Description
Edinburgh and London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1952. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST PRINTINGS: THE VERY RARE ORIGINAL OFFPRINT AND THE ORIGINAL ISSUES IN THE RARE WRAPPERS of Schrödinger's consideration of quantum jumps and the future of physics. "Throughout his life, Schrödinger sought to discredit Bohr's concept of quantum jumping. His forceful attacks culminated in the 1952 paper 'Are There Quantum Jumps?' In this paper he also presented some objections against Born's collision treatment and probabilistic interpretation..." Schrödinger also "repeated his old arguments, enveloped in a good deal of rhetoric. Physical science is at present in danger, he argued, of being severed both from its glorious history and from its cultural milieu. Physicists must concern themselves, not only with ingenious theoretical constructs and their agreement with experimental data, but also with the suitability of their concepts to be absorbed into a general spiritual culture of mankind: 'Science is not a soliloquy. It gains value only within its cultural milieu, only by having contact with all those who are now, and who in future will be, engaged in promoting spiritual culture and knowledge.' "Not all concepts, according to Schrödinger, are destined to survive: 'A theoretical science... where the initiated continue musing to each other in terms that are, at best, understood by a small group of close fellow travelers, will necessarily be cut off from the rest of cultural mankind, in the long run it is bound to atrophy and ossify'. The 'abbreviated language' of quantum jumps, Schrödinger argued, is not a suitable candidate for long-term survival. There were other 'ingenious constructs of the human mind that gave an exceedingly accurate description of observed facts and have yet lost all interest except to historian,' for example, the epicycles of planetary motion. The modern analogue of epicycles, Schrödinger prophesied, are the quantum jumps" (Beller, Quantum Dialogue: The Making of a Revolution). IN: The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Vol III, No. 10 (pp. 109-123); Part II, Vol III, No. 11 (pp. 233-242). Edinburgh and London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd., August and November, 1952. Octavo, original wrappers. ISSUES: A few marginal (scientific) pencil notations (not in Schrödinger paper). Part I with a little chipping and small ink stain to spine end wrappers and patch of soiling to rear wrapper. Part II fine. An extremely well-preserved copy, rare in original wrappers. OFFPRINT: Fine condition. Handsomely boxed together.

Description
Washington, D.C.: Merchants' Printing Co., Printers, 1907. Very good. 6 7/8" x 4 3/8". Blue cloth, title gilt. Pp. ix, [2], 244 + two unnumbered pages of charts. Very good: covers a bit scuffed and stained; one page with penciled scrawl across three lines of text not affecting legibility; a few tiny creases and a bit of scattered stray ink. This is a book intended to assist with the study of the Bible, written by an African American minister and professor at Howard University, Sterling N. Brown. Sterling Nelson Brown was born to enslaved parents in East Tennessee in 1858. He graduated from Fisk College in 1885 and from the Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1888. Brown was a pastor in Washington, D.C. for 25 years, simultaneously serving as a Bible professor at Howard University. He resigned from the ministry in 1913 to work solely at Howard, teaching and directing the School of Religion's Department of Extension Work and Correspondence Study. He wrote an autobiography in 1924 and died in 1929. In this book's preface Brown lamented that in his "several years as teacher of the English Bible in the Theological Department of Howard University, I have not found in any one volume just what seemed to be needed by ordinary Bible students." He thus prepared this "compendium of the whole Bible in the briefest possible form . . . Many subjects are included, but not treated exhaustively. A general view of the whole, and not the details, is emphasized. The Bible itself is to be studied in connection with the text book." The work includes tips and methods for reading and studying the Bible, as well as answers to "important questions" that would no doubt occur to "the thoughtful and intelligent student becoming acquainted with the Bible for the first time." It provides general outlines to the holy book itself as well as the "seven periods" of biblical history including creation, the interval between the old and new testaments and the "Life of Christ." One section is dedicated to the various "institutions of the Bible" and there are historical and chronological charts, including one focused on the principal persons, events and places of the "Period of the Jewish Province." A brief but thorough overview of the Bible, authored by an African American dedicated to its study and teaching. OCLC shows 19 holdings over two entries.

Description
1899. London: William Heinemann, 1899. 2 pp undated ads. Original blind-stamped blue cloth. First Edition of this novel, written almost entirely in dialogue, of Nanda Brookenham's "awkward age" of transition away from her mother's marriage-marketing and toward taking charge of her own life. This appears to have been a colonial copy that was transferred back for domestic use (according to E&L, 475 copies were so transferred): the book is in the second binding state (with nine tulip buds rather than four irises on the front cover), is printed on smooth wove paper, and has a title page that is printed all in black and is dated in Arabic numbers -- all aspects denoting colonial copies. The half-title, which would have identified this as a copy meant for the colonies, was excised by the publisher when it was re-designated for domestic use; most such copies do not have the final ad leaf either, but this one does. On the front cover, "THE AWKWARD AGE" measures 2-7/8" across (shorter than on all three copies cited by Supino); on the spine, "AWKWARD AGE" (all in one line) is in a much narrower font than the other four lines of print. This is a near-fine copy, slightly darkened on the spine and with very minor rubbing at the extremities. See Supino 53.3.0 + 53.4.0 + 53.5.0 (all variations of colonial sheets redirected to the domestic market, none of them quite the same as this); Edel & Laurence A53a.

Description
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. About Fine. New York: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Dec 11, 1939. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white photo and four-page memo (one page typed and 3 pp. mimeograph copy). About fine. Presented is Margaret Mitchell's biography file with her headshot portrait, typed memo from Howard Dietz' MGM Advertising and Publicity department and a three-page typed biography. Dated 12-11-39, this is the release which went to all advertising departments to publicize the premiere of the epic film adaptation of her bestselling novel Gone With the Wind. The bio tells of her life as a writer, taking ten years from 1926-36 to write her Pulitzer Prize-winning book, which would be her only published novel. The photo and bio come in its original file folder and the cover letter has "Star File" written at top. Gone With the Wind would have its world premiere in Atlanta, GA, on Dec 15, 1939. Mitchell, producer David O. Selznick and much of the main cast would attend. The publicity and advertising campaign for the film were the biggest achieved for a film up to that time.

Paris: L'Harmattan, 2007. Very Good. Paris: L'Harmattan, 2007. New Revised Edition. Octavo; 556pp. French-language throughout. Printed white glossy wraps. Covers lightly shelfworn but with no chips or tears. Spine straight and unbroken. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Two typed, signed letters by Veto to Edwards scholar Wilson Kimnach laid in -- the first, dated December 22 1991 on Universite de Rennes I letterhead, is a warm and chatty Christmas greeting with some discussion of translation. The second, dated March 16 (1992 by the envelope's postmark) and on Center of Theological Inquiry letterhead, encloses a copy of another letter to University of Illinois Press editor Richard Martin about a possible translation of Veto's Edwards book, and asking Kimnach to send along a note to Martin on Veto's behalf. An English translation would finally appear in 2021 from Wipf and Stock Publishers, the year after Veto's death, with Kimnach providing the foreword.

From lower cover: Travel a few miles from the beaches and resorts of Southwest Florida and a darker, different side of the Sunshine State surfaces. In Arcadia, the spirits of tormented children rise from the grave to play tag near their headstones. A murdered fisherman walks on water near Marco Island, screaming with the voice of a hog. Walking through downtown Fort Myers may mean walking into the ghost of man in a top hat who hops from building to building. And it all might be caused by a curse on an old Spanish tyrant. Join author Christopher Balzano as he explores some of the creepiest ghostly legends and chilling hauntings of the Gulf Coast.
