apex of his work. The publishers write in a preface that "this edition is a tribute to Hammett's achievement. The design of the book reflect the spirit of the period in which it was written while giving its format an enduring presence. The forty-six illustrations are photographs of San Francisco Bay Area locations named or established by Hammett in the narrative. Most pictures were shot around the time of the actual setting of the story, five days during 1928." There are notes at the end of the book identifying each photo and its reference in the text." A few of the photographs are more recent and were provided by California photographer Edmund Shea. Bound by the Schuberth Bookbindery in gray cloth with a quarter leather black spine with silver titling. On the front and back covers are a striking and stylized image of a falcon done in black leather with silver trim and a red eye. Printed on Byron-Weston Linen Record paper using Bodoni semi-bold and Corvinus medium types. The photo-lithography was by Phelps-Schaefer. Housed in a gray cloth covered slipcase with a black leather spine label with silver titling. In fine condition. Measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches. 291 pages plus photographs. PRI/103124.

Description
This Irish-born British literary critic, essayist and satirist is remembered for his controversial 1831 edition of Boswell's "Life of Johnson"; as Member of Parliament and long-time secretary to the admiralty (1810-30) he is best known for slashing the size of the Royal Navy. ALS, 4pp (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", Aldeburgh, Great Britain, 1831 October 2. Addressed to George Lamb (1784-1834, British politician and writer; appointed under-secretary of state in 1830). Very good. Mild wear; being a four-page lettersheet, there's remnants of old archival tape along the fold. Croker comments on Lamb for answering his letter to British secretary of state The Viscount Melbourne -- George Lamb's own brother, William Lamb. Regards some cryptic naval incident -- in part: "I think it proper to observe that you do not appear to have seen the difficulty which I intended to submit to Lord Melbourne. My doubt did not apply so much to the treatment of the seamen who might be stranded, as to that of the town into which such persons may have been thrown" and he goes on at length to explain that the whole town may have been subjected to the stranded seamen. Good content from the tail end of Croker's admiralty career and the beginning of his literary career.
